Once I saw a Bloggingheads with Jonah and Peter Beinhart, both Jews, and they were discussing that although Jews don't tend to keep dogs as pets, Jonah had one or two. And Jonah said something like, 'I don't know, I just love my dogs'
Did you watch the segment of the video right after the one you linked to?
Beinart really comes off like a putz. I mean, and I say this as a cat man, how can one wonder why mankind loves dogs & dogs love mankind? It is a primal relationship buried deep in the DNA of both species. We have literally evolved together.
I know that there are religious strictures in some faiths that make pet ownership problematic. I also understand that there are cultures that are too poor in meat products to support a "family" carnivore. But, once outside of those strictures, to not see the uniqueness of the man/dog relationship strikes me as social blindness of the worst sort. It makes one wonder: if Beinart can't see such social relationships in front of his face, how can he be trusted to see foreign social phenomena clearly?
I second April's recommendation that all read Krauthammer's essay about his dogs in his recently published book. To which suggestion I add: read the entire book. It reflects Krauthammer's brilliance.
But I think things like that can be extremely culturally fixed.
If Beinart was Orthodox, I'd give him a pass too, but he isn't & so I won't.
It's like the Jews who won't eat pork, but love shrimp & lobster. Sorry, guys. Tref is tref. Halakhic observances hang together or they don't. When picked & chosen at will, they just become a breeding ground for neurotic behavior.

Do dogs suffer from "brain freeze" too?
Inquiring minds want to know!
I suggest everyone read the passage about dogs in Charles Krauthammer's new book. You won't be sorry. It's fantastic.
Great vid. Go Coop.

YH, I saw this vid a long time ago, but I do recall Beinart's discomfort/distaste.
But I think things like that can be extremely culturally fixed. Arabs, another Semitic race, aren't permitted to touch dogs. I give Peter a pass :)

Great video. You can see "Cooper" getting frustrated but keeping his cool, finally when his turn comes. "Whomp".
On a serious note. I hope this is evidence that Goldberg will give up politics and confine himself to Pop Culture and Dog Videos.
Obviously this is a metaphor for the parties respective attitudes towards taxation.
Cooper is a Democrat.
