Taliban office in Doha, Qatar

Peace talks between Karzai's Afghan government and the pre-9/11 government, the Taliban, stalled in June when the Taliban set up a political office in Doha, Qatar. Flying their white flag with Quranic verse, they claimed representation of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. An "enraged" Karzai accused them trying to set up a government in exile. Currently, there are back channel negotiations to get the talks re-started. The Taliban is unwilling to compromise on the flag or the name.

The Taliban representative also says they are willing to accept the current Afghan constitution, with the exception of three unidentified clauses, and that "Taliban leadership was ready to acknowledge that it made a mistake in denying girls access to education and politics. He said the Taliban were prepared to accept women as lawmakers."

I like that tool-shed-welded-to-the-front-of-the-building look. Very down home.

I'm curious to know the opium market's response to this latest news.

Can't we drone that little metal welded building? They're all there, in one spot. Get busy!

The countries where the US has intervened over the years. I wonder how they are doing, compared to countries the US has not intervened.

A little bit off topic, maybe.

No this is exactly the right question. The problem will be finding a country where the US has not interfered. Somewhat related, a map of all the countries invaded by England.

He said the Taliban were prepared to accept women as lawmakers.

A boxing match transition between preparation and acceptance is sometimes clearly demarcated by the landing of a white towel.

Of course, that is a means to ensure survival to fight again another day.

Well said, Lem. It's one thing for representatives of the Taliban to say this, and another for it to be carried out by all Taliban.

The fact that His Awesomeness said 5 years ago all he needed was to sit down and talk with them about this tells you all you need to know about why we're still talking about it.

It's always nice when your enemy tells you where they are. Why aren't they dead yet?

Or maybe not. We shouldn't be judging whether or not to go to war with a country based on whether or not the other country will be better off afterwards.

No chance that happens in Doha.
