What is socially accepted when you are beautiful but not accepted when you are ugly?

Assuming people want to interact with you

Saying you're ugly. If you're actually ugly you just end up making everyone uncomfortable. If you're beautiful people tend to fall all over themselves trying to reassure you that you're beautiful.

Bothering people who are reading. After years of sitting in coffee shops reading, I realized I was curt with anyone who tried to engage me in conversation, unless they were an attractive girl.

Being a criminal sometimes!
I remember when that 'beautiful convict' guy was floating around the internet for a while.

Going on about how inner beauty is more important than outer beauty. If you're attractive and say this you're humble and empowering, but if you're ugly and say it, you're just seen as whining.

Bad at your job.

This super hot girl farted once in my high school class. People thought it was hilarious and some of the football players hugged her and thought it was awesome. Later that year in English Class an overweight girl let a ripper go and was mocked and ridiculed and was told she was disgusting.

Being a female rapist. Remember that really hot blonde teacher that had sex with her student. All I felt was envy - extreme envy. If she was a Rosie O'Donnell, I'd want her locked up.

Actually that's a situation where beauty doesn't play a role. Child sex abusers who are female generally get a lighter sentence because of social presumptions. If they're pretty it's presumed that it couldn't have been that awful (from the child's perspective - ugh) and if they're ugly then the presumption seems to be they're pitiful and have been punished enough already by the universe.

Being an idiot is more socially acceptable if you're beautiful. It's already presumed.
Being an ugly idiot means you are destined for politics because no one else will have you.

I think the word naked covers it.

If you're ugly don't even try and engage the good looking girl at work.

"Beauty is truth, truth beauty, that is all we know on earth, that is all we need to know."

The last lines in Ode to a Grecian urn. The nuns made me memorize Keat's poem in high school.

Why is so difficult for some to understand/accept that life is unfair?

Then you die.

Life's unfair!!!

I see spinelli beat me to it. Oh well.

At The Gallery

The beautiful ones roam from room to room
Looking at ugly objects
Hatched by men determined to be insects
And Keats' ascension deny.

Keats' assertion would have been better.

Truth is beautiful and good. Beauty is good and truthful. Goodness is true and beautiful. It's a troika going on there, a triune unity if you like, an ancient formulation.

The question posed on Reddit is what can beautiful people get away with that ugly people cannot, while impressions of physical beauty are fungible and instantly so. Let's have an example. Susan Boyle of Britain's Got Talent fame is assessed as physically ugly by the worldwide audience, then she sings like an angel, and the audience adjusts their conceptualization of beauty to allow the discrepancy and to chide their myopic expectations, on the spot, to include her type of physical form. In concert the hearts of the audience become sympathetic. And that is truth beauty and goodness manifested, a real sight to behold.

While even beautiful people cannot get away with singing poorly.

Susan Boyle may be an example of something I've noticed about how voices can impact perception about attractiveness. More than once I've seen a drop dead gorgeous person open their mouth and this flat nasal drone voice comes out. And unless you are trying to get into the person's pants- you just drop all interest in them.

Same in reverse- You see some person at a bar or party with a crowd around them. You can see that they have a funny looking head, and weird nose, and their eye brows look like a caterpillar. Not attractive at all. But you get in closer and you hear them finishing some funny story. And that voice! Its Cleopatra, Garbo!, Churchill, or Cary Grant. Just a fascinating person that you suddenly find handsome or beautiful because of how they sound.
