Ghastly.

That is serious talent. Master level work if it's legit.

ricpic, why do you think it's "ghastly"? Not arguing, I personally don't know what to think. It's honest, that's for sure. Pores and all, if you will. The subject is pretty. Not sure what point is being made with the designs painted on the subject then hyper-realistic painting of the subject. But it doesn't strike me as "ghastly."

My ghastly comment is mainly about the pallor of the colors. I mean why not take clinical photographs of his subjects? What's the point of painting that denies it's painting? There are great hyper-realist painters. Probably the greatest is Richard Estes. I don't know how he does it but if you google Estes you'll see that his work is realistic and painterly at the same time. It's much less "tight" than the work of Grassi. And Estes' colors sing.

Wow.

It's like the girl is an incense burner. She could be animated with smoke coming out of the holes and glow happening inside there.

Marie Vlastic, a Hari Krishna friend's wife is also a life-like warts-and-tattoos-and-scars-and-oddly shriveled uncut dicks-and all type artist and she too is mind-blowingly good.

Wanna see? Wanna see? Huh? Huh? Wanna see? OKAYFINE!

Her studio is two blocks away. I bin in there. But I DID NOT say, "kisses on your opening," even though it was her opening and the perfect opportunity to say something horrible like that.

I would like to commission Mr. Grassi to paint my portrait, and I will pay him double his usual and customary rate, but first he will have to promise to make me look like somebody else.

Ric, I think it's beautiful work. Stunning in it's execution. I certainly don't have that kind of talent. The hand work alone is phenomenal. I know I don't have that kind of dexterity or I do and have never cultivated it.

But it really doesn't look like a photograph. There's a bit of "uncanny valley" feel to it.
