Ugh.

My "ugh" isn't about what Shaq did in this story. It's about the hypocrisy and lack of grace, as usual. Everybody shaming him must never have done something so awful. Right.

Anyway, good on him for apologizing . (Also, good on him for his auxiliary police effort in Miami.) (link is to Instapundit)

This is horrible. That said, Shaq is a good citizen. He does a lot for people just randomly w/o seeking publicity. Kind of like the King. I will be surprised if he doesn't do the right thing here. Thanks for the heads up, I'll watch to see if he responds.

The King is Elvis for you youngins.

There are a lot of not nice people out there.

Guess that kind of goes without saying.

There's an evolutionary explanation, probably.

Introspection is wonderful and this post invites it.

Thank you, darcy

Are you sure Shaq apologized? I missed that in the Instapundit item, the page he linked to, and in the NY Post article.

Does Shaq get prohibited from basketball games forever, or does that only happen to Jewish transgressors?

I am a little surprised that a big name like Shaq would use his image/brand in this way. Unlike Donald Sterling, this was no private comment recorded illegally, but an intentional broadcast.

But I agree with Darcy and think it is similar to Sterling's sin, and we are all sinners. I am not going to pile on, except to note the differences when old white dudes behave stupidly.

The online behavior monitors have turned us into a national Lord of the Flies response team.

I hope that the NBA adhere's to it's new standard. That every time a black dude dunks in a white guys face and makes a racial remark that he will then be deprived of his livelihood.

That is the new standard after all.

Trooper York said...

Shaq needs to be banned from the NBA and not allowed to attend games or comment on television. It is only right because of his repulsive and bigoted speech.

Trooper York said...

Shag is not allowed to harbor those thoughts or to express them out loud without losing his job.

Thought crimes must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

TrooperYork said...

Sorry. I called him Shag because he is a big dumb fuck.

My bad.

Amartel said...

When everyone's behaving badly it's kind of problematic to pick out a particular transgressor. Same problem with the Sterling case. They're all (Sterling and his gold digger and the NBA and the NAACP and the various jackals that came to feast on the carcass) hideous.

Yes Father, he did. I should have included it in my post and will edit it, but here it is.

Fr. Fox,

The NY Daily News says Shaq apologized in two Twitter messagea:

"Made a new friend today when I called and apologized to Jahmel Binion. Great dude".

and

"Had the opportunity to talk to Jahmel Binion yesterday and apologize about the post on IG!"

Lydia said...

Darcy -- Funny how we posted at almost the same moment.

Darcy said...

Ha! Yeah. Hi Lydia. :)

Personally, I'm flattered by the higher standard expected of whites, men, and conservatives. I just think it's stupid for everyone else to expect so little of themsleves.

Now, I can't actually meet the higher standard, but I am flattered, and enjoy that you think I'm better than you.

Trooper York said...

That's just your white privilege talking you fool.

Take that back!!!!

Okay, fine. It's been way too long, it's bugging me, and it looks like it's up to me to be the douchebag:

To some people, anger feels like popularity.

bagoh20 said...

Have you noticed that even when you are feeling good that getting your inner bitch on still is quite satisfying?

I always open a can of whoop ass for dessert, even when I'm not hungry.

Fr Martin Fox said...

OK, then he apologized, good. Back to Darcy's question.

What this country needs is for more people to go to confession regularly.

I'm not kidding.

The more people experience themselves as real sinners, in desperate need of forgiveness...

And then experience that forgiveness...

The more readily they will forgive.

Our Lord many times said, by the measure you measure, so it will be measured out to you. And he said, in the prayer everyone seems to know, "forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us." That AS is key, because it means...measure me, O God, by my measure of forgiveness.

What do you want? To get into heaven on mercy, or strict justice?

Fr Martin Fox said...

Because ain't nobody getting into heaven on strict justice.

Not even Mayor Bloomberg.

AllenS said...

We all sin. Only the better of man/woman confesses to their sins.

AllenS said...

I remember the first time that I had to confess to my sins. I was in there a long time. I was very young.

I wouldn't know where to start now.

Fr Martin Fox said...

Allen:

Well, you can't do it online, so don't make any unguarded comments here!

But seriously, don't sweat it. You go see the priest, tell him it's been awhile, and you "don't know where to start."

He'll smile and take it from there.

It's a breeze. Trust me, I'm a professional!

"Try Preparation H. Resentment is like wanting to kill someone but you end up drinking the poison yourself."

Eh. I'll decide when and how I enjoy the decline. I'm having a rage against the dying of the light day today. Stories like this just depress me. Shaq seems like a very decent person by today's standards. But how does a decent person decide to be such an ASS, in writing and in public, to someone who is clearly burdened with an obvious difficulty. It's cruel. What was the decisionmaking process there? Did he think the facial expression was a joke? I can see that as a reasonable excuse. And the ease with which social gaffes are made and then fixed with a "tweet." Too easy.

To quote Don Henley, "you keep carrying that anger it'll eat you up inside" Sometimes you have to shout a little. Just ask Thomas.

bagoh20 said...

"What do you want? To get into heaven on mercy, or strict justice?"

I was kind of counting on white privilege.

Fr Martin Fox said...

Amartel:

Great questions. I am trying to think, myself, of whether I could have done that.

But, even if I wouldn't have done that, I have to confess that I have managed to say cruel things in other ways. Usually because I thought they "deserved" it (irrelevant), or because I was "provoked," or because I just didn't think about how it felt for the other person...at all.

And I can readily imagine, in this case, there was no thinking...at all.

ndspinelli said...

Father, Wise words. Forgiveness was a VERY tough one for me. I'm tough on myself and others. But, w/ the grace of God I was shown the way. It is a weight lifted like none other I have ever experienced.

I agree with the post, Shaq was an idiot to do what he did, and Lord knows why he did it. At least he apologized. I can't say I've never done something stupid that didn't warrant an apology. Hell I do it regularly.

The important question for Shaq to answer for himself, is why did he do it at all...what was the motivation?

Full disclosure...I have little use for basketball. Only ever met one Detroit player and that was John Salley who seemed like a pretty good guy. It was in his prime and he took time to talk at length with a lot of regular people at Fishbone's here.

Lets cut Shaq some slack. He's just a tall enormous guy who became a famous zillionaire because he's tall and enormous. His talent was basically shouldering/backing other players away and dunking the basketball.

Otherwise, he's no more intelligent or moral than the average guy on the street. Good he apologized, but you wonder why a man with millions can't think of better things to do then insult people on instagram.

rcocean said...

BTW, we're all built differently. I've never been one to launch unprovoked attacks on people, not out any inner goodness, but because it didn't seem to get me anywhere or accomplish anything.

Do bullies lack empathy or do they just get some pleasure from mocking and deriding others?

sakredkow said...

He gets called on it.
He apologizes.
His apology is accepted.

What's wrong with that?

sakredkow said...

Personally I'm looking forward to the Israelis and the Palestinians forgiving each other. This is nothing.

Trooper York said...

The Palestinians will never forgive anything. It is their intransigence that is at the root of the problems of the Middle East. They can not run a nation. Look at what they are doing to the West Bank and Gaza.

The only thing they understand is a boot on their throat.
