meaning of Kissed by a Rose

But did you know that when it snows my eyes become large and the light that you shine can be seen?

This must be one of the best lines in songdom. It seems to mean two things at once because of the contradiction. When it's actually snowing it's gray outside, but then after it snows a person's pupils contract autonomically to protect their eyeballs from snow-blindness, but when it snows as a person doing cocaine then their pupils dilate even if it's bright outside. Love is poetic light. The poet's eyes widen and love light is seen by a widening of emotional perception. The song is about cocaine and about love for a woman at the same time. During a cocaine buzz the poet landed on a parallel.

I'm trying to understand what this song is saying so I ask, [kissed by a rose, meaning] This song facts page explains the song in industry terms and leaves you hanging as to meaning, while the exceedingly lengthy comments explain the meaning of the song.

I did not realize how much this song means to people. Their comments are all lengthy and well-considered. There are some really smart people out there. They thought about this a great deal and give the explanation their best effort.
Coke users know about "bindles" (a 3"x3" piece of magazine paper folded in a certain way to "unfold" ("bloom") and reveal the coke inside. His new girl he loves probably cut her bindles out of "fashion magazines" and one day, he opened a bindle that showed a rose on it, which hit his emotions when he saw the parallels and symbolism about what their love really was".
So when he sings the "now that your rose is in bloom" (opening the rose photo on the bindle to reveal the coke) then a "light hits the gloom on the grey." Seal is literally saying "when you opened this bindle, a light came and took my gloom away, but it was a ROSE on the bindle -- that meant he had TWO symbolic roses to choose from - the rose on the bindle of coke, or the rose that represents her TRUE LOVE he thinks is blooming, just like when the rose bindle "bloomed".)
When he uses the word "grey", he's talking about his mood. Winston Churchill (and other prominent people) back in the 19th and 20th centuries used to talk about their depression as being "the black days". Others refer to "grey" the same way, where their mood or depression isn't debilitating, but it's unpleasant.)
Google images [bindle cocaine] Oh, those things.

Psych! Seed package. He could have said origami envelope. And all that is just 1/4 of his answer. And they all answer this way.

Except.
if you think this is about drugs you're pretty much a dumbass. mary has the exact meaning IMO
There. I'm a dumbass. Mary:
"there used to be a greying tower alone by the sea"---means he used to be lonely and unhappy, had given up hope
"you became the light on the dark side of me"---means she has brought happiness to his sadness and misery
"love remains a drug thats the high not the pill"--means that the love she has given him brings a high> When people are in love it releases chemicals in the brain that are similar to a high someone would get from drugs, but it has nothing to do with drugs, remember the song by Huey Lewis called "i want a new drug" referring to love not drugs.
"but did you know that when it snows my eyes become large and the light that you shine cant be seen"---means--it is figuratively snowing, sad weather because she is not there, it is a time of darkness for him, when there is less light the pupils become large, less light meaning less happiness, and that happiness she brings him is gone because shes not there, when shes gone no light (happiness) is in his life
"baby i compare you to a kiss from a rose on the grey" means--- he is comparing the kiss (a kiss is an expression of love and she is the love in his life, the rose refers to her (a rose is beautiful, she is the rose--on the grey is referring to the the love she has brought to his sadness and misery (the grey is a color that denotes gloom)
"ooh the more i get of you stranger it feels" he has been lonely for so long that the emotion of love feels unfamiliar to him
"now that your rose is in bloom, a light hits the gloom on the grey"----means now that she has opened her heart to him, he is happy now, thus she has brought happiness to his gloom. when a flower is in bloom it opens and its beauty is revealed.
"there is so much a man can tell you so much he can say"----refers to the fact that even when men are in love it is hard to reveal their feelings to their woman.
"you remain my power,my pleasure my pain" meaning she evokes every emotion in him,she means everything to him-- all emotions she brings to him are strength (power), pleasure (happiness) pain (sadness)
"baby to me your like a growing addiction that i cant deny, wont you tell me is that healthy baby"
He is falling more and more in love with her every day. He's becoming addicted to her, kind of to the point that its not a healthy relationship when one focuses too much on the other it may become almost like an obsession. he's hooked on her and its hard to give her up. Just like a drug addict needs more and more drugs to achieve their satisfaction.
Mary thinks that when it snows and his eyes grow the light that she shines cannot be seen. No, Seal printed the lyrics. When it snows the light that she shines can be seen. The other interpretation is better. His girlfriend does cocaine too and he needs her to say that it's their their love that is growing so similar to addiction and not the cocaine they do together and not just growing co-dependency.

Songwriters are always writing about drugs and relationships. This song is one such.

In ASL, the sign for "gloom" goes right into the sign for "gray." It's a very nice combination of light hitting the edge of gloom and the gray. And oddly, the sign for "gray" is the same configuration and movement and idea as the sign for "anyway."

All I knew was it was the theme for "Batman forever".

The meaning of "Kissed by a Rose" reminds me of "rosebud" in Citizen Kane. They are probably quite related, in fact.

Why do people hate that Batman? Why do they say the director ruined Batman forever? I did hear that one extreme Batman fan determined to rehabilitate batman from the campy television series depiction, but I never understood animosity to any of them, even the one with Robin. I like them all. They're all wonderful.

The info site says this song was supposed to be used for a romance scene but the director moved it to closing credits and that is where American audience was exposed and that is where it became really famous. Up until then, a shaky existence. Now that I'm looking at it I'm starting to really dig this song a lot.

I bet you $100.00 right now the kids already well interpreted this. Let's see. [kissed from a rose, asl] 1,2,3, okay, you don't owe me $100.00 because we didn't shake, but there ya go, 3 right off the bat. Let's see how well they did.

1 eh. My critique as a mature adult for all the eager children out there. She didn't show me the song in pictures. She is not thinking cinematographically, rather, she's thinking, "how do I transcribe these words?" And that shows a different picture. Consider the song a wall painting, she is describing an entirely different wall, a wall spelled out in Old English. There are serifs and antiquities all over the place. And no picture of what is happening. She doesn't know how to act out. She won't let herself act out. Too much spelling. I never saw a tower, I saw precipitation but not WHITE snow. For this song we must see a signal for WHITE but it's not there. Her doing this song in sign is like us hearing the lyrics rewritten by Chaucer.

2. Too much introductory spelling but well adept. I need to see a TOWER, a light house, not "dark established" See? I'm cross already. Very nice. But the same problem with "snow." We really do need to see white, not rain, not precipitation.

It's key to the song, this white powder. It must be emphasized in the picture, don't you think? When it SNOWS the eyes grow WIDE that's what must be depicted graphically for the essential point to convey.

Otherwise this girl is very good. I don't recognize her "Baby" and her "Rose" is SEE (seeing essential english) and we don't care about English anymore we're in Songland. She uses an "R" for the "flower" sign, that's very English-y to specify rose among all blooming flowers. While her "gloom" is actually "plant growing" they all do this, where pantomime is available for the genuine sign for "flower" and "rose."

I'm saying, It could be all very graphic and based on the word "flower" available for blooming right there at the nose (instead of shifting everything for "grow") and the open hand of a bloomed flower is available for the open hands for "gray." But they all use a different "gray." The signals connect beautifully when they allow. The hand configurations for all these signs go together very well and so far the interpreters do not take advantage of the opportunities to doff English and take up pantomime using the forms of these signs.

Too bad. Because their renditions are not graphic.

3) male. hard of hearing.unnecessary intro spelling. Best one. Same SEE "rose" with "r" no "white" in the snow. "Baby" is "matched together" The most graphic of all. The least English. Authentic.

Win #3. *shakes hand vigorously, gives trophy* In pantomime.

I'll cut his hair for free. I can do it. I totally practiced up on my Belgians.

In this language it's possible to have the rose shown clearly at the nose and bloom right there and clearly straightforwardly placed on the signal for "gray mood" but none do that and so the picture available is never made clear.

They'd be terrible mural painters.

They would. I can tell. The last one is best.

Seal was embarrassed by this song so he threw the tape in a cornor Seal did not present it to producer Trevor Horn until the recording sessions for Seal II.
Now that we get some actual facts and not any fantasy because of a persons own attachment to the song and maybe some past love you had that you made this your song and now theres a possiblity its All about Cocaine.

Seal was asked about the lyrics years later, well 25 years+ and he said
“I have avoided explaining these lyrics for over 25 years. I am not going to start doing it now"

He also said things like
“To be honest, I was never really that proud of it, though"
“I threw the tape in the corner. I was embarrassed by it so I wouldn’t play it for my producer, Trevor Horn"
“I wrote it about three years before I was even signed, before I had a deal. It is really old. The song started off as an experiment. When I was just starting out, I was living in a squat"

These 3 lines tell you everything if you want to hear it.
It was a Love for Cocaine or some other Drug like Methamphetamine(Flowers) or Amphetamine(Roses)

The dark part of your eye is called the pupil. Pupils can grow or shrink according to different lighting conditions.

Now with all the facts and side effects of the pupils LOL, i will come to my conclusion that Mr. Seal was in fact doing Speed and probably Cocaine too.
Speed powder can range in colour from white to brown and may contain traces of grey or pink.
When he opened up that package all the colors came at him which is the Jones as he stared at the Roses probably a Pink Rose and shades of grey.
This is why the word Pill is used in this song!

This is why he was Embarrassed by it and till this day will not explain the meaning of the words. If it was a Love Song about a woman he would have easily shared the meaning. For years people thought of it as a love song for a woman which made him more embarrassed about his past which addiction does that.

So, if you like the song you can still enjoy it and pretend you never read this. Just love it for whatever reason you want. But i will bet on this explanation. Its too bad that guy who started all this did so.

Heres the finale!
Seal has never explained what the song is about, offering only that there was "some kind of relationship that inspired the lyrics."

Some King Of Relationship is no Human Interaction. Take Care! And say NO TO DRUGS!
