That's not funny!

Male brains above, female brains below.

"By analyzing the MRIs of 949 people aged 8 to 22, scientists at the University of
Pennsylvania found that male brains have more connections within each hemisphere, while female brains are more interconnected between hemispheres.

...By analyzing the subjects’ MRIs using diffusion imaging, the scientists explored the brains’ fiber pathways, the bundles of axons that act as highways routing information from one part of the mind to the other. After grouping the image by sex and inspecting the differences between the two aggregate “male” and “female” pictures, the researchers found that in men, fiber pathways run back and forth within each hemisphere, while in women they tend to zig-zag between the left, or “logical,” and right, or “creative,” sides of the brain."

Conclusions?

What about feelings, observations and thoughts before conclusions?

I'm curious about the two blue dots in the front the men seemed to miss hitting. Maybe one is the "adorable" button. There's also a cluster of red dots in the back of the brain the women didn't appear to tag.

I just love the differences. I really don't get why anyone wants us to be more the same. Just thinking about how different women's brains are gets me horny. I'm gonna print out that brain graphic, the one with the men on top.

I think the two dots in the front that the men don't connect to would be fashionable shoes, and the two in the back that women don't hook into must be lawn mowers and sling shots.

Conclusion:

Longitude is different than latitude which are both different than attitude.

Maybe men can focus better, women are better at multi-tasking and social (multi-stimulus) situations.

I double-dog dare you.

Are you sure?

I have come to see over the years that men compartmentalize exceedingly well. Are women better at multi-tasking, or do they accept societal expectaions?

Brain, brain, brain & brain! What is brain!

chickelit said...

Are you sure?

Yes. Longitudes extend from pole to pole; latitudes are broad and encircle the earth. Those are two measures of geometry. Attitudes are just opinions.

The sexes are wired differently? Or something. Who knew...

Now I feel all compartmentalizing.

We men also appear to be wired more to the more basal brain stem-like functions. Who knew...

That was the question in my head when I wrote the comment. Somewhere (Brain Games?) I saw a study how people in general are much worse at multi-tasking than they think they are.

I'm horrible at multi-tasking.

I could see an evolutionary need for women to multi-task in the context of child-care, being attentive to multiple needs and environmental concerns at the same time.

Then again, how much of those scans are pure genetic/gender and how much are those reflecting societal expectations and thus the brain has actually adapted to the expected roles?

Karen of Texas said...

Chick: Indeed. ;) That may also explain part of why those blue frontal cortex dots in the peace 25ish male aren't pinged yet...

*pre not peace. Sheesh.

Conclusions?

Men and women are two distinct and symbiotic creatures.

Feminists are insane to try to equate the two and create an equal outcome of events since men and women are obviously not equal in the interchangeable sense.

Men excel in areas that women don't and vice versa.

This is a good thing.

ricpic said...

If your wiring is haywired you're constantly startled by your own behavior. "Did I say that? Did I do that?" is the female plaint par excellance. Joyce Cary wrote a whole book about it, Herself Surprised. This is the age in which the physiological basis has finally been revealed. Not that anything will change.

Sexist bastard!

LOL YH.

Yes, I can see the need for mother-child nurture-and-language promotion. As far as a group of men hunting together, that would have also necessitated some communication, however brief.

But I suppose it boiled down to man protecting and providing for family.

As DBQ implies, viva la difference!

deborah said...

Ricpic, did you read the book? If so, what did you think of it?

ricpic said...

Great great book. Joyce Cary is a marvel. And not old school or hidebound. Just realistic. Herself Surprised is really about what we would call an earth mother. Lots of love in it for her but she's maddening as well. So what else is new? ;^)

Multi tasking has been proven to be a myth. I always knew it. I called it "Doing 2 things half assed" and women hated me for say the truth. Studies has proven the female myth horseshit.

The biggest problem w/ feminism is it denies science. Men are anthropologically better @ focusing from our hunting days. We are also more spatial for that reason. Women has superior olfactory senses. That goes back to being able to smell if a potential mate was family to prevent inbreeding. Unfortunately for Sixty, the folks in the Carolinas have deviated septums.

Thanks, ricpic, it's part of a trilogy, I see:

Joyce Cary wrote two trilogies, or triptychs as he later preferred to call them. The first comprises: Herself Surprised, To Be a Pilgrim and The Horse's Mouth. The trilogy (or triptych) is designed to show three characters, not only in themselves, but as seen by each other. Each of the novels is seen through the eyes of a different character, so that each part is complete in itself. This is the story of Sara. She sees herself as the victim of mysterious events and her own soft heart, whereas to Wilcher (the protagonist of To Be a Pilgrim) she is the devoted and unselfish servant and mistress, and to Gully Jimon (The Horse's Mouth) a vain, self-deceiving man-catcher. 'There seems to me more truth of human nature, a profounder understanding of the springs of action in Herself Surprised, than in any novel I have read for long time.' L. P. Hartley

I will definitely look into them...thanks!

Nick, I think multi-tasking is one of those new BS but if in pre-historic times women nurtured kids, gathered berries, made the food, ie, shifted focus throughout the day, men would also have done plenty of multi-tasking; hunting, making spears, honing spear tips, carrying heavy loads, etc.

I'm thinking the more numerous connections between the brain halves prevalent in women would have been mainly from child-rearing...communication and attachment.

ricpic said...

Deb, if you want to get a flavor of the trilogy you can watch The Horse's Mouth, the film that was made of that part of the trilogy, on youtube. Just enter The Horse's Mouth 1958. Of course it's different than the book but you'll get the gist. There are some scenes with Sara.

Nick, I heard that whole nose thing with women was visual so that they could size up the Irish at a glance.

If Trooper were here he'd say that was racist.

BTW, this was a great post, deborah.

ndspinelli said...

Deborah, Research has proven, you are not doing 2 things @ once. Your brain is stopping and starting in milliseconds, akin to antilock brakes. The result is an inferior result on all the tasks.

ndspinelli said...

And, yes..this is a GREAT POST.

deborah said...

Ricpic, thanks for the tip, but I'd rather read first...the preview on the first book looks great.

Nick, I agree, but nothing much is lost if you're folding towels while watching TV :)

Chick and Nick, thanks!

Conclusion is that males can appreciate logic and creativity for what they are, while women too often get confused by wanting to combine these two very different things.

deborah said...

Tell that to a programmer, you big silly.

ndspinelli said...

Ritmo, There is the key. Women "wanting" and "feeling." Men feel to little and women feel WAY too much.
