“I am not pro-gay marriage,”

"Liz Cheney said in a statement responding to an apparent push poll against her in Wyoming. “I believe the issue of marriage must be decided by the states, and by the people in the states, not by judges and not even by legislators, but by the people themselves.”"
Mary Cheney, the younger sister of Liz Cheney, a Wyoming Senate candidate, sharply criticized her sister’s stance on same-sex marriage and urged her own Facebook friends to share the message.
Posting on Facebook on Friday evening, Mary Cheney, who is gay and married her longtime partner last year, wrote: “For the record, I love my sister, but she is dead wrong on the issue of marriage.”
I agree with Liz Chaney. If the decision has to be made, it should be made by the people.

This NYT article is trending fourth most viewed.

Rubbish. Nonsense. Evidence of a total lack of knowledge of how a legislative assembly works in a Republic.

Define precisely how "the people" would determine anything equitably as an amorphous mob?

All we need is a goofy next-door neighbor and this story might make a decent sit-com

Eugene O'Neill would probably want to turn it into a drink-soaked family tragedy, though.

I don't like Liz Cheney. And, she's a carpetbagger in this race just like Hillary was in hers. I don't like carpetbaggers in any party or state.

Good for her.

The only measure of whether a person is fit to associate with is their position on government recognition of gay marriage.

The NYT is conflicted. There is no Matthew Shepard-like candidate out there to get behind (and for them, Wyoming will always be about Matthew Shepard just as assuredly as the South will always be about James Earl Chaney).

The last line of the article gives it away that Liz Cheney actually better for their causes than the incumbent is. But they're still conflicted.

That makes you a H8ey H8er Lem. You have to support not only allowing gay marriage, but mandating gay marriage for all.

Althouse has a scientifically proven best pop song ever post, omitting Une jeune filette.

So popular that all my old bookmarks to it are cancelled accounts for copyright infringement.

The French take copyright seriously.

Of course people who believe that it is a human right for same sex couples to have the equal access to civil marriage as opposite sex couples will say rights aren't something that should be subject to majority rule or opinion.

So the argument is then fought over what human rights are.

Liz Cheney must be destroyed. Why is she even running? We don't need another Cheney, Bush, Clinton, or Kennedy in the Senate or white house.

The great thing about Obama - it dies with him - one and done. No family dynasty.

And why are we still discussing gay marriage? I thought the Republican cave was supposed to "put the issue behind us" so we could talk about tax cuts or something.

What a great sister she is.

phx: That's how it looks to me except that gay marriage advocates, like Althouse, want skip that argument and pretend it's already settled, thus anyone who disagrees with gay marriage is by definition a bigot.

phx: I'd add though that pro-gay marriage advocates are overwhelmingly liberals and liberals don't care how they win.

If a clear majority of Americans were pro-gay marriage, liberals would have no problem whatsoever beating the drums that gay marriage is What the People Want and demanding with tears in their eyes that America live up to its Democratic Ideals.

Witness their constant flip-flopping on the filibuster. When Democrats are out of power, the filibuster is an absolute necessity to stem Republicans excesses. When Democrats are in power, the filibuster is antiquated holdover from the past abused by Republicans which prevents the government from working.

Your base is white old southern baptists.

Either evolve or enjoy the wilderness in national elections.

You will keep your gerry mandered districts but you will never will a national election.

It's really that simple.

Titus does us the favor of providing a fine illustration of gay marriage tactics. There will be no reasoned argument between equals. Just threats, snideness, and insults from gay marriage advocates.

I was on the fence about gay marriage for a long time, but no more. To me this is the voice of a kind of fascism. I oppose it.

It's really that simple.

Funny, I hear mostly "threats, snideness and insults" from anti-gay marriage opponents as well.

I don't believe in State-sanctioned marriage at all anyway, so you staunch opponents and staunch supporters can have each other. You're a marriage made in heaven, if you'll pardon the expression.

Palladian: Clearly you're not above snideness yourself.

Sure, both sides resorted to such measures. However, at Althouse I remember much reasoned debate from conservatives on the issue and very little from the other side.

Either you think there's nothing wrong with being a homo or you don't.

And that's where the bigotry part comes in so you'll need to own that if you want to be intellectually honest.

Is there really so very much to talk about?
