AP: Thailand's martial law gives rise to selfies

AP: Sometimes you never know when the opportunity for an interesting selfie will present itself.

When Thailand's military declared martial law early Tuesday, troops appeared on the streets at some key intersections in Bangkok. That didn't necessarily mean the situation was tense, however.

Bangkok residents going about their morning routine didn't hesitate to stop and snap a few photos on their smartphones.

Some posed with soldiers, who complied amiably.

Soldiers should always comply amiably with pretty ladies... particularly if they are Thai ladies!

Someone needs to invent a new word for when there's more than yourself in the photo.

Helps when the Gestapo wants to know who's side you're on if you can show pix of you mit der Wehrmacht.

Martial law is declared in Thailand and the AP's "big story" is that people are taking selfies?

Well Chip, the social aspect is important, and by social, I mean the online appearance. Selfies are important. But the pinnacle is a non-selfie portrait of you holding an old fashioned white board with your twitter hashtag, written not on twitter but on the white board. You really need to get with the culture. Who cares to know why the military declared martial law in Thailand? What's important is that they did and people can be a part of it with just a selfie. Now if they can only get the soldiers to hold the white board...

I heard in other news, a few entrepreneurs are offering hookups with young women for a small fee, so long as you pay for their shipping, er travel, from Africa. They have an interesting business model for generating their product which creates a great deal of free marketing, even internet marketing direct to twitter and facebook, while not interfering with production. That's cutting edge!

To be fair, that was just one small piece under a much larger "Thailand" category on the AP site. Also, I think the AP and other news sources are pointing out that martial law is no biggie in Thailand. From a piece in Time:

"This is nothing new for the most coup-prone country in the world. Excluding this current incursion, there have been 11 putsches in Thailand and seven coup attempts since the fall of absolute monarchy in 1932.

Even today, the Martial Law Act 1914 gives the army 'superior power' over civilian institutions regarding maintaining public order and security. And so despite 82 years of flirting with various forms of democracy, Thailand has never really been able to keep the military in the barracks or politicians in office for very long."

The Thai's seem like such wonderful people - yet the Army is always taking over and declaring martial law.

Its odd.
