"Judges plan to outlaw climate change 'denial’"

"A semi-secret, international conference of top judges proposed to make illegal any opinion that contradicted climate change."
We might think that a semi-secret, international conference of top judges, held in the highest courtroom in Britain, to propose that it should be made illegal for anyone to question the scientific evidence for man-made global warming, was odd enough to be worthy of front-page coverage...
The organiser and chairman of the conference was the Supreme Court judge Lord Carnwath, a fervent believer in man-made climate change, who has worked with the Prince of Wales for more than 20 years, and with UNEP since 2002.
The purpose of this strange get-together was outlined in a keynote speech (visible on YouTube) by Philippe Sands, a QC from Cherie Blair’s Matrix Chambers and professor of law at University College, London. Since it is now unlikely that the world will agree in Paris to a legally binding treaty to limit the rise in global temperatures to no more than 2 degrees C from pre-industrial levels, his theme was that it is now time for the courts to step in, to enforce this as worldwide law.

Lol. Which part of it? The part that allowed witnesses to be brought forth from King Arthur's Court? The one that made sonnets into scientific theories?

The one that allowed anyone bearing J.R.R. Tolkien's One Ring to summon the court to Lord Sauron's command? Replacing bailiffs with orcs? Hahahaha.

Why don't they need to outlaw those who don't believe in gravity or Darwin or quantum mechanics? Why is this the only scientific doctrine that needs to be enforced by law?............Sub atomic physics is not my area of greatest expertise, but I believe that Einstein was wrong when he commented that God doesn't play dice with the universe. The universe is an elaborate, intricately designed machine for throwing dice. So if Einstein can be wrong, maybe it would behoove us to admit that maybe we can be wrong.

Well, I was assuming that the restriction applied only to testimony in courts or to policy goals. But if this is indeed a broader speech restriction (as unfortunately, the English are sometimes wont to do) then I agree it would be a travesty and I would oppose it no less than I would oppose so many other English attempts to micromanage speech when it comes to "offense", adult material, policing "community relations" (i.e. critiquing the theology of jihad), etc. Those limey bastards really do think they can micromanage it all when it comes to speech and they really are subservient and polite enough to allow it. I'm not surprised that this was the culture in which George Orwell rose to prominence.

In light of your remonstration and my appreciation of it, I should walk back my quips regarding Chick's comments on English common law, as well. It's funny, because during one of my recent visits there, at a dinner of some fairly well educated young professionals, none of them seemed to understand what the phrase "common law" even meant. This was a shock to me. I've tried to read up on it since, but I get the indication that there has been quite an effort underway over several decades to centuries of reforming English law in a way that resembles the codification attempted by their continental counterparts, as took place under Napoleon. It didn't even used to have a supreme court until very recently, and this will also drastically change the many sources of tradition that were used for informing the English body of law (including, IIRC, opinions issued by the House of Lords).

You can tell when the religion is complete bullshit when the high priests behave outside their own contrived exceedingly flexible and self-serving catechisms.

Both parents were not particularly religious, not that you should care, but it was still interesting that without any actual training to speak of nor any real interest in studying they both still managed to extract the right essence from it. I recall Mum's answer when asked, the reason Jesus is worth paying attention to is he lived an admirably perfect life. You really cannot find falut with it. He really did practice what he preached and he preached the most outrageous and apparently suicidal incomprehensible counterintuitive things and actually died demonstrating his faith.

He was either genius or massive crackpot but whatever he was people who met him agreed IF God DID come to Earth then He would look like this.

He blew everybody away who came near Him.

Anything that follows MUST improve upon that and nothing has. All modern prophets are false. They utterly refuse to practice what they preach and they will NOT STOP PREACHING their bogus religions.

Their religion need much better prophets. Because politicians are flat not cutting it.

Except for ridiculous Democrats and other limp-minded liberals who swallow shit hook line and sinker as long as it makes them feel better than everyone else. Cheap sanctimony.

Yes, kids are awesome to play with. My brothers' are still under 5, as well.

My fiancé wants us to have them but I have no pleasant premonitions about the undertaking, esp. at my age. I prefer to let my brother's genes be the ones to live on. But she makes the case of wanting to have her own w/me, which would be mean of me, I suppose, to deny - despite every legitimate reason I think I have for avoiding that.

Reproduction's for those young and foolish enough to ignore the consequences of it. At my age, I would probably have kids that are born with gray hair already.

Reproduction is the very purpose and essence of life, a reality you cannot possibly know or appreciate until you've experienced the reality.

And, I say that as somebody who probably wouldn't have had children or grandchildren if it weren't for drinking.

The only thing I regret in life is that I don't have more children.

Bleach Drinkers Curing Coronavirus Together said...

Reproduction is the very purpose and essence of life, a reality you cannot possibly know or appreciate until you've experienced the reality.

Creating copies of yourself sounds all well and good, but each life should have its own purpose as well. You can't just write on a pice of carbon paper, "this is a piece of carbon paper." A life that doesn't have its own joys is a problem.

I have joy in my life. A lot of it.

What I have no faith in is the idea that this is a world worth bringing children into.

Seriously, how can you look at the way the world is, and think it's as good as or better than the world that children were brought into centuries ago?

Well, I guess if I were as comfortable with forgetful drinking, then that would solve the problem for me also. But I'm not.

Bleach Drinkers Curing Coronavirus Together said...

And besides, my own brother isn't into some really stupid shit. I won't get into it, but let's say he's forgoing something for them that he really should not take for granted. Stuff that he thinks is "natural" but that will mess them (or someone else's kid) up.

I'm sure that if I had kids I would do some stupid shit also.

That's the way of the world.

My brother's family are really super loving parents, but they let him get away with some ridiculous stuff. Half the time I think he just does it because he's way too tired to gently redirect or reprimand.

The world just don't make enough sense right now for kids. Kids want a world they can make sense of - and ours is FUBAR.

The stress that puts on parents means that they will all fall short. And not just in understandable, easily forgiven ways.

In horrible ways.

Like having them in the first place. ;-)

Seriously, I think a parent's first obligation - if they care more about the person they're creating than the JOY of knowing they can do so and seeing it happen - is to do it in a world that we can honestly say nourishes the flourishing of kids.

Can we honestly say that about this world? About this country? About this society?

I wish we could, but I don't see it.

Just look at the choice of dating partners. How screwed up American women have become in the ideas they've been taught.

Are these the women the world needs for good mothers?

Come on.

Shouting Thomas said...

It works the other way around.

You have children, and then you have an investment in the future, and the questions you ask no longer matter.

The reason you have children isn't because you work things out on a balance sheet. You have children because you get hot as hell over some great woman and you are overcome by lust.

Your religious/spiritual/animal nature takes over and obliterates your essential, and essentially dull, and lifeless intellect. (Not aimed at you by the way. A general statement.)

We are not just a Brain in a Jar. We are so much more than that.

The great fight between good and evil takes place in every generation and that is what makes life worthwhile. That fight is no better or worse than it ever was. We are always tested to the limits of our ability to endure.

Shouting Thomas said...

Just look at the choice of dating partners. How screwed up American women have become in the ideas they've been taught.

Just look at Myrna.

Read about her. One of my links was about her.

Really brilliant, passionate people are always few. That doesn't mean they don't exist.

Bleach Drinkers Curing Coronavirus Together said...

I guess it's one thing to chalk off the selfishness of procreating to the immediacy of lustful 20-somethings.

But there are other forms of selfish abandon that you're incorporating into a human being.

The selfishness of the woman, for instance. Think of all the things that she's not thinking about for her kid. Like when she begs for "child support" in the form of an untraceable expense account. Or goes on Jerry Springer.

See? It's easy to say a man's (and/or woman's) lust is gleeful enough to not accrue to the detriment of the kid. But then, you know that many women (esp. American) don't have the self-esteem to think they're worth anything unless they mate and secure the best resources for their new reason for being - no matter how horrible a person they are or what lengths they go to in order to make that happen.

You see the selfishness of women projected into what they will willingly, thoughtlessly extend into their kids. Do you think men are exempt from that, too?

Having kids is like having a job. You should have the right one(s), for the right reason(s). Anything less is dull, lifeless and unspiritual. Sure, you can accidentally make it a lark. But that's the exception for which we have too many following other rules.

Bleach Drinkers Curing Coronavirus Together said...

What some people will do for money, others will do for the sake of earning the title "mother".

Everyone knows this.

The fact that there are amazing women here or there doesn't change the fact that they are exceptions.

But men are not picky. Especially when they're lustful. You think they know how to pick out the ones who would be good people, good human beings, and therefore good mothers? They don't have a clue. That's why women can get away with so much in a society that rewards corruption and manipulation. And it's why there are so many horrible people in America.

Women are allowed to be picky about men. Men are not as picky about women.

And thus, the dishonesty is bred and baked into another cycle.

A nice, Philipino woman (or from wherever) is one thing.

But we are living in, and trying to better, America.

We have a society that doesn't care about itself. Of course we are going to have women who don't care for creating a stable environment for their kid. They don't have one themselves.

The whole society is against them. It's for the individual, and not for the neighborhood and family structure that women require for a good understanding and secure sense of support for their kid.

Better to berate the man, instead.

It's all about being a fighter.

And imparting that mindset to the kid.

This is the country we live in. If I grew up elsewhere, I wouldn't be seeing it that way.

Shouting Thomas said...

I have deliberately restricted my mating endeavors to Catholic Filipinas for decades.

There are some rules. Single or widowed and naturalized. (Divorce is still a major taboo in Filipino society.) Don't raise another man's child.

Such a woman plays by the old rules... so long as you do, too. She'll take care of her man, give you children and cook and take care of a home. Most of them also make a substantial living and have great job skills.

Having children is not selfish, nor is it drudgery. Raising my own children and being with my grandchildren has been, by far, the most joyous part of my life. All my life, I've preferred to play in the back yard with my kids and grandkids than to go to work and achieve, and I've done pretty well in those arenas, too. Kids are fascinating and they give you back ten fold the love you give to them.

Bleach Drinkers Curing Coronavirus Together said...

Well, you are describing an exception and then generalizing it into a universal.

Unfortunately, America isn't being populated by Filipinas.

Moreover, men aren't told that they are as valuable for their parenting as they are for their earning. So what they might very well find more joy in (I would) is stacked against them by their employer, their American-born wife, virtually the whole society. Those who find a good work-life balance are lucky.

I'm glad things worked out for you. I just don't see how they would for most people.

I'm not worried about myself. I can be resourceful and/or canny (or crafty - heh). But I am worried about the society.

I know that a kid will learn from the society. He or she will not think that his parents have all the answers to everything. Because they don't.

And the society is one built upon the lie that says that unless the individual is everything (preferably a billionaire!) then he doesn't deserve any compassion from people around him.

I can't see raising a kid in this environment. I'm not saying that I couldn't, or that it wouldn't be fun.

I am saying that for me, I would find it to be an immoral act.

It would be like having being a slave on a planet of slave-people so that I could have a slave child. I just couldn't do it.

You know, ST, I'd like to second (or third, lost count) the suggestions in those comments about telling that story. I think the first one puts it right. You're used to working with other musicians - so maybe a co-author or someone who can help tease the stories out of you in the right way would work. I think they're worth putting together and Dad Bones is right that you're too close to the situation to do it on your own. I can even tell that the distance of time is allowing you access to better and better tellings, but you probably don't want to take too much longer to get it out. It can't be the worst use of the time you have between taking care of grandkids and being on the road.

I say go do it. If it was indeed her wish, and if she was that insightful, then you should try to piece together what you got and find someone who will help actualize it. An arranger, of sorts. I don't know. I just know that his advice makes sense.

The conference speaks to desperation, not to threat. They're seeing their construct failing and it's causing extraordinary frustration.

Neurosis does that, Goddamnit, everyone MUST agree. Oh dear, after all that, it's slipping.

I find myself clicking off at the first mention of climate change and it doesn't matter how engaging the subject, boom, you're gone, now that the neurotic obsession has pervaded all media, all of it, as it does being populated with liberal dishrags for brains but nonetheless fierce self-named warriors for justice, as it is.

You cannot even pause on Animal planet for a moment of a pretty leopard anymore, not one moment, without also being envenomated by liberal dishrag for brains neurosis.

It's like a hidden snake with no rattle, no disturbance, just utterly non-sequitur zap, bite on the ankle. Again! Goddamnit, I allowed it again! How? By having Animal planet available.

"Due to climate change the spotted leopard's natural habitat is threatened."

Fuck you, leopard. Fuck you Animal Planet. Fuck you dishrag for brains liberal activist disguised as producer, disguised as writer, disguised as narrator, all ankle-biting snakes. I don't have to have your DNC talking point along with your pretty leopard. Fuck all you Democrat voting dishrag for brains cunts. Fuck all of you.

I'm quite tired of being envenomated. Meaning I'm quite tired of association with loyal Democrats, and I haven't yet met a Democrat who is not also loyal.

That's basically ALL association.

They honestly think themselves clever by slipping in the shiv conversationally as if listeners won't notice being stabbed.

And so as a result all association is limited. VERY limited. Why? Envenomation. That's why.

It ruins everything. The neurotic obsessions do. I TOLD them I want a divorce and there're STILL here fucking with me. How much must I close down to shut them out? Completely? That is the history of it.

My existence on Earth will consist of 30 second max exchanges with any other human as envenomation protection. Because even a simple pass through channels and single pause on Animal Planet however brief with the sound ON means climate change neuroses envenomation. In this case I actually CHOOSE to be deaf to shut out liberal progressive horseshit neurotic envenomation.

Consider the conference a witch coven of judges, princes, and lords. All that's missing is Dr Who and BBC staff neurotically obsessed writers.

As a child I wondered how a thing like pre wwII Germany can happen and now as adult I see it quite clearly every single day, every hour actually, by this precise deranged emotional fealty to corrupted political party.

Let's have the place's jackass jump up and spout some steaming girlish menstruation about Republican corruption too even as that party is being upturned while Democrats ossify more completely in their obsessive neurosis. How I have come to fully detest the people I once enjoyed. Hillary sees her worst enemies in Republicans and for very good reason. She doesn't hate them enough because they've failed to vex her enough. AND the feeling is returned with prejudice that is extreme. I am now extremely prejudice against ALL Democrats.

Even Martin O'Malley.

Listening carefully today he told the most compelling story. He really is outstanding. The type of guy you'd want to know. A genuine hero. A real standup dude. And the whole time I'm wondering why in the world is he associating himself with a criminal enterprise.

He was asked something about compromises and he answered in typical liberal fashion by addressing his chagrin about money in politics and having to compromise in order to fundraise. Again, the biggest abusers complaining the most. He lost me. Even he. I just DON'T what to hear anymore GD Democrat drills.

This Ritmo/ST war reminds me of what Fat Clemenza said about going to the mattresses. "It's all right, these things gotta happen every 5-10 years. It cleans out the bad blood."

I don't see it as a "war."

It seems like a relatively reasonable discussion of diametrically opposed viewpoints.

Well done gentlemen.

Hey. Personally I wouldn't have equated climate denial with Holocaust denial, but since you're willing to go there...

I didn't say anything about Holocaust denial, but since you brought it up, that is the same thing as well. A country that shutters it's populace from what it deems unsavory thoughts or ideas is tyrannical in nature. Be that as it may, for you to equate libel/defamation against climate change proponents in the face that those very proponents and their advocates that are willing to silence any disagreement with either fines, indictment, and imprisonment is also your abject support for tyranny, but that's the ideology you believe in anyway, so...

That's because Einstein, could never wrap his head around the laws of probability that allowed him to formulate his ToR. They are too daunting to fathom and yet, he can claim that God doesn't play dice with the universe when in fact that's exactly what he did do. He engineered it at it's fundamental levels and set it into motion. Either he intended and knows what all permutated outcomes at every level from quantum foam to the infinitely macro will be, he decided to leave it to pure chance, or some combination in between. Either way, we are here and we are locked to this world for now and we are engineering our own future to go beyond the bounds of evolutionary science. When you can circumvent your own evolution, you are that much closer to God. The entire point of science is to discover all of God's creation and each stepping stone to scientific facts and acceptance brings us that much closer to him and in the end, I think that's what he wants. But if we don't get there because we can't get some aspect of our shit straight in some way, then I'm sure he may have an "oh well" attitude about it.

Lol. April, you're cute when you start with the tu quoques and copy-cat the other team's quips and catchphrases. "Clown car?" Remind me again which party has more donation-seeking candidates than it can fit on one stage?

What? You mean Steyr, Soros, Simons, et al. have competition? Oh NOES!!!

We have a society that doesn't care about itself.

We can thank the Democrat Party adopting Marxist/Leftist ideological purity for that. They've done a fine job. Mission Accomplished.

This discussion went steeply downhill with "So it's ok for the courts to uphold judgments against personal libel and defamation, but not when parties libel and defame all the scientists whose input into crucial policy decisions is paramount."

Judicial legislation, SECRET judicial legislation, to outlaw criticism of man-made climate change is just like shutting down defamation causes of action against scientists. (Which it is, of course; just not the scientists that YOU like.)

There is just no way to reach someone so deeply entrenched in the progressive cult.

For the record, I changed my mind about how I initially interpreted the post (yes, England has way too many speech restrictions [actually one is way too many] and this is another one of them) and I also agree w/Trooper that me and ST weren't warring. We tussle for a few seconds but I don't dislike the guy and learn a good deal from his comments and especially blogposts. He's a decent guy with some good wisdom about what he's learned in the world and we're just both prone to flying off the handle occasionally (about different things). But I think that means that we actually get each other in a weird, temperamental way.

The elephant in the room, or perhaps it's the donkey, is the fact that communication with and from highly gifted and intelligent individuals, some of whom land somewhere on the autism spectrum disorder continuum, can definitely be a different sort of beast. Having known someone with that sort of gift/inclination, I can attest the fact that weekends (when the order of life changes and time opens up) seem to be a particularly favorite time for them to let loose with verbiage, invective, strong argumentation and socially off comments containing glints of truth. Not only does doing so provide a form of energy release, it also creates an odd bond of negative intimacy.

At one time, a while back, I used to read an informative blog called Dichotomies which is now defunct after the owner supposedly got their proverbial tit caught in a stalker's wringer after getting hit with a poisoned red arrow from a not-OK-Cupid's bow.

At that blog I found several recommendations for books I ended up buying and either enjoying or appreciating, with one of them written by John Elder Robinson, called Look Me in the Eye: My Life with Asperger's Syndrome. In it Robinson tells how he handled a bully in school who kept spit-balling him, by taking a pliers to class and surreptitiously reaching forward and pinching and twisting the spitballer's skin with it when the guy wasn't paying attention.

“I solved my bullying problem with one word: pliers,” Robinson joked.

Whenever I come on threads like these, spitballs and pliers come to mind, only I have difficulty discerning Trooper York style: Whose Doing the Spitting? Whose Doing the Pinching, and Whose Doing the Twisting. Whatever the case, trumpeting and kicks are exchanged, energy is released and a weird, head shaking form of negative intimacy is achieved.

Yes, may peace be upon us, along with understanding, patience, the wisdom to know what can and can't be changed, and the courage to use a pair of pliers when needed.

Wow. I really like your comment, MamaM. And I'm glad to know you got something out of that book and the place that recommended it.

As for indiscernible back-and-forths, I think this must all be a crazy East coast thing. I've been here over a decade now, Trooper might apparently be a native Brooklynite and ST worked in Manhattan before calling Woodstock a more permanent base of operations. I think this pathological zaniness is all described much better on that Seinfeld series, which I'm finally watching all the way through, episode-by-episode on Hulu. My particular pathology, and possibly ST's, might be best characterized by the character George, later revealed to be his brilliantly inept creator/inspiration: Larry David - but particularly in the episode arc (The Jerkstore) that best showcases the consequences of an overwhelming sense of competition in the face of never-ending instances of staircase wit, which is something that blog comments allow for ad infinitum.

This is how we, that is those of us living cheek to jowl amongst too many units of humanity to become familiar with beyond how damn aggravating they are to anyone's inner life, simply must entertain ourselves. Yes, it's sad but true. But anyway, thanks for your comment, and I'm glad I was able to provide recommendations you appreciated.

It's why I prefer the West coast, or any less heavily populated place. Taking care of the land and the fauna and that much open space has a civilizing effect, I believe - and one that those of us on the other coast can't even bring ourselves to understanding any more.
