"Video: LA Sheriffs kill 80-year-old man in bed in meth raid gone bad"

"How did an 80-year-old man end up shot to death in his own bed by Los Angeles County deputy sheriffs? Reason’s Zach Weissmuller takes an in-depth look at the death of Eugene Mallory, who died in a hail of bullets triggered by supposedly challenging the deputies with a gun in the hallway of his own home during a meth raid. Only Mallory didn’t get shot in the hallway — he got shot in his bedroom, and the bullets came before the deputy warned him to put his gun down. Did Mallory pick up the gun at all? And what were deputies doing by raiding the house in the first place? Mallory’s widow wants answers:

That'll teach him to deal meth. While asleep. In his own bed. At the age of 80.

But once again, guns should only be in the hands of trained government officials. They know best.

Now shut up and die, serf.

There was an item on Insta a couple of weeks ago about a town that voted against their militarized police, so these stories are starting to have an impact.

Mistakes were made!

The problem is that we all know from "Breaking Bad" that the meth labs are militarized and armed with automatic weapons.

Suppose there is a bona fide murder suspect hiding in a meth crew (not just a bunch "innocent" Walts). Why should any cop go up against that? Maybe we should ignore it instead, huh?

Shouting Thomas said...

@chickenlittle

Don't know much about the specifics of this case, nor really about the specifics of the meth trade.

Sultan Knish published a piece today about the militarization of cops. Parts of that article are pertinent.

AllenS said...

The cops had some expert "smeller". A man who hung around the place and then said that he smelled drugs being made. That's the excuse cops used to raid the house. They did find two marijuana plants growing. So, there's that. Plus they got to shoot their guns.

AllenS said...

I either watched the video, or seen the report on the tv. Some people should at least lose their jobs over this, but I doubt if even that will happen.

There'll probably be a lawsuit, and people who didn't have anything to do with this will pay.

I was on jury duty last May, and there are far too many "thumper" cops on the force. It wasn't like that when I was a kid.

Militarization of the police forces more than likely have contributed to this.

Funny I have a book checked out from the library on this topic - I just haven't had a chance to dip into it yet.

Rise of the Warrior Cop: The Militarization of America's Police Forces [Hardcover] [2013] Radley Balko (1000)

AllenS said...

I don't have to read about it in a book, I've watched it happen over my lifetime.

AllenS said...

Let me add this, and it's something that I've also noticed. A long time ago, yes, when I was a kid, I knew where some of the cops lived, and they must not have been making much money back then, because they had no more than anyone else if not less.

I think they are under an enormous amount of pressure to show results for their higher wages, and pull over as many people as they possibly can and issue as many tickets that they can to justify to management that they are worth the money.

You can't do that by being Mr. Niceguy.

Someone, someday, will be writing an interesting social history of how American conservatism went from being the biggest defender of local law enforcement to one of its biggest critics.

I'm sure the role of militarization, battering ram drug busts gone wrong, dog shootings, corrupt unions, and law enforcement vs the 2nd amendment will all play large roles in that future book.

It's a power thing. You see the same thing happening with the IRS.

Quartering large bodies of armed troops among us is not a problem. Do you know of any troops taking over civilian houses to be quartered?

AllenS said...

old history book. The British are not quartering their troops in our houses, and haven't for about 200 years.

Meade said...

We were all British 200+ years ago. And the government then oppressed us by quartering militarized police among us who got away with murder.

AllenS said...

What does that have to do with the video? If Althouse were here, she'd delete your comments because you are not talking about the video. Stay with the program, and it's got nothing to do with the British and 200 years ago.

Chip Ahoy said...

Allen, no, they are not. But police are. Insty linked a few outrageous examples of "get out, we need your place to make a bust next door."

No civil rights at all, no protection except for outrage.

I am alarmed at the amount of military vehicles and other military equipment being soaked up by cities from Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Had I known all that equipment would return here in the hands of various state police and other militarized agencies I'd never have agreed to any foreign aggression, and now I'm sorry I did agree. That would be the reason to be thinking from the beginning, no way, Jose, think of something else.

Leland said...

This is one of two stories last week out of California regarding police stories that Insty linked. The other was that no officers will be held accountable for shooting up the truck of the two asian female paper delivery ladies that LA cops thought was a big black former male cop. When that many officers can make such a mistake in broad daylight and face no charges; sadly, I'm not even surprised they can also get away with shooting an 80 year old man in his bed. Ok, a little surprised that they at least hit the 80 year old man.

AllenS said...

Chip, you tell the police "no, you cannot have my house" and they will not remove you.

I'm not sure if what's being talked about are the police removing people from an area when there is a stand off or hostage situation.

Our police and military are not asking to be quartered in your house.

Trooper York said...

There is a new series on STARS about pirates that looks pretty good.

They incorporate real historical figures with characters from "Treasure Island."

Trooper York said...

It's called "Black Sails."

It is sort of relevant to this discussion.

Revenant said...

Quartering large bodies of armed troops among us is not a problem. Do you know of any troops taking over civilian houses to be quartered?

Here's one example.

You could argue that police don't qualify as "troops", but I'd have to disagree. Maybe fifty or a hundred years ago they didn't, but today the main difference between police and soldiers is that the latter are better trained and less likely to kill innocent people.

Revenant said...

Also, Allen, the objection in the Declaration wasn't solely to the fact that the soldiers were living in people's houses. It was the dispersal of soldiers throughout the population, to keep an eye on everybody, that was the real cause for concern. That's the reason for the "among us" wording.

It is certainly true that the government rarely forces people to let police live with them. But they don't need to; there are millions of them personnel embedded throughout every one of our communities, and they enjoy effectively unlimited powers of search and seizure.

Meade's larger point, that the modern American government is worse than the one we rebelled against a few centuries back, is basically correct. Hell, the Boston Tea Party happened over government behavior that wouldn't even make page one of the paper today.

AllenS said...

Revenant. There is also a lawsuit that's been filed. Armed police are not armed troops. Armed troops, and let's be specific, are military. The police did take over a house, but it was not for the reason to be "quartered" as if they were military troops wishing to stay for days, weeks, months, or longer.

AllenS said...

Meade doesn't have a larger point.

AllenS said...

Again, there is a lawsuit that's been filed. You couldn't file a lawsuit back when the British were here.

It is certainly true that the government "rarely forces" people to let police live with them

Name one occasion.

AllenS said...

Name 3 occasions.

Meade said...

Yes I do. Here is my larger point:

"Militarization of the police forces more than likely have contributed to this."

I'm sorry chick, but your hypo was based on a tv series, so I thought you were be a facetious.

Give the cops a MP-5 and the responsibility that comes with it. That seems to be Reasons argument.

Det. Hobbs should be held responsible for his crap intel. I'd be more lenient with Sgt. Bones, except for the inconsistency in his testimony and the actual evidence. Bones had a few seconds to make his decision. Hobbs had time to be sure he was making the right decision. For certain, Mr. Mallory had to act to a situation he shouldn't have expected to occur in his own home during the middle of the night. Mr. Mallory did nothing to deserve to die. Shouldn't someone be held responsible for his death, other than Mr. Mallory himself?

Semantics. Once upon a time there was a big difference between the two, but not today.

Revenant said...

Again, there is a lawsuit that's been filed. You couldn't file a lawsuit back when the British were here.

Yes, you could. Our legal system IS derived from the British one, you know.

And you keep saying "there is a lawsuit" like that makes it all better -- like the mere ability to *sue* people who committed a violent crime against you somehow makes it all better, even though the criminals in question enjoy immunity from prosecution and even though your chances of victory in the suit are far from guaranteed.

The cops who killed that 80-year-old man will get off with nothing more than a reprimand, if that. Why aren't they facing the death penalty for murder? If I kicked in your door and shot you in your bedroom I would be, even if I babbled some defense about how I smelled drugs in your house.

Revenant said...

I see no one wants to comment on the point I raised earlier at 11:01. Why send a cop with a knife to a gunfight?

See, the problem here is that you're taking it as a given that the police needed to stage a military assault in the first place. Yes, if you're staging a military assault, use military weaponry -- duh.

But take your example of a murderer hanging out surrounded by other heavily armed criminals. Question: what kind of utter fucking retard settles on "storm the place guns blazing" as their solution? You set up surveillance, you wait for the guy to leave, and you arrest him then. You only go in guns blazing when there is imminent danger of innocent people being harmed or killed and no other alternative presents itself.

In this case police claimed they smelled a meth lab. Now, let's pretend for a minute that the police aren't lying their asses off and somehow mistook the smell of two marijuana plants for the smell of cooking meth.

What was the imminent danger? And don't try saying "the meth lab could blow up or start a fire", because even if that was a valid concern "firing guns in the lab" would most definitely not be the solution to it.

There was absolutely no reason for these dipshit Rambo wanna-bes to be carrying military weaponry. Get a warrant, show up with some cop cars, knock on the door, arrest people.

Finally it dawns on one or two of them, only after having their civil rights thoroughly violated, that maybe, just maybe, the government is not here to help. Notice how this kid keeps giving his progressive bona fides (I'm a good person, really), like that's going to make his story more credible.

That old man tried to stand up and he got shot down like a dog. Like you will when the powers that be want to take you down.

If you have to go maybe that is the way to go. Swinging. Not crying.

Pussy football players are a long ways away from an innocent man laying his bed. The government will be happy to kill that old man. The pussy football will get a lot of dough just for crying like a little girl.

It's sick out there and it's getting sicker.

Whatever you say Icepick.

If Martin is your hero I hope he comes back to play with your team.

The "Catholics" messed up when they let gay predators become priests. There were almost no little girls molested. There were thousands of children molested by school teachers every year. Both straight and gay. But who cares about that. Their union keeps them employed while they sit in a rubber room and collect a check. They have a good lawyer. Maybe Martin's parents for that matter.

Hey don't worry about it. It is a new world. Football players will have their lawyers with them on the field and the locker room so no one will be mean to them. I am sorry for his boo boo. Sometimes the world can be so mean.
