I thought the terrible Tom Hanks/Bruce Willis movie was better than the book Bonfire of the Vanities, written by my close personal friend Tom Wolfe, mainly because in the movie the tape recording was used to save our hero, master of the universe, Sherman McCoy.

But that is the only reason - in reality, the movie sucked and the book was prescient. Sherman ran over a thug, who was immediately transformed into a choirboy, honor student and had he only the opportunity to live, world class brain surgeon. Wolfe was on to something, and as usual, his predictive skills were right on the money.

But I could relate to being saved by a tape recording. For whatever reason, Tom, I call him Tom, you know, being a skilled writer and all, chose to allow Sherman to go to prison rather than being exonerated by the tape. Maybe he knows more about writing or something. Nah...

I'm currently reading the book, War Dogs. You have probably seen trailers for the movie version. It is about 3 Orthodox Jew kids, stoners, from Miami who become gun runners. They desperately want to become wealthy which certainly plays to the stereotype. The leader of the pack is only 20 years old when he starts bidding on Pentagon contracts. The book is pretty good. I bet it's going to be better than the movie. The trailers make it look like a comedy.

GWTW is better as a movie. So was to Kill a mockingbird and the Godfather.

Usually, the better the book the worse the movie.

There is currently a big controversy regarding Good Reads. It seems that SJW are loading up reviews to attack their perceived enemies. False and nasty reviews are a big problem in the book world. It happens in Good Reads. It is especially bad in Amazon. So you need to take some of the more vitriolic reviews with a grain of sale.

The good news is that with the advent of ebooks you are not risking that much in buying a book for your kindle. So I think it is a lot less of a problem to buy something that turns out to suck.

These nasty false reviews do come from both sides of the culture wars. The Hugos are being voted on now so the Rabid Puppies, Sad Puppies and the opposition are all slinging mud around pretty good. At least in the Sci Fi community.

rcocean, I never read GWTW. I agree on The Godfather. To Kill a Mockingbird I give a push. Both the book and flick equally great. I recently read Go Tell a Watchman. That was a gut shut to liberals. There won't be any movies on that book unless Aaron Sorkin is hired and guts it and spins it liberal.

Harper Lee's writing career was extremely odd. People suspect that her childhood friend Truman Capote helped her out - big time - on "To Kill a Mockingbird".
