Ted Talk Video: The Oldest Living Things in the World

"Artist Rachel Sussman has spent years researching the science behind each shot, tracking down researchers to find out what they know — and then figuring out exactly where she needs to head next. “I try to approach them as portraits,” she says of her images. “I want to differentiate them from landscapes or straight documentary; these organisms have so much character and in some way they are all individuals.” In these often quiet, calm images, it’s the story beneath the surface that counts."

I, I, I, me, me, me, feelings, feelings, feel felt, more innocent time, I, I, I, male, climate change, impact, I, I, I, oh shut up and show us the old stuff. Thankfully she does get around to it. Oops, vulnerable permafrost melt. I, I, I.

Things change. Get over it.

We sorely need a new chant. "We're humanity, we're awesome, get over it!" And keep saying that over and over and over an dover an dover Andover Andover until it blends into their brains and means nothing.

(jelly fish, not so immortal when you eat them and poop them out. Try regenerating then.)

Same with Shinseski, platitude platitude platitude, bromide, bromide, bromide, truism truism, truism, please shut up and tell us who you are going to fire immediately, better, which dozens you intend to fire immediately then you'll be worth turning off mute.

I got the sense there was a little voice inside her head going "I've arrived, I'm at Ted's" over and over and over an dover an dover Andover Andover, until a smile would break through her face making her momentarily unserious. Kind of charming in a way.

"Comprised"? "Composed" would have been a better word choice.

As for tat choice - how about none? That would have been a brilliant and nonconformist choice.

Valley Girl speak is never a good choice.

Old things die - is that really a disaster?

Indoctrinated idiots apparently live forever.

I see a MacArthur Grant in her future. She will live long and prosper. It is good to have someone publicizing the plight of Siberian permafrost bacteria. Too many people are indifferent to their fate.

There must be some living creature in Greenland that would benefit from global warming but, thanks to Ms. Sussman we are aware of the difficulties lichen face on this mankind blighted planet.....Ms. Sussman is herself a kind of clonal growth that has achieved near immortality. She's the latest sprouting of those scientific Frenchmen who divided time into decimals and the Russian Marxists who devined that the best way to improve agricultural efficiency was to kill all the successful farmers.....I thought the video was interesting. Long lived creatures inspire awe, but they would be even more awe inspiring if they weren't used as product placement in a global warming commercial.

I did a post that will be coming out in August for the cutting down of an almost 5000 year old Bristle Cone pine tree in 1964 (radio lab did a great bit on it). I am going to link this to it.
