Roger Goodell: “My job is to protect the integrity of the NFL”

"Depending on viewpoint, the NFL was either unable despite its vast resources to procure the same video from the Revel Hotel and Casino that TMZ somehow acquired and published. Or, as TMZ reported Tuesday morning, the league simply never asked for it in an effort to ferry out a lighter punishment for Rice."
Goodell, in the CBS interview, said league officials asked Atlantic City authorities for “anything pertinent” after seeing the initial security footage, which showed Rice pulling Palmer into the hallway during last February’s altercation.

“We are particularly reliant on law enforcement. That is the most reliable. That is the most credible,” Goodell said. “We don’t seek to get that information from sources that are not credible.”

Why would anybody regard it as the duty of the NFL to conduct investigations of alleged or actual domestic violence committed by players?

That's the job of law enforcement.

If I was Ray Rice's attorney, I would have advised him to say that he smacked Janay because she said she liked the name 'Redskins'.

Let Roger Goodell sort that out.

If a TMZ employee (or independent contractor, they're basically one and the same in California) was beating his wife at home, would that be on TMZ to investigate and punish?

AP is claiming they sent the tape to the commissioner's office, so if ol' Rog didn't view it then it sounds like a case of willful ignorance. Then overreaction.

Personally, I think this whole knock-out game has gone far enough!

If Obama said "If I had a daughter, she would look like Janay" he would be telling the truth for once.

As an old white man Roger Goodell should not view the romantic and marital interactions of African Americans through the prism of his own prejudice. You need to respect the norms and practices of their culture.

Racist.

sound no workie so I'll just say this: The NFL needs to crack down on the thuggery and the brain damaging purposeful hits. Out of the game is not enough ,.out for the year with no pay if it is an obvious bad hit.

Goodell's pimp hand is not strong, unlike Ray Rice's of course.

There are concentric rings of evil and stupidity here. The epicenter of evil and stupidity is, of course, Rice. Even OJ was more discreet in his abuse. Then there's Janay. She's certainly made a problematic decision in her choice of a spouse. But the PC police have now ruled that it is wrong to criticize her. It's even violative of her privacy to show that video. Then there's the Atlantic City police. They looked at the tape and decided it was no big deal. Then there's the Ravens. They were his employer. They should have shown a little more curiousity as to the nature of his crime. Well, Ray Lewis was allowed to drive away from two murdered corpses without anyone making too big a fuss so how were they to know. Finally there's Goodell. He's in the outermost ring. It doesn't seem that he's the most guilty nor even the dumbest actor in this play, but he's the one attracting the most flack. He's the establishment figure and extremely white. Plus he makes a lot of money. If anyone should suffer for this scandal, he should be the one.

Goodell is white. Had he come down hard on Rice immediately, he would have been called a racist.

That's how it works.
