Regarding my souring on soccer, I may have spoken too soon. (Well, my, that's certainly never happened before!) We watched Australia vs. Netherlands, yesterday, and it was a really good game. Glad to have had the opportunity.
We watched Spain vs. Chile but it wasn't my cup of tea, although I can certainly see why the Chileans would have been into it.
Anyway, I'm working on a theory. I was wondering why the athletes in more recent matches seem not to be playing as "dirty" as in the first match we watched.
I now think that the style of the play is unchanged. It's just that they're not showing it on television as much as before. My reaction to the boyfight stuff was pretty negative and I'm guessing that's a very American way of looking at things.
Unaccustomed to the culture of the sport, we want to see the athletes play by the rules, which we construe broadly (in our ignorance) as "fighting fair."
The Golden Rule and all that.
We don't want our kids to see that kind of stuff on TV and start acting like that themselves. The powers-that-be figured that out real fast and cleaned things up to accommodate American tastes.

Just a theory.
Interesting theory. More interesting that soccer, actually.
Going through the channels I'm annoyed at hitting soccer, soccer, soccer. Excuse me, I meant, footie *click * footie *click* footie *click* ah cartoons good.
