Bless their little hearts, the mean lady made the children cry

These portraits of children crying brought photographer Jill Greenberg hate mail. What an awful thing to to do, people wrote, but Jill didn't care, what the heck, you make children laugh and smile, don't you? It's the same thing. You go, here's my cell phone. Oh, wait, give that back, then photograph the kid's reaction you provoked. What's wrong with that?

It's ART !

And political statement besides. About Bush's failed economic policies. It is justified, how else is Jill going to reach people emotionally? Huh? Emotion. It's all about emotion. It's how children communicate about anything at all save for politics and its how emotional photographers loyal to Party uber alles communicate. And it's good stuff too. Who doesn't like seeing kids cry? You should see 'em at Slate

And now it's in book form. How 'bout that?

Obviously this is not for low information voters. It is not even for no information voters. And not just for passive un information voters either. This is emotional manipulation by and for fierce anti information voters. And look over there how well it works.

Hilarious that she justifies the photo shoots by explaining that the kids were really just throwing tantrums.

And that is her chosen metaphor for her feelings toward the Bush administration's ploicies.

Are there people who like to gaze upon artwork depicting a crying child every day?

The most interesting facet of my Facebook page, where I have "friends" of every political persuasion, is that every political faction is frenetically fabricating martyrs.

I'm fed up with Althouse and her inane prattling about the martyrdom of the gays. She's ridiculous.

She might see her former commenters as cry babies.

I think the better explanation is that she and Meade are retreating into a fortress mentality the deeper she digs herself into this absurd gay mania.

The deeper they get into the fortress mentality, the more convinced they become that they're fighting off a horde of vengeful bigots intent on slaughtering the gays.

It's become a comedy.

Shouting Thomas said...

I will drop a completely baseless conjecture here.

My experience is that, when people embark on one of these martyrdom campaigns over sexual issues (and I've seen a lot of that in Woodstock), those people are struggling with their own sexual demons.

My suspicion is that Althouse has something going on sexually that is leading her to this gay mania.

But, I'm just guessing.

Along the path you are treading, I would have a different guess. I don't think it is sexual (or is everything, at the base of it, about sex?), but an attempt to further draw attention to herself, which, oh so ironically, I am feeding now.

On the other hand she may be acting out of repressed guilt that she raised a son who is gay. To be clear, I am not saying gayness is bad.

Guilt plays a role.

As a step-father of a lesbian, let me tell you that the real concern is wanting grandchildren of your own blood.

Wanting progeny to carry on your line is one of the most powerful motivations of every animal.

The damage that Althouse doesn't foresee is what happens in the future after you shred the reciprocal obligation of children to their parents.

That reciprocal obligation is producing progeny of your own blood.

Althouse and Meade are at war with human nature.

Shouting Thomas said...

I'll humor Althouse and Meade (who are watching very closely) a bit more.

Pretty funny that feminist Althouse is now entrenched in this old fashioned love affair between the Damsel in Distress and the White Knight, isn't it?

The feminist bullshit is falling apart bit by bit as she realizes that traditional roles work and the intellectual bullshit doesn't.

Althouse is incredibly hard headed. She's going through the same idiot routine with the gay shit that she went through with feminism.

She probably won't live long enough to give up this crap as she discovers incrementally that her intellect doesn't define the world and that her plans to remake gaydom and the bigots don't make a damned bit of sense in light of actual human experience.

In other words, the old human customs in regard to gaydom work.

KCFleming said...

Oh, intellectual bullshit works, in that it is effective when used as a basis for coercion, but in the long run it fails because it is not sustainable.

EDIT:
I posted the link about rage in response to Freeman Hunt's link.

Her link shows photos that are funny and heart-melting about little kids crying over nothing.

But the art photos in this post show pretty much the same thing (except in being staged), yet I was filled with rage against the artist.

Why did I react that way?

From the same author of my link:
"When you find yourself hating someone (who did not directly hurt you) with blinding rage, know for certain that it is not the person you hate at all, but rather something about them that threatens your identity. Find that thing. This single piece of advice can turn your life around, I guarantee it."

deborah said...

Freeman, that is funny, yet I felt a little guilty laughing. Occasionally my son would launch into crying with what I thought of as his 'black little rain cloud face.' It was adorable and sad at the same time. I took a picture of it once for memory's sake.

Dust Bunny Queen said...

Back to the topic at hand. I am filled with disgust at the photographer and MORE at the parents who would purposely put their children into an emotionally abusive situation. Parents are supposed to protect their children from hurt, not purposely inflict it.

If it were any other situation, other than a bunch of progressives making political use of their children, it would be child abuse. Think of those children who are press ganged into attending protests and carrying signs that fulfilled their parent's ideology. It only seems to be considered child abuse if they are anything other than liberal/progressives.

I am disgusted with anyone who would think that it is alright to harm children for a political propaganda opportunity.

What is wrong with these people and how can we get rid of them?

Regarding Freeman's link. Somehow the photos of those children are much different than the ones in the book.

Every parent has to deal with the crying and tantrums. My daughter used to try that at the age of 3. No cookie until after lunch......Waaah....throw herself on the kitchen floor in grand histrionic style. My response was the one my mother told me that she used when I was doing the same thing. Walk over the kicking screaming child. Go sit in another room and look at a magazine or do something else. When she would follow me into the living room and flop down there for more tantrum (tantrums are really only good is someone is watching), get up and go into another room. Don't say anything....ignore it. Eventually, she would get worn out and I would ask ...."Are you done now?...>Good....You can have a cookie AFTER lunch." Kiss her on her wet slimy cheek and continue with what I was doing in the first place. Sometimes it was really hard to keep a straight face and not laugh at the over the top acting and histrionics.

That is totally different that provoking a tantrum.

KCFleming said...

"That is totally different that provoking a tantrum."

Exactly. Hence my disgust at the tactic.

It reminds me of the debate over using German medical data from WW2 in which Jewish prisoners were drowned, etc, and their vital signs and other data were recorded.

Forced behavior + photography = Art
Forced behavior + lab data = Science.

Pogo ... serious question: is it odd or unusual that I separate "rage" from "hate" almost entirely?

I can express "rage" verbally and physically, but if I truly hate someone or thing I am silent...until I can be shed of them or it. I find the "acknowledgement" inherent in the act of hating to be a reward to the hated, therefore pointless and contradictory.

Beyond that, it takes to much energy to hate.

Of course they are being harmed. The parents are breaking the basic fundamental law of being a parent. TRUST. The children trust that you are going to take care of them and will learn eventually that those things that you do, such as not let them eat sunscreen from Freeman's link, are for their best interests.

TRUST is broken when your parents purposely put you into an emotionally distressing state not for your own good, but for no reason at all that the child can discern. TRUST is broken when your parents purposely or even accidentally allow you to be in an abusive situation.

The difference between Freeman's link and the propaganda photos is miles apart.

Harm doesn't always mean bruises.

Yes. Extinction of the behavior. Sometimes instead of having a tantrum evolve, I would move us out into another situation. Get out of the kitchen....and "Hey. Let's go see what the bunnies are doing in the back yard!" (We raised rabbits for a while) "Sniff .....Ok, Mommy Nip the situation in the bud, so to speak.

The tantrum phase really didn't last all that long. In my case just a few months. They key is to not reward the bad behavior and NOT punish it either.

I do have children, DBQ, including one kid who had a very hard time getting out of the "madder-sadder" emotional state from feelings of injustice. It took a lot of work to deal with that, including helping him to intellectually understand what was going on and that it was important for him to be able to get away from those emotions.

Anyway, I don't think you really disagree with what I wrote. You saw value in prolonging the tantrum in order to teach the kid that tantrums don't get you what you want.

Who knows, maybe some subconscious part of you gave the first cookie knowing it would cause a tantrum, so you could make the point.

The only time I can recall intentionally making my children cry is when they disobeyed and ran into the street in front of our home. while it's a 25, cars exceed 40Mph, so I had to spank two of the three.

I figured I could live with the psychological damage to their egos if it kept them alive.

Brian is also a musician who I run into from time to time.

When I saw him, I told him that his article was a repugnant slander of the people who live in small town America.

He gave me the opportunity to respond as I saw fit, and the article is my response.

I bet Meade and Althouse would much rather see the shit fly here than at their place, I can't blame them. It takes a while to hose down the hippo pool.

Shouting Thomas said...

Althouse desperately needs to take a vacation for a few weeks or a couple of months and get the hell away from the dug in fortress she's created.

I won't judge their marriage, but I can see that being in this together is intensifying their feeling of being under siege.

And, feeling under siege only confirms that they are living in a world of crazy bigots who want to do somebody harm.

Take a vacation, Althouse! Give it up for a while. Go somewhere! Drink yourself stupid and get laid!

Grifters always make it an us against them scenario. They have to be the protectors and the saviors where everyone else is taking advantage of them. So if there is not an enemy to attack then they have to create one to take the eyes away from what they are doing.

I could only suggest that the family consult with an elder law attorney who is experienced in dealing with the ramifications of unscrupulous opportunists that take advantage of lonely elderly spinsters. This way the assets might be preserved for the declining years in way that allows dignity to be preserved.

Ha! 8 assumptions. 1 promise. 2 assertions. 6 judgements. All of them wrong.

You have to laugh.

I watched a great movie over that was close to the subject, Trooper.

It's called "Intolerable Cruelty."

The Dude said...

You are assuming a fact that is not in evidence.

Shouting Thomas said...

Intolerable Cruelty was hilarious.

George Clooney (of all people) plays a lawyer who's specialty is assisting beautiful young women meet, marry and divorce the wealthy ex-husband of their dreams.

Dear Lemulites:

Stop taking the fucking bait.

Yours for a better tomorrow,

Shouting Thomas said...

@Michael,

Didn't I just do that?

Trooper York said...

You are watching it again Shouting. Just with ugly people.

I think we might be better off just averting our eyes.

It is just so sad and sordid.

Methadras said...

You just have to learn to ignore certain things whenever they show up on the blogs of your choice. A much better outcome will ensue.

Shouting Thomas said...

Two decades ago, I worked for a corporate law firm.

Not knowing when or how to chuck it all and stop working is a common affliction of ambitious lawyers.

LMAO! Poo flingers are sad at their own sordid behavior.

It is to laugh, truly.

I have been watching this old TV show called "The Guardian" with that Assuie dude who plays 'The Mentalist" now.

It is about a lawyer who got caught using cocaine and had to do 1000 hours of community service at a legal clinic because his dad (Dabney Coleman) fixed it for him.

It is pretty interesting and really shows the dynamics of a big time law firm which in the show is based in Pittsburgh. Or at least how most of us imagine how a law firm works.

Shouting Thomas said...

A big law firm is a gigantic S&M machine.

Everybody who works in one of those joints hates it except for the few managing partners who were born lawyers.

When the lawyers are young and fresh out of law school, they all declare that they're going to make their fortune in a few years and get the hell out.

I saw one guy actually do that.

The rest just beat themselves into the ground with overwork and stress, go through several marriages and patronize high priced whores.

Meade said...

"I could only suggest that the family consult with an elder law attorney who is experienced in dealing with..."

Plus one suggestion from an amoral pious narcissistic failed tv reality show star who had to take his blog private so as not to embarass his tv business associates. Buffoonery beyond belief.

Trooper York said...

This show really shows that. The interesting thing is they show how the founder of the firm always favors his son even though he is a gigantic screw up. It also shows how venal lawyers are when they take cases that should be beyond the pale for most decent people.

In one episode the firm wants to get the business from this coal mine so they go around paying off all the people in a small town to get medical waivers so they won't sue when they get cancer.

It just really shows you what lawyers are really like in real life.

Trooper York said...

On the other hand the lawyers at the legal clinic are muddle headed leftist who screw up family after family.

It is surprisingly honest for a mainstream prime time soap.

ndspinelli said...

Folks, Regarding the toxic duo, please remember Frank Costanza, "SERENITY NOW..SERENITY NOW." You'll maybe laugh a bit and just ignore the drivel.

Shouting Thomas said...

What you have to remember about really ambitious lawyers (most of them, at least) is that they are the worlds most dutiful and compulsively driven school children.

To make it in the elite law firms, you've got graduate in the #1 or #2 slot in your high school class, graduate in the top 5% of Harvard, Yale, Chicago or Stanford, then work 20 hour days for 7 years to make partner.

This leaves very little room for any personal development.

Trooper York said...

Another interesting thing about the show is that something bad happens to every character. I mean unremittingly bad. One gets murder by a client of the legal clinic. Another gets Lou Gehrig's disease. Another gets Aids. The female lead gets knocked up by the Mentalist guy but finds out she is having a Downs syndrome Baby on a night she finds out that he was out banging some other chick. It is just one bad thing after another.

Shouting Thomas said...

And, Trooper, a con artist can't con a person who doesn't want to be conned.

Trooper York said...

Somehow it makes becoming a lawyer seem even worse than you can imagine it to be.

The same dude that did this show is doing the new Headless Horseman show which looks like it will be really cool.

Trooper York said...

My cousin literally ran away to join the circus. He was a roustabout on a carney that traveled through the South for about five years. He filled us all in on a lot of these scams. Plus I saw many of them pulled on the old people who owned brownstones here in Brooklyn when their kids hated them and moved away. So it is all too familiar. I think it is best to look away.

From a 2011 interview with Jill Greenberg:

Interviewer: You’ve experienced some high-profile controversies with your Crying Children series (Greenberg was publicly criticized for taking candy away from some of the young subjects to make them cry for the portraits) and John McCain images (Greenberg posted digitally altered images of the Republican presidential candidate on her site after photographing him for The Atlantic). Do you think those controversies hurt or help your brand?

Greenberg: When controversy creates a lot of press it can be good, but it can be bad too. The crying kids thing came and went. With McCain, I think I sort of forgot there are actually Republican people working in the entertainment or advertising world. I think people took it the wrong way, but a lot of clients loved it. They credit me with Obama winning. Whatever works.

See, Greenberg loses no sleep over the kids, or anything else. Whatever works, that’s the ticket. Sort of makes a nice companion piece with Hillary’s “at this point, what difference does it make.”

Also love that “I sort of forgot there are actually Republican people working in the entertainment or advertising world.”

Shouting Thomas said...

A Republican, in the terms of that world, is anybody who isn't a Democrat, or who doesn't toe the line on any issue that can be shouted down with the "bigot" shit. (What issues aren't bigot issues these days?)

In Woodstock, it is common when musicians and artist meet for one or both to subject the other to a political litmus test through what appears to be casual conversation.

I don't care because there really isn't any money to be made in Woodstock. So, I just tell the testers straight out to shove it, or if I'm in a good mood, I'll just say that I won't talk politics.

Shouting Thomas said...

Since the purported Republican enemy is thought to be demonically possessed, any kind of vicious, deceptive and corrupt behavior is justified.

After all, it's your moral duty to destroy the bigots.

Leisure Suit Larry is only here to disrupt it...

Well said. Laurence isn't worth noticing let alone responding to ... let him howl down an empty corridor.

Trooper York's "grifter" behavior description is on the money as far as Laurence is concerned. I no longer have a clue of what Ann's all about and don't care anymore than she does about me. I have some experience dealing with grifters where I live in fact. The have no leverage if you pay them little mind and just watch them without joining them in a verbal fray. In short, you have to watch them or they will wreck your shit or steal it...no need to converse.

I know I am going to try to not mention TOP again, unless it is linked to with intelligent commentary by a contributor or another commenter. Even then I might just skip it.

Perhaps. But they can use distraction and dissembling to set a trap that catches decent but unwary people. The love to provoke so that they don't have to perform. They can and have caused good people to go to jail, just for the attention it got them.

Shouting Thomas said...

My mood swings seem to be generally related to how well I do at guitar tuning on any particular day.

Guitar tuning is a surprising intricate job. A lot of guys like the mechanical tuners, and I use them, particularly when I'm working with a loud band because you can't hear yourself on stage with all that noise going on.

You really have to do it by ear to do it right.

When guitar tuning goes well, rehearsal goes well, and I'm in a good mood.

I also suggest certain strains of 420!

Shouting - Did you know Levon Helm, late of Woodstock?

Michael Haz said...

Trooper, at least your cousin wasn't Italian.

Shouting Thomas said...

Worked with The Band and did opening acts for them.

I was much closer to Rick Danko than to Levon.

I've played Levon's CD Dirt Farmer more times than I can count. Wish I'd gotten to Woodstock for a Midnight Ramble before Levon passed.

Midnight Ramble is still going on.

Are yours? I get that you find it funny, like a little girl, to come back whenever you hear the dog whistle of your google alerts popping off, but don't you tired of the envy and jealousy you so badly hide under the exterior of your posts? Oh, you don't have to project them, but they can clearly be seen. I suppose you are like those people who think they are clever by half and that you know something no one else knows, but you know what? You don't.
