The Dreaded Nationwide Knish Shortage

The world's largest maker of knishes had to shut down because of a fire.  Delis and restaurants across America, including Katz's Deli in NYC, have to go knishless until Thanksgiving, by which time the factory will be able to resume production. 

Oy vey.

Gabila's Knishes, which sells about 15 million knishes a year, makes what its fans believe are the best knishes in earth.  They are square, not round, deep fried to an crispy exterior, and they ooze knishy goodness when cut open.  Mmmmm.....knishes.  Don't you want one just thinking about them?

What thing do you eat that you would miss if their factory or store burned down?

For me, it would be the pizza from Glorioso's Deli.  Anyone can sell pizza, but Glorioso's is like everyone else's pizza like filet mignon is to soup bones.  First and second generation Italian owners, they grind their own wheat for the flour, cut and grind their own pork for sausage, make their own pepperoni and tomato sauce.    I buy pizza from them unbaked, then cook it on a very hot gas grill outside.  Crisp crust thinner than a cracker.  Utterly delicious.

It was taco night last night...

I can't think of anything off hand because we mostly make things from "scratch".

The ground is the factory...

My step mother was visiting, during the world series with my father. She had a fit because the chicken she ordered killed was switched for a male. She called the place and carried on the phone I thought she was going to take it back.

It was kind of hilarious. she showed us something that looked like a pair of kidneys she said only males have.

I didn't ask if those were the chickens balls. I did imagine it.

Clearly, a Federal program based on "big, juicy ideas," as Ritmo would say, is needed to be sure that the hardship of being knish-less is never visited upon poor people again.

Big, juicy ideas are always needed to fix things.

I cannot explain why I now have a craving for knishes, even though I've never eaten one.

Is it a sexual thing? Do I need help? Therapy of some sort?

Given Katz charges about $19 for a sandwich, you would think the Puerto Rican guys working there could improvise and make some knishes.

BTW, Harry Met Sally was on last night.

Yes, Ritmo said that Republicans shouldn't be bitching about Obamacare unless they've got a "big, juicy idea" to replace it.

We couldn't consider things like, say, letting people make individual decisions in a free market, could we? That would be a disaster!

Hubig's fried fruit pies in New Orleans. NOTHING like them in the world (I prefer either the chocolate or coconut-filled ones, tho the pineapple ones are good too) and when the factory burned down last year we ALL went into withdrawal. Hubigs hasn't reopened yet, sadly. (Check 'em out on Wiki)

April Allie - Take some well seasoned mashed potatoes, wrap the potatoes in dough and bake (or fry). There's your potato knish. Every culture has variants of potatoes, kasha (buckwheat groats), spinach etc. wrapped in dough and then baked or fried.

Yeah ricpic - why don't you just call me Allieoop while you're at it. I know I'm crazy, insane in fact, but that is harsh. At least I don't stalk Amazon.

It already happened. The factory didn't burn down but the food police made it happen. I miss Mr. Salty Pretzels. The ones that came in a blue box so that they wouldn't get crushed in shipping. They were so great. Salty as promised with a hint of sweetness on the outer crust from the process of cooking. Crisp. But nooooooo.....we can't have salty items as a snack because some people have no self control. We must take them away from everyone.

So....I make my own pretzels. They aren't the crisp hard pretzels but rather the soft preboiled and then baked yeast raised pretzels....and I can put as much damned salt on them as I want.

Other than that....Olives. The area in the valley south of us is a huge grower of olives and everytime we go by, I stop by their showroom and buy olives. Anchovy stuffed. Garlic stuffed. Almond stuffed. Blue cheese stuffed and packed in olive oil. Pitted Kalamatas. Many different styles and types of olive oil too. Their tasting room is great. Fresh cooked french bread chunks to dip into the various olive oils or to eat inbetween tasting the different olives.

Nom nom nom. Man....I haven't had breakfast yet. I'm hungry.

A good knish is deep fried and crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Pierogis are soft all over.

I fried my pierogis yesterday so they're crunchy. The leftover ones were fried to crunchy because they started out cold.
