ESPN: "NFL to penalize use of racial slur"

"The head of the Fritz Pollard Alliance, which monitors diversity in the NFL, expects the league to institute a rule where players would be penalized 15 yards for using the N-word on the field."
John Wooten, the head of the Fritz Pollard Alliance, anticipates that the NFL's competition committee will enact the rule at the owners' meeting next month.

"We did talk about it, I'm sure that you saw near the end of the year that Fritz Pollard (Alliance) came out very strong with the message that the league needs to do something about the language on the field," said Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome, who is on the league's competition committee. "So we did discuss over the last three days." READ MORE

This is going to be a hoot.

Within a few years, football players will be required to wear tutus.

Yes, a lot of black players will get punished.

There's a long form article somewhere that brings up a previous incident between a player and referee. Both were African-Americans.

"We want this word to be policed from the parking lot to the equipment room to the locker room. Secretaries, PR people, whoever, we want it eliminated completely and want it policed everywhere."

Imagine if the word were "freedom."

(not that I'm equating the 2 but that's a heck of a Stasi-esque statement by Pollard)

@EMD

Yes, I read that statement this morning and thought...

Somebody, apparently born and bred in the U.S. of A, said that and thought it was a really smart thing to say! What in the fuck was he thinking?

Fifteen yards and loss of down on Lem for his sly insertion of a disturbing anti-Irish slur.

Maybe I was just hallucinating

I have a dream that one day all men will be judged by their 40 times, vertical leap and 225 pound bench press reps.

I think Jonathan Martin should be in charge of monitoring speech so there will be no nasty bullying.

So there should be a long list of words that must be banned. Including the "mf" word and "cs" word. Up to including cocky and pee pee.

This type of problem is even bigger on the pitches of enlightened Europe.

We must have the same standards and practices in the NFL that would be found in a girls tea party held at "The American Girl" store.

Furthermore I demand that we outlaw the "Slippery Slope" argument as that is racist and derogatory toward Asians. It also conjures up thoughts of a lubed up Margaret Cho and that is not a image that anyone should have in their head.

So, if i have this right, the NFLs 'civil rights' at the workplace will be ahead of elite Universities and Colleges. The irony.

Recent news articles suggest racial slurs are used 10,000 times a day on Twitter, with the most common slur being "white boy". Maybe just being white and on the field will now draw a taunting penalty?

The NFL has jumped the shark. It's headed toward NASCAR land now.

Fuck those overpaid inarticulate morons and their stupid sport.

Lem Vibe Bandit said...

Obama wont let his phantom, straw son play in the NFL, but, he would send them to an n-word using, black hating, elite University.

Rabel said...

Now, Sixty, let's gave credit where it's due. Unlike the NFL, NASCAR doesn't have a any N-word issues.

And I imagine Jeff Gordon has solved a few problems of his own with conversations.

Lem Vibe Bandit said...

... send him I mean.

How can a paleo institution, like the NFL, be ahead of the civil rights curve?

At first I thought this was just another episode of PC nonsense. Then I re-thought it and decided that it is a good idea. Why should people, kids especially, have it drilled into them that one just doesn't say nigger, and then hear athletes yelling it at each other all the time. The message is all wrong.

If it's a bad word, than it's a bad word for everyone. If it can't be yelled on the nightly news, for example, it shouldn't be yelled elsewhere on television, including sports games.

Known Unknown said...

and then hear athletes yelling it at each other all the time.

I doubt they have much exposure to this (outside of music, etc.)

You don't hear it much if at all on televised sports, even with players "mic'ed up"

What you are suggesting is that there only be one standard for civilized behavior. You must think of the rich cultural heritage of all who play that game. Polynesians, for example. Will the word "Haoli" be banned? What about "Hapa"? Suppose an announcer uses the phrase "Chinks in their armor"? Or "slant" play? And given the number of Muslims who play, what about "Kafir"? Did that big murderer from up north keep his locker "spic and span"? And what about Troop's "black heart"?

And why aren't some women offended when the pass is out "on the flat"?

The whole endeavor is offensive.

How many white players are saying nigger on the field? I am going to guess very few.

But hey, if this makes the NFL feel better about themselves, maybe they could take half of Roger Goodell's salary and donate it to some appropriate charity instead?

Are you kidding, those moms and their girls are friggin vicious at American Girl (especially when there is a limited sale).

Lem Vibe Bandit said...

You know... I'm going to go out on a limb on this, just this once. Call me crazy, but, wouldn't this seize to be a problem if you banned white players?

The problem is too many white players in the NFL ;)

Let's hope they keep the word 'douchenozzle' however, being that it describes an important piece of equipment.

Lem Vibe Bandit said...

What is to stop a player from whispering it incognito?

That's a daily double, Alex.

ndspinelli said...

Too bad Sonny Sixkiller never played for the Redskins.

Michael Haz said...

Banning the n-word will mean that players and coaches will have to double up on the f-word.

Rabel said...

The instant replay/official reviews could be interesting.

This opens the way for the PGA to prohibit the use of "threesome", "foursome", "hole", "putter", "stick", "driver", "fringe", "balls" and "down the fairway".

Lip reading ready jobs.

Lem Vibe Bandit said...

The N-word should have a different color than yellow.

Why should the yellow bear the n-word burden?

Not fare in my book.

@Michael Haz that's how I thought about it. I'm open to counter arguments but yours is the one to beat for my $.

So only racial slurs, and defined by whom? Will the refs carry a list of what is not acceptable? Will the term cracker merit a flag? And what about terms about one's sexuality (f@g), IQ (retard), or obesity (fat) - will those merit a flag? So ridiculous...

I think the article as written is actually pretty clear on which single word you can't say.
Reply · 14 · · Yesterday at 7:20am

Poor Jody. Can't count. There were two new taboos in the article. Didn't that go clang clang clang, when she read it? No. She didn't see the thin edge and the wedge.

They will provide a list of words not to be spoken, agreeing with the list is well beside the point, so then, provide a list of words that are permitted, a list of permissible words, not classes of permissible words, each word permitted as done here, I must insist because that is what is insisted here by insisting on what must not be spoken. What bullshit backward buttfuckery tyranny.

Coming from the community competition council or commission or something, a self-formed group probably who knows.

[Who does know? Yesterday I looked up the word "commission" in ASL so that I can distinguish it between similar "C"+ "group" - related words, class, congress, council, company, and the like, through various dictionaries and the first video showed "money" +"%" and that is not the "commission" I meant at all.]

Use of the word 'Nigger' banned in NFL.

Black Players hardest hit.

rcocean said...

Its hard for me to care about this. If the NFL players are OK with it, its Ok with me. Its their party.

This isn't like the NBA, where you can hear what a player yells 10 rows from courtside.

There is nothing that spells out freedom like speech codes.
