Ed, look at the cute dog by the Abbot...so sweet the Abbot wanted him in the portrait.

As students of art know, dogs are not in portraits due to sweetness nor because some church guy wanted him there, dogs are there because they represent loyalty, watchfulness, and trustworthiness.

Symbolism, baby.
