That would normally trigger two other links: (1) my own recollections of meeting a mercury-poisoned professor and (2), my pedantic discourse on the -ous, vs. -ic suffices in chemistry (mercuric vs. mercurous). I just don't feel that horn-tooty right now.

There's an interesting connection between "merkin" and mercury (the element). I doubt whether it's etymological.
