"Michigan Grandfather With Cancer..."

"Takes Up Uber Driving to Pay Off Home for Family"

ABC Breaking US News | US News Videos

"Once I pass away, chances are my daughter, who’s a part-time waitress at a small restaurant in Livonia, will lose the house we live in because she won't be able to afford it anymore," Broskey said. "So I'm doing everything for her and my grandkids at this point. When you find out you're dying, you realize your family and friends are so important."

I hope the internet helps him out with enough money to allow him to die without worrying about the future of his family. These internet appeals and funds are one of the better results of our new connectedness. It's democratic, voluntary, instant justice for people provided by the rest of us. Of course there is possibility of fraud, but that's even more transparent in this system than conventional charities that could never address things like this as often or as quickly. I hope this phenomenon doesn't peter out. It's pretty cool for people to be able to directly help others instantly without a middleman. A lot of small affordable donations can save lives and fix injustices.

My 82 year old mother was diagnosed with stage four cancer about a year ago and given less than a year to live. I brought her out from Florida to live with me through that. Despite scans and tests that indicate she is sicker than ever, you could never tell. She works, she drives around L.A. to card games, bingo, local Casinos, and club parties like it's nothing. She has lost 20 pounds and looks great. She dresses very sharp with full makeup and all that. Right now she is back in Florida visiting. She got her own flight, flew there alone, rented a car, and is driving herself around visiting her friends, who are mostly homebound. I'm so proud of her, and I just can't believe she is mortal. In my family, cancer is like getting a cold. Between the two of us, cancer has claimed a liver, 2 gall bladders, one rib, a kidney, 30 % of an intestine, part of a stomach, ovaries, and a uterus. It's all just a flesh wound. Fuck cancer!

Good idea Bago- how can we start a Fund Me thing for this guy?

The story says that someone already did. He already has over $100K. That's another thing about these funds and the internet: it's so ubiquitous that there is always someone who knows about the problem and jumps in and sets up an account. I love it.

He's got the money he needs now, so he should just go hang gliding... solo.

Wouldn't it be something if the cancer goes into emission, somehow, as a result of the kindness of strangers?

I meant to say remission.

From the link (Bagoh's @12:15)

We have reached our goal (including the fee for Go Fund Me), and thank everyone for the generous outpouring of support. As a result, we will be able to save Ken's house for his daughter and grandchildren. Because we have achieved our goal, and there is such great need in all of our communities, we are declining further donations to allow other causes to be supported. We sincerely thank and appreciate everyone for their contributions. We ask that you keep Ken in your prayers, and we will keep you up-to-date!

*tears* That's really cool.

So until you get cancer family and friends don't mean squat?

Re: bagoh's comment: I am in awe of 80 somethings or even 70 somethings who live pedal to the metal. It's a way, maybe the only way of saying eff you to death.

This is what America should look like. Take that extra step to help a stranger. I'm impressed with the guy who reached out and started the campaign.

(Instead, we expect corrupt politicians to help us., and they never do.) (but they and their cronies sure to get rich)

Isn't that great to hear = they get to keep their house AND he has now refused any addtional donations! What a mensch he is!

These stories only show and highlight the compassion of the american people to help a fellow american or someone in need. Do you see the government stepping in? Nope and good riddance. This is how charity is supposed to work, not from government but from each other. If Christ saw this he would approve. What am I saying, he approves already.

He really should go hang-gliding.

At least take lessons. And in those first few lessons he'll have his feet off the ground and glide like a bird. A bird!

That's better than an airplane any day. It truly is a dream come true. A thing from your dream life made real in your material life. It's awesome. If you glide even only a few yards down a gently sloping hill, if you get your weight completely off, pedaling with a dissolved bicycle so you stop and your weight is suspended, even for just a few seconds, then when you land you can just piss yourself because you DID it. A marching band appears on the spot and clangs its noisy cymbals and beats its drums and clamors in rejoicing in your mind.

You just have to sit down and go, "goddamnit, I did it." Let's have a picnic right here. He could give it up right there and the whole enterprise be a win.
