I first heard these guys at my very first job in Madison. There was a submarine sandwich shop out of Milwaukee called Suburpia on University Ave. The manager used to play this album on a cassette loop. That was perfect music for making sandwiches on demand.

Excellent selection. Heavy weather indeed. Birdland is an amazing tune - Zawinul was a favorite of mine from his time with Cannonball Adderley - remarkable player. But then there is Jaco Pastorius - he was a freak of nature when it came to playing music, but in the rest of his life he was just a freak. Poor crazy bastard. I sometimes wonder about the fine line between being a creative genius and going completely stark raving mad. He definitely crossed that line, and more's the pity. But what a musical legacy he left behind. Bass players down unto the latest day try to emulate what he accomplished. And to think he did that 40 years ago. I run out of superlatives to describe his musical ability.
50 years ago this summer, you were living it up in at Woodstock; 40 years ago this summer, I was breaking away in Italy for the summer, spending some of that money I earned in that sandwich shoppe. The whole trip cost me about $850 including airfare.
I bring it up because I have a vivid recollection of hearing Weather Report's "In Pursuit Of The Woman In The Feathered Hat;" Someone was playing it on a portable cassette at the Florence train station. Years later, I went back to that train station with my girlfriend (now wife). I couldn't believe where I had slept: behind some low bushes but otherwise out in the open. What a vagrant!
Lots of 50th anniversary things coming up - starting this week. It's been a tumultuous half century, to say the least.
I used to stay at the Hotel Arizona in Florence. It was right down the street from the Hotel California, which I avoided. Hey, I heard that song, okay?
My bride has her 50th high school anniversary next weekend.
I am 10 years behind your coolness, Sixty.
WR was some good, far out, stuff back then. One of my musician friends players it for me and I thought, WTF is this? It ain’t Chuck Berry.
