Viral Video: Sassiest Flight Attendant

For those of you traveling with your children... why?

I have noticed that this is the norm on Southwest flights. They attempt to inject humor into the safety demonstration.

On balance it probably helps ease worries about flying and lighten the mood. I was on one flight and the gal's humor was edged with a bit of hostility. Must have been a long day. After we landed she said "Ok everyone - get out".

That was unprofessional, imo.

"marry one of us and you'll fly free."

That's true.

My aunt's brother's wife is a flight attendant and they fly free. The option is stand-by only. You show up and hope the seats don't sell out. Still, not a bad little perk.

OT: Eli Wallach Dead.

One of the greats.

As the WPIX once put it, "Why can't the bad guy be magnificent, too?".

I'm pretty sure I've flown on one of his flights, seriously, I almost positive I did.

Hilarious. Got a round of applause. A number of Southwest flight attendants do this, but this guy was a step beyond. One gets the sense Southwest employees like their jobs.

I remember the children joke.

It's like flying the Jungle Cruise, do it enough and the jokes probably get old, but every so often, it's great.

SOP on SW.
Funniest one I've ever seen was a flight out of Oakland to Reno. Passengers were mainly a bunch of old guys in bolo ties. Walking, talking stereotype gets up and does his spiel. Parts are funny. Smoking is available on the wing. Heh. Mainly what was funny was the contrast.

I'm going to watch it. I hope he was actually nice about the people traveling with children.

The thing about "why" is... the answer may well be "because my parent just died" or "because their grandmother is old and going to die soon and I want them to know her."

Does anyone think that *anyone* travels with kids for the fun of it?

I've never seen a flight attendant wearing shorts. Is that the standard uniform on SouthWest?

I'm terrified of flying. The jokes wouldn't help me at all. Might even make it worse.

All I want is for the attendants to be going about their business as if it's the most normal, and safe, thing in the world to be up there at 26,000 feet. That has a slightly calming effect on me.

Flying into Orlando from Baltimore once the flight attendant ended the post flight message with "Welcome to Bithlo." If you don't live in Orlando I'm not sure I can explain just how nasty a comment that was. Maybe flying into Cuba and hearing "Welcome to Gitmo"? Nah, Gitmo has better facilities than Bithlo.

Sassy is a cute word for a peppy, semi-playful form of moderated sarcasm that walks close to the edge of disrespect.

I wonder how well the routine would have gone over with a different voice and inflection?

To my ears, it depends on a stereotype to be funny.

That said, I continue to appreciate Southwest's ability to think outside the box, empower their people and provide for the customer.
