"Sanford, Fla. Reverses Gun Ban on Neighborhood Watch Volunteers"

"Police in the Florida city where George Zimmerman shot and killed Trayvon Martin have backed off a plan to explicitly ban neighborhood watch volunteers from carrying guns while on duty."
Earlier this month, police in Sanford, Florida, announced new rules on how civilian patrols can operate in an attempt to revive the program's reputation.
Sanford Police Chief Cecil Smith, in a phone interview on Wednesday, refused repeated requests to explain the reversal.

That's an interesting use of the word "explicitly."

What's the problem with advertising to burglars and home invaders that they aren't likely to meet any real resistance?

Nothing could go wrong.

Shocking. A local police department and police chief discovered they do not have the authority to override the Constitution and sundry federal and state laws unilaterally by edict. What is this world coming to? I feel the vapors coming on...

Just do a few forced colonoscopies and anal probes on some neighborhood watch volunteers.

Problem solved.

The legal dept. pointed out to him that the "Neighboorhood Watch" program is not a City sponsored activity, and the police have no say over its activities beyond what they have over any other civic organization.

There may also have been a good deal of popular (electoral) disapproval.

From the Reuters article:

"Sanford was thrust in the national spotlight last year when Zimmerman, a former neighborhood watch captain, gunned down Martin, an unarmed black teenager. Prosecutors accused Zimmerman of chasing down and killing Martin, but a jury acquitted him in July of murder."

I have to admit that that is an impressive piece of propaganda. Their editor probably touched herself when she read the first draft.

Yea, that's pretty bad Rabel.

An honest account isn't hard:

Zimerman acting as a neighborhood watchman followed Martin while calling police. Martin attacked Zimmerman who pulled a gun and shot Martin to death.

That's the facts without any need to assume anything not in evidence.

Of course also clearly in evidence and fine to report is that Zimmerman shot Martin from a position on his back with Martin on top assaulting and injuring him.

I wonder if any young thug lives have been saved by the lesson that assaulting a stranger on the street is very dangerous, not to mention the people saved from being assaulted.

"I wonder if any young thug lives have been saved"

That is a Forbidden Topic.

Location should be Sanford, not Orlando. They're not even in the same county, nor the same state legal district.

I liked Sanford and Son. Redd Foxx was such a nice old gentleman. He never even used bad language.
