Whose that Author?

Up to a point a man's life is shaped by environment, heredity, and movements and changes in the world about him; then there comes a time when it lies within his grasp to shape the clay of his life into the sort of thing he wishes to be. Only the weak blame parents, their race, their times, lack of good fortune, or the quirks of fate. Everyone has it within his power to say, this I am today, that I shall be tomorrow. The wish, however, must be implemented by deeds.

Very American sentiment. It's bad enough to fail in America but the shame, the shame. The Brits are much more accepting that an ordinary bloke's just a bloke and that alright, Jack.

Okay, I'm guessing Jack London. Fallback guess, Teddy Roosevelt.

Was he the son of a wanted man? Did he ever travel down the Cherokee Trail?

L'amore the merrier, quoth someone or other.

Hey Sixty, did you really know that or did you read through brainy quotes to get it? If you really knew it without searching that's sump'n.

Mr. Pic, I got tired of this thread dragging on so I used my Bing-fu and bam, there it was.

I have never read anything by Louis, but I used to work with a guy who did. However, I can't find the source for the quote "Amore, amore the merrier" or however it goes.

Well, cheater, knock it the hell off. Some of us have nothing better to do. Go grind a bowl.

lol I wanted to say L'Amour, but it was just an easy guess.

Looking for you, you were looking for me
Always reaching for you, you were too blind to see
Oh love of my heart why leave me alone?
I'm falling apart, no good on my own
Oh l'amour
Broke my heart and now I'm aching for you
Mon amour
What's a boy in love supposed to do?

That there be Elmer Rodgers. Great great grandfather to Aaron Rodgers (Packer QB), who could shoot and play the drums at the same time. It's in the blood line to be good at everything they do.

In certain limited areas, I have achieved a certain, limited amount of success. This has been a result of character and fortitude. In other, perhaps broader areas of life, I have been a flop. This has been a result of my environment, false friends, and global warming.

I read one book by L'Amore, a later novel about the Anasazi, which I enjoyed greatly. I'm a sucker for novels that teach me something and send me into history books seeking out the real story. Then I read his Education of a Wandering Man and was totally charmed. He was man who always had a book with him. Haven't read anything else by him, but Mom, in her dementia, has worn out two of his Sackett novels in what I term comfort reading. I had a major twinge of guilt when I trashed one, even knowing she wouldn't remember it.

The Sackett novels are classics of the genre. Especially "The Day Breakers."

One of my personal favorites is "Bendigo Shafter."

It is great genre fiction. When I was a kid I bought every single one of his books as soon as they came out.

Good times.
