Silk Road had been in operation since roughly January 2011, but was obscured from normal web traffic because it was hosted on something called the “Deep Web.”"

Yeah, but then, I read McArdle, who was dissing bitcoin before they raided Silk Road. I don't know what to think of the whole thing, it seems to be the dead-ender remnant of the old goldbug-crypto anarcho-libertarianism that was so popular among geeks circa 1995 or so.
