It's amazing how in the last 20 years people have gleefully accepted technology that we/they all know has the potential to spy on them. That they are oblivious to the fact that developers could easily embed software or hardware to do that very thing. They've done it happily and joyfully because shiny.

They've also happily chosen to offshore the production of the shiny devices, saying in effect: "I want the finished shiny product, but I don't want anything to do with the making of the devices." Because NIMBY.
I have them all over the house. If the CIA starts coming to my house; then we will already be a full blown communist country undergoing a purge. In the meantime; I've found the system very useful; and I think I even purchased them off Lem's Amazon portal. Besides, if you have a smartphone; they can get far more information from it than a device that just sits there.
