"The Muslim Brotherhood, founded in 1928, came to power a year ago when Morsi was elected in the country's first free presidential elections. The election came after the overthrow of autocrat Hosni Mubarak in a popular uprising in 2011.
The fundamentalist group has been banned for most of its 85-year history and repeatedly subjected to crackdowns under Mubarak's rule. While sometimes tolerated with its leaders allowed to be part of the political process, members regularly faced long bouts of imprisonment and arbitrary detentions.

..."We are calling for declaring the Brotherhood as a terrorist group," said Mohammed Abdel-Aziz, one of the leaders of the Tamarod youth movement that had organized mass rallies calling for Morsi's ouster.
...Since Morsi was deposed in the popularly backed military coup, the Brotherhood has stepped up its confrontation with the new leadership, rallying thousands of supporters in sit-ins and vowing not to leave until Morsi is reinstated." [my bolding]

"On Thursday afternoon President Barack Obama announced that the U.S. would be cancelling a joint military exercise with the Egyptian Army over its violent crackdown on supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Shortly afterwards, Egypt Independent reported that Putin had called an extraordinary session in the Kremlin to put “all Russian military facilities ‘at the Egyptian military’s disposal.’” The report, which cited several sources without providing any further details about them, also said that “Putin will discuss Russian arrangements for joint-military exercises with the Egyptian army.”

Add to the mix that our allies, Israel, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia, are calling for President Obama to continue foreign aid to the Egyptian military. Israel claims continued funding is essential to the Egypt-Israel peace treaty, and Qatar and Saudi Arabia claim that the MB is a threat to secular governments in the Middle East. It may seem contradictory that two countries that use their wealth to export fundamentalist Wahabbism/Salafism are anti-MB, except that what the MB and other Islamist groups want is not secular governments, but Islamic Caliphates, which are antithetical to wealthy and decadent emirs and princes working in concert with the Great Satan.
