Here's a live cam that randomly changes view. There are also links to other mid-Atlantic beaches. Lately I've been wanting to go to the beach and just run and run and run.
Come on down. It's sunny and 70 today. Of course the water is only 60 degrees, but even that's warm compared to Martian summer which is warm compared to the Mid-west now.
Bago, I used to swim at the Oceanside beaches between the ages of about 6 and 9. I don't remember how cold the water felt, but I remember the water being pea green. And getting massive sunburns.
The main thing I like about it is that it is not Myrtle Beach - that place is a zoo.
I used to get in the water at Cherry Grove with my little boogie board and paddle across an inlet and end up very near the NC/SC border on a beach that was completely empty. That was nice. All the benefits of an east coast beach with none of the downside - other people on MY BEACH!!!
But seriously, I used to bicycle around Cherry Grove, got to know it pretty well and while it is like a lot of other beach towns, from Key West to Maine, it is still small enough to be pleasant. Not overly commercialized, plenty of trees, and still just a short drive to Brookgreen Gardens for those days when you would prefer some culture to a sunburn.
That is an awesome museum, if you ever get the chance - stop by. It does not disappoint.
deb -- Ocracoke reminds me of a New England village. Quite quaint. And out of the way. If you do get there take one of the NC ferries (you have to rake at least one -- the Hatteras one between the outer banks islands is free). We have come across from Cedar Island several times.
Also there is a British cemetery there where some sailors who were killed up by the German subs cruising off the outer banks during WW II are buried. Poignant.
sixty -- have just driven into Cherry Grove a couple times. Yeah it looked nice. We used to hang out up at Ocean Isle. Also non-commercial -- though they ended up with a Wings or whatever on the road into the bridge. :- P . You could be there 4th of July week and still have lots of room.
And yeah -- we liked it because it was NOT Myrtle Beach. ;-) Of course they are knocking down the little older beach houses right and left and building Beach Palaces ....
Last May daughter treated us to a week on the beach at Kitty Hawk. Going back again this year a little later. Hope the weather is a bit kinder, but still ... a week at the beach :-)
Thanks for the info, JAL. It's also interesting to look at Hatteras on Google earth. You can follow the shoreline, and see the campgrounds, names and all.

Haha ... the campgrounds!! We used to camp at Oregon Inlet when the kids were younger. Very younger.
We got there late on night and couldn't find a place, so ended up at the KOA. A hurricane had been lurking off the NC coast back then and decided in the night to turn in and come on shore. We had been on the road more than 9 hours and had no idea. By morning when we came to in the pouring rain we found the campground almost completely emptied out ...
We had to drive 2 hours inland to find a motel. Went back the next day after the storm passed. Camped at Oregon Inlet with a few stragglers and a bunch of sea gulls floating around on pools left inside the sand dunes.
Nowadays they throw everyone off the island (rightfully so) if there is any chance the hurricane will come ashore.
Some people stayed during the storm. The brick veneer on the end wall of a motel peeled off and demolished a lovely Volvo station wagon which someone had carefully tucked in next to it so it wouldn't get damaged.
I recall around '96(?) we had to leave Emerald Isle early because they were evacuating because of Hurricane Bertha.
Speaking of just showing up, I remember getting hotel info from the AAA guidebooks. Teeny print, you had to call long distance. The internet sure has made some things better :)
Okay, one last one, then this thread will scroll off the page:
Ron White: Some friends of mine asked me if I wanted to go to a strip club, and I didn't... want to. 'Cause, back me up on this, fellas: once you've seen one woman naked, you... wanna see the rest of 'em naked.
Ron White: I was sitting on a bean bag chair, naked, eating Cheetos the other day when Robert Tilton came on TV. He's a televangelist out of Dallas. He looked at me and said, "Are you lonely?" Yeah. "Have you spent half your life in bars pursuing sins of the flesh?" This guy's good! "Are you sitting in a bean bag chair naked eating Cheetos?"... Yes, sir! "Do you have the urge to get up and send me a thousand dollars?" Ha, ha close! I thought he was talking about me there for a second!

I prefer summer and water temperature of 85 degrees. Eighty four is too cold. Yeah, we are spoiled here in the east.
But North and South Carolina have nice beaches.
Took my sister from Santa Barbara to a NC beach one summer. ("Why would I want to go to a beach? I'm from California.")
We get there. "Oh, I see why you like to go to the beach."
We will go when it's 84 ;-)
But Cape Hatteras can be cold (and rough) in the summer.
Sticks out into the Atlantic.
According to the info below the picture the temp is 25 but feels like 15. That's too cold even for running!

Years ago I used to vacation at Kitty Hawk on the Outer Banks. I migrated south, finally decided that Cherry Grove SC was the beach for me.
JAL, I've never made it further south on the outer banks than Nags Head. Hope to see Hatteras and Ocracoke one day.
Sixty, my uncle and aunt used to take their kids to Myrtle Beach every summer. Always brought us back a box of taffy.
What do you like about Cherry Grove?

Thanks, I'll put it on my list.
My niece went to Key West for her honey moon and kept saying how much I would love it.

Funny what you remember.

We drove to Cherry Grove in August of '96 and I was amazed at the amount of damage that Bertha did to Wilmington.
Little did I know that in September hurricane Fran would hit our area even harder.
The woods around here are recovering but the damage is still evident, even after over 17 years. Don't mess wit no hurricane, just sayin'...
Ron White: "It's not that the wind is blowing, it's what the wind is blowing."
Macallans FTW!
I did go out during the peak of Hurricane Fran - went all Lt. Dan on it. It was astounding!
I love Ron White.
Go on, I'm listening.
(But Lt. Dan, you ain't got no legs.)
LOL!
Gump, I never did thank you for saving my life.
*splash*

Good-night, don't forget to tip your waitresses!
