Pope embraces Cuomo legacy.

New York Post September 25, 2015
Pope Francis’ warm and forgiving nature was on display again Thursday when he said he would pray for Gov. Cuomo’s late father, Mario, sources told The Post.
The pontiff told Cuomo that Mario — who himself led New York state from 1983 to 1994 — was a great man despite Mario’s support of abortion rights.
Francis also blessed the governor’s gal pal, Sandra Lee — a cancer survivor — when the couple met the pontiff outside St. Patrick’s Cathedral before a service.
“The pope gave Sandra a special blessing for her health and her recovery and Cuomo asked the pope to say a prayer for his father,” the source said.
“The pope told him . . . that his father was a great man and he would keep him in his prayers.”
Mario Cuomo, who died in January, argued in a 1984 speech at the University of Notre Dame that Catholic politicians could personally oppose abortion while fighting laws that would restrict it.
Lee said this week she was cancer-free after undergoing a double mastectomy.

This guy really has a problem with what side he's on, doesn't he?

Can't see John Paul kissing the Lefties like this.

Sorry but he is in New York today and he is dominating everything.

This article from Ethika Politika is a very good analysis of the Pope Question, which I expect to see quoted by Trooper for his own purposes shortly.

What I get from it is something that I've known since I was a child: The Catholic Church has not much to do with the Locke-inspired, materialist, 18th century Enlightenment-derived American Government. And those American anti-Catholic cavils of the 19th century have at least a small hint of truth to them. Whiggery, from which our supposedly free-market economy and atomistic notions of liberty descend, was the old enemy of Catholicism. Chesterton understood this. But of course he lived it in an English context. I don't know what he might say about modern America, except perhaps to note we are now inspired to make a reductio ad absurdum of every political, economic, and theological premise, bashing each other into oblivion by them. Inspired by whom, I don't know. But my guess is Satan.

I've been very busy today. Sorry for the low posting.

BTW. Boehner? Good riddance.

Quoting what people actually say is unfair.

You hear that a lot from people who worship this Pope.

Remember when Mario Cuomo went thumbs down on Long Island Lighting's nuclear plant at Shoreham? Of course you don't. But I do because that Roman Emperor almost sunk this holder of LILCO stock who got out just before the stock imploded. No warning. No discussion. A sudden Executive Order and all those who didn't move with the speed of light were sunk. I spit on his grave.

A quote from the blog post by Ethika Politika:

"If the desperation of the conservative commentariat is any indication, they are deeply afraid that Francis may unsettle the seating plan at the dining hall. At the moment, the mainstream conservative commentariat is trying feverishly to drive a wedge between “conservative” Catholics and their pope, explaining why Catholics don’t need to heed the Pope’s economic and environmental statements, and should only pay attention to his pronouncements on abortion, same-sex marriage, and religious liberty. "

I would think this fundamentally false.

The Pope doesn't have much to say about abortion or same sex marriage. Actually that is wrong. I apologize. I guess I only want to listen to the Pope when he whispers about abortion, same-sex marriage and religious liberty. Not when he shouts about climate change and income redistribution.

Patrick J. Deneen on Ethika Politika:
"The pope has not departed from longstanding Catholic teaching on the immorality of an economic system grounded in greed and self-interest, a position established in 1891 with Pope Leo XIII’s first social encyclical"

Really?
I don't recall any other Pope siding with the socialist/communist ordering of the world demanded by climate change believers.
I don't recall any other Pope promoting liberation theology (or at least liberation theologists).

Communism is an unmitigated evil, resulting in the State killing of 200 million people in the 20th century.
I cannot abide the Catholic church having a soft spot for such a repellant and murderous idea.

"... the immorality of an economic system grounded in greed and self-interest..."

That perfectly describes Venezuelan socialism, which drove the country into penury.

As Friedman described, it's always the other guy that's greedy and selfish, whereas my motives are pure.

There is no politician in the United States who is more of a dedicated abortion warrior than Andrew Cuomo.

"And when confronted with the Syrian migration crisis now roiling Europe, the pope weighed in on that, too, this time commingling economics with ecology:

We see these refugees, these poor people who are escaping from war, escaping from hunger, but that’s the tip of the iceberg. But underlying that is the cause, and the cause is a socio-economic system that is bad, unjust, because within an economic system, within everything, within the world, speaking of the ecological problem, within the socio-economic society, in politics, the person always has to be the center.

Yes: For Francis, Syria’s great problem isn’t a blood-thirsty autocracy which gasses its own citizens—it’s a “socio-economic system.” He then goes on to blame the great migration to Europe not merely on an unjust economic system, but on deforestation. The migrants are, he said, “the people who come from the country because they have been deforested.”

Such remarks make you wonder if the Holy Father has ever seen an aerial view of Syria—where the first thing he would notice is that the country has almost no trees. This is not a recent development.
"

and

"The pope, by contrast, places his more elegant and sophisticated trust in the goodness of those wielding government power, “states,” as he writes optimistically, “charged with vigilance for the common good.”

It is disconcerting for a Catholic to read sentences from the pen of a pope that are demonstrably untrue. Leaving aside the doctrine of papal infallibility, which doesn’t apply to documents like Evangelii Gaudium, deference to authority is supposed to be bred into Catholics. And deference to an authority who is empirically wrong presents a special dilemma.

“Never,” the pope announced in a homily earlier this year, “has the use of violence brought peace in its wake.” Never? Survivors of Bergen-Belsen will have a different view. Likewise, if the pope wants facts about the effects of economic growth on poverty and justice, he could consult with the World Bank or the International Monetary Fund. By their estimates, global poverty is half what it was 20 years ago, thanks to—surely, at least in part—the economic growth generated by free exchange in the marketplace.

Pope and more pope! I'm not complaining about Pope posts or not enough posts. Often there's too many posts up. :)

The Pope is clueless about economics and free market capitalism.
In front of leftwing crowds, he condemns "unregulated capitalism". What?

Millions of people want to move TO the US from countries that a run by failed leftist dictators and crony communist corruption - the bastardization of capitalism. Places where free markets are non-existent. Places where the poor are kept poor by a corrupt regulatory state. Does the Pope not see this? If America is so horrible with our "capitalism" - why would anyone want to come here?

Trooper York said...

Why for the abortions and the same sex marriages of course!

We have to put up what interest us April.

If I did what I really want I would only post about starlets of the 1960's and sandwiches.

But I cede the food posts to Chip and I edit myself so I don't post two many remembrances of my favorite starlets because that pisses MamaM off.

The thing it is wall to wall Pope here in NYC today. The radio and TV is all Pope all the time. Sorry if there are two many Pope Posts.

Pope-a-dope.

Sorry - I have no doubt he is truly a compassionate man filled with humility and that is to be commended. Pope is CLUELESS on economics and what it is that brings prosperity and hope to the individual & the masses. Answer: It is not the collective regulatory state.

Argentina is a mess. Most leftwing nations are a total basket-case, with rising poverty and scarcity of resources - even with so-called oil revenues.
The people are poor and stay poor. There is no hope. They struggle against corrupt wealthy entrenched Castro-esqe dictators for life who are themselves clueless and greedy with their massive regulatory state. Does this Pope care to understand why anyone would want to move "north"? hmmm - it's a mystery.

There have been a lot of Popes, hundreds of them. I don't think he will go down in history as the worst. Besides, history has a lot of bank shots. The people of Cuba probably heard a different sermon than Castro or Trooper York did.

One more shot at an analysis of Francis. This is aimed, not at people whose heads are made up, but at the odd person who might stumble in here and be led astray.

For myself, I am stumbling out, never to return. At my age, I have a lot of personal spiritual and moral work to do, with God's grace and the help of others. it is not good for me to waste any more limited energy or time around such soul-sucking negativity as you see on display.

This is one reason I never went through with my past desire to convert to Catholicism. The Holy Trinity and the bible are hard to enough to believe in, to then throw in Papal infallibility on matters of faith, and various Bishops constantly blathering about political matters was just too much for me handle.

BTW, I always find it humorous that people who aren't Catholic or even Christian always want their opinion of the Pope to be known. I mean, why would anyone care what Chuck Schumer thinks about the Pope?

Hey. He is the King of the Catholics after all. And there are a lot of them.

I mean, why would anyone care what Chuck Schumer thinks about the Pope?

Um, because they're both politicians. And politicians are allowed (and supposed) to have opinions about each other. It affects how well they can work together.

Like I guess we all forgot that the pope is essentially a modified office of the old Roman emperor, that his dominion was one of the most important in Europe, that he commanded armies and still heads up a state of his very own. He's like the prince of Monaco except with a flashier, much more extensive art and architecture collection and historical legacy and, AND his very own religion!

What's not for a politician to admire?

I'll help you both out. It will involve a lot of reckless abandon, hedonism, fun, silliness, wonder and enjoyment of entirely guiltless pleasures. But you'll come out a better person as a result. More honest, more interesting, more sociable and much less guilt-ridden. I guarantee it. You'll be amazed at how much of your spirit it opens up to the things that matter. The things that make you feel alive.
