Bento
Bento...is a single-portion takeout or home-packed meal common in Japanese cuisine. A traditional bento holds rice, fish or meat, with pickled or cooked vegetables, usually in a box-shaped container. Containers range from disposable mass produced to hand crafted lacquerware.

What fun, a bento box quilt:

Love the quilt. But it makes me feel dizzy if I look at it too long :).
Yes, Lydia, it's one of those that are perfectly squared off, but the juxtaposition of light and dark fabrics fool the eye into seeing unevenness, or something.
So I take it there's no compartment in a bento box for Bavarian cream pie?
That sounds more like a Benito box.
Ricpic, of course there is. This is free-form. 'Course, it might be only an inch square :)
(I'd never do that to you; 4x4 or nothing.)
Do you detect a Mexican influence, Sixty?
Not on that axis.
Musssolini.
When in Japan I ate many meals from bento boxes - it's an inexpensive way to dine and I really like Japanese food, so win-win, iero kyabu!
We got a couple of these for our wedding.
Not quite as decorative, but more travel proof.
Those are great, Paddy. Have you used them yet?
The variety available is neat (wiki images).
Iero kyabu? Translation please :)
Were you there long?
Deborah, I've used them, but not nearly as much as I should given the cost. I've not had the need, as I've lived close to work or worked from home for a while. But the times we did, like for camping, they worked really well.
I really want to start using them again, but I think it takes a system of preparation. I need to make a bunch of rice and just dish out the various items. I don't plan ahead. But, it's really worth it for having a great meal in an easily stored way. All microwaveable.
Don't forget to make some cute creations for your daughter :)
