The Most Racist City In The U.S?

It's Madison, Dane County, Wisconsin according to researchers at Race to Equity -- a Madison-based initiative started by the Wisconsin Council on Children and Families -- and reported here at the SocialistWorker.org website.

Excuse me for a moment while I smirk.

Let's look at the data:
In 2011, the unemployment rate was 25.2 percent for Blacks compared to just 4.8 percent for whites. Nationally, the unemployment rate was 18 percent for Blacks and 8 percent for whites.
In the same year, "over 54 percent of African American Dane County residents lived below the federal poverty line, compared to 8.7 percent of whites, meaning Dane County Blacks were over six times more likely to be poor than whites.
More than 74 percent of Black children live under the poverty level as opposed to just 5.5 percent of white children. The report suggested "that this 13 to 1 disparity ratio may constitute one of the widest Black/white child poverty gaps that the Census Surveys reported for any jurisdiction in the nation.
In 2011, African American youth in the Madison Public School District had about a 50 percent on-time high school graduation rate, compared to 85 percent for white students.
African American adolescents, while constituting less than 9 percent of the county's youth population, made up almost 80 percent of all the local kids sentenced to the state's juvenile correctional facility in 2011.
Madison is one of the most liberal cities in the U.S.  It's detractors call it 50 square miles surrounded by reality, an observation that is funny because it's true.  We know liberals aren't racist because they constantly tell us that they aren't (and that conservatives are) ad nauseum.

What is to blame for Madison's racism?  The study identifies several causes.
The University of Wisconsin.  The U turns out a lot of well-educated young people who stay in Madison after graduation making it difficult for undereducated people to find jobs.  Additionally the 40,000 students are a reliable source of part-time workers who also make it difficult for others (Blacks in this instance) to find work.
Segregated neighborhoods that confine Blacks to a limited number of sectors in Madison.
A criminal justice system biased against blacks.
The report  concludes that "the alarming truth is that our numbers, taken as a whole, suggest that the distance between whites and Blacks (in terms of well-being, status and outcomes) is as wide or wider in Dane County than in any jurisdiction (urban or rural, North or South) for which we have seen comparable statistics."

Socialists calling Progressives racist It doesn't get better than this.

Somewhere in Madison a graduate student is writing an article blaming Bush and the Tea Party for this problem.  And the student will be a white male or female, living in a nearly all-white housing area, and will have only a few token Black friends.  The student will be under the guidance of a white professor who lives in a neighborhood of mostly white people who shop at Whole Foods and feel fully enlightened about race matters because they voted for Barack Obama and like classic Otis Redding albums.

Madison is racist. and blind to its own hypocrisy.

This is so rich. One of the most lily universities in America, also one of the most liberal, being listed as the cause of racism in Madison.

My my Inga...that was a quick drive by. You must have "delete" on some kind of speed dial.

I see the article acknowledges that if you have more skills you are more likely to be employed.

This is a huge breakthrough for the librul mind. Or as Sloe Joe Biden might say "this is a big f-ing deal".

Michael Haz said...

Aridog - I did that. On posts I put up, I have little tolerance for certain things.

Aridog said...

On TOP's post reference this article, one commenter cited Detroit for having just elected a white mayor.

Whoopeee... We're the least racist, 85%+ black and everyone is out of work, but we elected a white guy mayor.

Madison loves unions more than poor people. School voucher opposition, job-killing minimum wage proposals, layers of entrepreneur-stifling regulation, extremely high property taxes ... all ways to protect the state-employed unionistas and shut down advancement for others.

But just to get some off-campus diversity, the city imports people of color from Chicago with public housing, lenient unemployment benefits, and (until Obamacare killed it) generous health insurance. Of course "those people" are kept in segregated neighborhoods off the beaten path so that one need not mingle and then they are encouraged to make use of abortion clinics so the population doesn't get out of hand....

I absolutely detest the pomposity of the place.

Aridog said...

Michael...good policy. Otherwise we'd get 497 comments more than half of which would be all about the LPN.

My brother teaches at Marquette in Milwaukee, and I have on occasion spoken with some of his black students on their lives among the cheeseheads.

They, to a (wo)man, think that Wisconsin is quite racist. This doesn't surprise me. Wisconsin is full of Germans & Scandinavians who, historically speaking, have not been the most racially tolerant sorts on the planet. Germans & Scandinavians in Europe may have war guilt & PC social democracy, respectively, to hammer out some of their racist tendencies, but their cousins in the northern reaches of the USA were spared those burdens.

bagoh20 said...

Yea, I heard about that place somewhere. They still have "white" and "colored" water fountains I hear.

Rabel said...

You might think that these sorts of disparities would lead to racial discord within the city.

But you would be wrong. Everything is under control and there will be no unrest in the good city of Madison.

Here's how that control is maintained. Per the report, in 2012, 5,568 of the 18,875 Black adults in Dane county were arrested.

Put another way, that's 295 per 1000 Black adults placed in handcuffs compared to 82 per 1000 Black adults arrested nationwide.

On the bright side (or the dark side) things are trending for the better. Because in 2005 an amazing 441 per 1000 Black adults in Dane county were arrested. That's a number that would make Grand Kleagle blush.

"The Wisconsin Idea" as practiced in Madison looks an awful lot like the Selma Idea from around 1963.

Rabel - those are astounding stats. Are you sure it was not 295arrests per 1000 blacks versus 295 of every 1000 blacks was arrested? There is a big difference.

bagoh20 said...

So in 2005 almost half the blacks were arrested? If that's true it's worse than Selma. Something is wrong with that stat, or Madison is a dangerous place to forget your sunblock.

Rabel said...

The arrest stats are from page 39 of the Race to Equity report. (pdf file)

It's the latter. the comparison to the national rates is damning.

Probably doesn't account for repeaters, but this is national "define you stats as you please day" so I'm good with that.

I don't think Lem is all that sweet. He never sent me any of his panties.

In my experience, cities in the north, especially the so-called liberal cities are more racist than most southern cities. In much of the south, Blacks and Whites seem to get along pretty well .

The root problem that the report about Madison did not touch is culture. There is a lower expectation for academic success and achievement among Blacks than among Whites, especially in Madison which is both a university and a government city.

bagoh20 said...

All the trouble makers I saw in the Meadehouse videos were white, and none of them were getting arrested. Come to think of it, none of the shots at lunch showed any brothers at the counter either. We need to bring in the Feds and Eric Holder to clean up that racist cesspool. I bet it's even worse out in lake country.

The Madison schools hate black kids. They don't know WTF to do w/ them since all they have are ineffective pansy men and frightened women that those "boys of color" might touch them. We have a black friends who pulled his kids out and put them in Edgewood.

I bet this starts some liberal hand wringing shit, which for a change would be justified. I wonder if they will occupy the Capitol building for a month over it, and sing and stuff like that.

Madison being liberal or not I knew by the age of 8 I needed to get out of Wisconsin pronto. I was plotting my escape at 9 years of age.

And in doing that I became successful personally and professional.

But I still love to VISIT Wisconsin briefly and cherish many Wisconsin customs....especially old school supper clubs....yum.

tits.

No, it's much more egalitarian out away from Oz. As long as you can throw hay bales or cut wood all day, you're all right out there.

Wisconsin Republicans are famous for getting their farm subsidies though.

There is a website where you can see what these takers are getting every year. Incredible. Anywhere from 5k too 500k a year.

If those things you say about Spinelli are things you consider to be problems, then you should ponder the fact that they are also all things that are also said about you at more than one blog, and by many people.

Just sayin.

Ingeburg Mengele is one sick liar. But she is disturbed. I cannot imagine having a nurse as psycho as she is anywhere near me, no matter my condition. No wonder she was fired. And her husband chose to die rather than face another minute with that harridan.

My thanks to whomever deleted the comments by her. Amazon was pretty responsive in deleting her comment slandering both myself and my wife. She is posting as an alias on another blog and was warned on the first day she would be banned if the personal stuff didn't end. being a manic phase, she'll probably get shitcanned there soon. After being deleted here she went there and did a quick late night sniper attack. Those demons are the worst in the middle of the night. It was w/ the help of people complaining that Amazon responded. And, it took help here to have the attacks end. "It takes a village."

Ugh with all the drama.

Something funny I've noticed from moving to a very Red State to a purple/bluish one.

People here are way more segregated here than they ever were in my home State. Somehow white people (except for the Midwest/Eastern transplants) managed to get along fine with a Latino or black next door neighbor, heck with half the neighborhood full of them. They didn't see it as a reflection of neighborhood quality.

Here, I had a darker Japanese (?!?!?!) friend stopped by the cops because he was walking to the grocery store. Someone reported a suspicious person in the neighborhood. My spouse's black co-workers from NJ were advised to move an hour away from work, because they'd feel more "comfortable" there. Red Staters don't care nearly as much about making sure people are "comfortable."

So, yeah, Madison. I'm not surprised.
