Legislation: Single-Person Bathrooms Gender Neutral In NYC

We must look to help trans-gender individuals who quite frankly, have fears,”
Aiming to curb gender bias and harassment in New York City, officials are readying a plan that would require businesses to convert one-person restrooms into gender-neutral facilities.

“This is a very important issue,” said New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer, whose office is releasing a report Friday recommending the changes. “It’s time to help individuals who identify as transgender to use the bathroom without fear of consequence.”

“We’re not talking about constructing new bathrooms or spending any money, except basically purchasing a sign,” Stringer said. “Just putting a sign on an existing bathroom will go a long way to reducing discrimination.”...

“Being transgender, it’s not about the bathrooms. It’s that other people try to make it that way,” said Renfroe, a transgender man. “This step is simply just a way to make things more equal for everybody, to stop transgender people on a basis that doesn’t really exist.”

“I’ve been aware that it would not be safe for me to access the facilities appropriate for my gender,” he said. “So having a space where a basic necessity of the body, where we can actually go and do that without fear of being assaulted, is pretty important.”

I don't feel safe in any public bathroom. Male or Female.
*can we get some air freshener in here*

Isn't this a non-issue? I see gender-optional bathrooms all over the place.

But one person restrooms are already gender neutral. Oh wait, they must mean removing or including urinals or containers for feminine hygiene products in all restrooms.

BTW, not kidding... as I wrote this post, I was called and asked to participate in the poll. The first question was about being of voting age. The second question was, pick one:
1) Will you definitely vote in a Republican Primary?
2) Will you probably vote in a Republican Primary?
3) Will you vote in a Democrat Primary?

That's it. I answered, none of the above; and she said, that's not one of the answers. I said I recognize it wasn't an answer, but first, the answers seem a bit odd as there are two Republican choices and one Democrat. Her response was "do you want me to read more Democrat answers?" I said, "What's wrong with not wanting to vote in any of the primaries?" Her: "So you are unsure?" I gave up, and told her apparently I did not fit within her poll.

I am still confused. Are transgender (or WTH the name is now) people ones with a physical set of sex organs but they dress the other sex (Like women with testicles? Men with breasts and a vagina?)

Go in the organ appropriate bathroom if dressed like that logo. If dressed other (like ones feelings) go in that bathroom and then go into a stall, close and lock the door and do whatever.

I want to know when someone is going to say "HEY! You, guy with the penis. I am a woman in the process of getting my breasts tucked into my bra, my panties sorted out under my clothes and I don't need to worry about a *guy* in the ladies room playing Tom."

When do the rights of the biological women (the majority) matter?

And if it's a matter of turning singles into gender neutral bathrooms, and changing a sign, so what? (But you're going to have to add a urinal because some guys are lousy, careless shots, no matter what their gender.)

Family bathrooms are the best. Usually clean and single person so you can lock the door and take a shower.

Are transgender people being assaulted?
By who?

Maybe we can have the regulations regarding toilets over turned as unconstitutional, so that they can then be made to flush sanitary napkins. It will take a bit more water, but we got plenty of that in the southern states, so we have no grounds for argument against such a policy.

There's been a unisex bathroom at a rest stop on I-86 (going west in New York State) for years. I know as I have often used it. Two advantages: privacy; because of the privacy the ability to douche after using the facilities. Is that too much information? But everything about me is fascinating!

I don't get it. If it is a single person bathroom, then one person at a time goes in. First a man. Then a woman. Then a transgender person. Then a kid. and so on. As long as each person is neat, clean, doesn't pee all over the floor or seat, doesn't leave poo all over the place....who cares?

What is the issue?

Like April, I see one person no gender indicated bathrooms all the time.

I hope Gothamites like their tax money going for all this.

This is an issue to which I have not devoted a great deal of thought........Shoelaces have really gotten better since I was young, When I was young, shoelaces would periodically break. I can't recall the last time I had a broken shoelace.

"What is the issue?"

Article doesn't make it clear but it must be for situations in which there are two single stall bathrooms - one female, one male. Ritmo will soon be free to use whichever one he chooses when he visits the city.

A lot of women are fastidious about sitting on the toilet. They perch above it and, as a result, leak all over the place. This causes unsanitary conditons. I hope this ruling will not damage the pristine condition of so many men's bathrooms.......I wonder if transgendered men pee standing up or sitting down. With some female clothes, it's probably easier to pee sitting down. However, as a matter of efficiency and hygiene, it would seem more practical to pee standing up........I'm just now giving serious thought to this issue. Can anyone enlighten me on the favored peeing position of transgendered men?

Maybe mirrors will be banned? I don't know.

They are going to pass it, and then will know what they mean.

I predict the number of people with gender identity confusion will skyrocket. Progress!

Transgender...

I'm beginning to understand what Scalia means by "words have no meaning".

If I were a transgendered man wearing a skirt and pantyhose, I would be embarrassed to use the urinal. However, if I used a stall while wearing the same outfit, I would pee standing up. No one in their right mind wants to sit down on a toilet in a public bathroom......When I count the perks of male privilege, right at the top of the list I put the decreased waiting time in public bathrooms and the fact that you don't have to sit down to do your businesson most occasions. These are powerful advantages. I would urge all transgendered men to ponder them before cutting off their penis.

And now we identified the issue.

I'd swear I already posted this, but maybe the vortex of doom got it. Even 40 years ago, in the Asian countries I was in or lived in had more unisex toilets than separated...usually marked in the native language and English (of French) as "WC" or "Water Closet"....some with multiple "toilets." Everyone to use the same hole in a tile floor and the guys were expected to aim well :-) In short, if we switched to all "WC's" I'd not notice it as special....rather ordinary and a catching up with some 3rd world countries.

Whoops...forget the rationale...to me crapping or peeing or other sanitary functions is not something that would be prurient, I mean, come on, it is merely a biological function and not the least bit titillating. Maybe its just me?
