A reader of Althouse, identifying herself as Jane, wrote to Althouse about a new way the AP seems to be playing the same old song and dance. Well, the AP is playing the song so we dance to it.
"This must be in the AP stylebook somewhere, because that sentence, or some variation therof, is found in every single article about the case: Martin "is" black but Zimmerman only "identifies" as Hispanic. Can you recall any other situation in which AP has played with racial identification vs. race as a fact in the news story?"Althouse says...
"This is a great topic about which to maintain vigilance."At Lem's, topics like race, highly technical, that require a tremendous amount of dexterity and years and years of practice to be able to play and not, you know, get booed off the stage, not to mention drive your neighbors and family member crazy, are better left to the professionals.

Former American President George W. Bush and Barack Obama who also identifies as an "American President" both visited Africa recently. Bush who who is widely recognized for the work he has done to help the continent, was visiting at the same time as Obama who identifies as someone who helps there.
I'm pretty sure we're not going to see the media reporting that Obama is the first self-identifying black President whose father is Kenyan anytime soon.
Not in every single article. Which makes Zimmerman more special than the President, I guess. Maybe that's why the President sent out the goon squad to get him.
More here, as it is too long to post as a comment.
Actions speak louder than words, but are they louder than skin color? The case of Bush, Obama and Africa is a near perfect example.
17 year old kills man with punch to face
"Horrible news out of Utah late last night as a soccer referee has died after slipping into a coma following being punched in the face by a teenage player during a game played on Saturday April 27th.
Ricardo Portillo of Salt Lake City passed away at Intermountain Medical Center where he was being treated for a punch he received after whistling a 17 year old player for a foul and issuing him a yellow card. The player, who has not been named because of his age, reportedly threw a single punch at Portillo.
The punch caused Portillo to suffer swelling in his brain, landing him in critical condition. While no cause of death has been released, a planned autopsy is expected to confirm the punch as the proximate cause."
The ridiculous position being tried now, with the play for lesser charges, only after the evidence strongly suggested that it was TM who was the initial aggressor, is that Zimmerman can be convicted of child endangerment.
As if Zimmerman somehow could tell TM's age, at night, and that because Zimm should have known, that maybe Zimm should have decided to take a few more punches, maybe wait until he broke a bone or maybe bled more.
Its ridiculous.
They're hoping a war between Hispanics and blacks will put white Anglos on the Hispanic side, not only a great way of keeping people at each others' throats (rather than going after the Lefties), but it might also make AmnestyCare more palatable.
Actually, they love Dubya there because of all the work he did when POTUS to help stop the spread of AIDS.
Choom succeeded in making an ass of himself everywhere he went (and was greeted with protesters, as well).
The glaring blatant abuse of discretion here is that the judge has decided to allow the jury decide on charges the defense didn't get to defend?
How is that even considered.... unless it IS what we all fear.
A fucking political show trial.
Doesn't it seem a little unfair to change the charge being tried after the trial is over, especially if only one side want's to do that, and especially if it's the prosecution, and especially in an obvious show trial, and especially in 2013, and especially in America? It's all very special in an ugly kind of way.
If you are talking to me Ed, I'm hoping that there is justice for a man who is obviously not guilty of the charges that have been made-up against him.
The race, the Hispanic and the black and the whites is stuff that is being manipulated to find this man guilty of something he didn't do.
The reason why I'm interested doesn't go beyond the no mere understanding that if they are allowed to do it to Zimm tomorrow it could be anyone of us.
That's enough motivation to raise my eyebrows.
As I said over at Icepick...
The Zimmerman judge got to see how it turned out for Lance Ito after a not guilty verdict for OJ. Whereas she can only imagine what it would have been like for Lance Ito had the verdict gone the other way.
The Zimm Judge knows which side of her bread gets the butter.
Did I say the f bomb?
And I'm Asking people to keep it down.
A fucking political show trial.
Which is why I hope Zimmerman gets convicted. If the mob doesn't get its pound of flesh one way, it will get it another. And better Georgie Porgie than me and mine.
Also, this would probably be better for Zimmerman on two fronts. First, if the state loses, the federal government wlll come after him. (Forget that the FBI found that Zimmerman did not act out of any racial malice. Facts and the discoveries of investigations haven't meant shit to this case up till now, why think it will magically start applying again after a not guilty verdict.
Second, if George can survive a few years in a state pen, he's probably got a better chance of living out his life afterwards. As it it, if he gets out he's Public Enemy Number One to a large segment of the population, many of whom will be happy to shot his cracker ass.
And if you think I'm being overly cynical, ask yourself this: If Zimmerman is acquitted, would you want him to move in next door and then have his address tweeted out? Perhaps with the wrong number?
As the example cited by Bags shows. A man can be killed by a seventeen year old with one single, albeit freak, punch.
Did the defense get to present evidence as the possibility that a man could be killed with on punch like that?
I haven't followed the trial minute by minute.
I thought it was just me until I found this.
And seriously, if you had to do one, which would you pick?
The race, the Hispanic and the black and the whites is stuff that is being manipulated to find this man guilty of something he didn't do.
Wrong. No one in power cares about Zimmerman's guilt or innocence either way, or whether or not he is found guilty or innocent. They merely want an issue from which they can profit either financially or politically. That's why Sharpton got involved, to make a buck off this somehow. (I won't tell a man his business, so I have no idea how he does it. I know how Jesse Jackson runs his shakedown operation, but I don't know Sharpton's business model.)
And Barack Hussien Obama adopted Trayvon's ghost to make certain that the black vote turned out in huge numbers last year.
Governor Rick Scott pushed the prosecution for fear of riots and in an effort to appease blacks so that that WON'T turn out in large numbers when he runs for re-election on 2014.
Actually the Governor is probably the only major party that really cares about this one way or the other, besides the Martin family attorney. It will not help Scott's re-election efforts if a large part of the state gets burned down in race riots. He's only a centi-millionaire, and not a billionaire, so he can't buy enough adverts to paper over large riots.
Benjamin Crump, the Martin family attorney, is probably secretly hoping for a Zimmerman Not Guilty verdict. If Zimmerman wins, he'll have a lot more incentive to sue the Hell out of organizations like NBC that slandered him last year, and will be MUCH more likely to win. Which means Zimmerman would have more money to pay off the Martin family (and their attorney) later.
The whole damned thing is perverse as Hell as far as the incentives go.
Lem, I don't think the defense went that route. But they've put on at least two forensic witnesses who have just wowed the pants off all the commentators, and they seem to be cruising to an easy win - in a just world.
And I did get bagoh's point. But punching a ref over a yellow card is still stupid. Or was it his second yellow? Then it is ever so slightly less stupid.
Sad, but I understand your point. But I would have to think more about it to say that it is equally valid to the idea that show trail should be allowed to go on in the future. Or better stated it, that show trials are at the states disposal for them to use whenever they want, should Zimm be found guilty.
Well, Farley was into drugs so much so it killed him.
So knowing what I know about me and bearing in mind that Farley was weak for it in mind - I would have picked Farley, of course. a celebrity... a comedian... drugs and alcohol binges? the life of what's his name that got fired from the hit tv show Men? he is the son of a major lefty.
Hands down Farley... its not even a contest.
The fact that Farley is a man... well, nobody is perfect?
Farley was... actually only Farley his mother and people who saw him naked really knew what he was.
Not that I'm obsessing about it... but you brought it up to my attention and because is my blog I want to make a good impression and all that.
Legal Insurrection has a bunch of videos on the trial by a guest blogger and each one has an image to start out like a YouTube page of suggestions, half are Farley on SNL with that skit and half are Zimmerman trial, and I was SO disappointed when I watched and didn't see Farley, just the fat ugly judge. I honestly thought it was a video frame and expected Farley mixed in. Bummer!
Lem, I was speaking generally, not to you.
I'd love to see justice done and that's the end of it, but the Lefties want mob rule and (dare I say?) lynch law in this country so they can stir up the left-hand side of the bell curve and go after anyone they want.
They really can do it now, but people are wising up - witness the Paula Deen business and how many people have taken her part.
Has anyone seen comments by rhhardin anywhere since the comments were shut down at Althouse?
Now Lem we all know you have a problem with figuring out the tranny thing.
What about that Celia Cruz look-a-like in the Fenway Park bathroom in 1997?
Seriously dude stick with your strengths.
I haven't. But I haven't been to the sites he could have gone to.
He put up a picture yesterday.
Score Update: Sox 7, Mariners 7 in the 8th.
I need a thingy on the blog that would keep up the score.
If anybody knows of something like that, could you let me know how to get it and put it up? It has to be something free of course. I'm not making any money on this and I'm not spending money I don't have on it either.
Too late on the show trial front. It is well established at this point in time. Furthermore, it is well established that the federal government will do whatever it takes to make certain that the President's personal political needs are fulfilled at the expense of anyone else, or everyone else.
Rule of law is dead. The government now enforces all laws in arbitrary and capricious manner. The social contract is dead, because most people don't even know what has been lost, and for that matter a majority of voters just don't give a damn. They don't care about high unemployment, or lawlessness, or anything else, so long as they get to vote for the Magic Negro to give them goodies.\
It's now officially every man for themselves, and devil take the hindmost. And THAT is why I want George Zimmerman to go to jail, because if he gets out, I get placed a little closer to the back of the pack.
check for an MLB widget. it will be relegated to the sidebar, but automatically update
The trial, as an SNL skit, could probably have been fairer.
Cool. I got to spend sometime rearranging things. I like how Icepick is showing some things over at his place.
I haven't experimented with them, so I cannot say how well they work, but ESPN and the Boston Globe have widgets available. The RSS feeds are only of news stories and not scores
@Freeman: Wasn't there a maggie's farm blog where he and meade used to hang out together?
Not an empty room, a desert!
Has anyone seen synova commenting?
Not regularly. Occasionally at Ace's and I can't remember if it was Legal Insurrection or the Other McCain where I saw her last.
I went to Synova's blog but while trying to compose an invitation I remembered I only had fewer than 3 mildest of tangential communications with her. I thought it might look presumptuous of me and appear like I was taking advantage of a situation for my benefit.
Synova, if you are reading this, you are welcomed here anytime. if only to just say hello. and maybe give us your impressions. Same for Palladian and Pogo and all the guys and gals known as the Althouse commentary community.
Come big come small if only to seek Shelter From The Storm
"And if I pass this way again you can rest assured
I'll always do my best for her on that I give my word
In a world of steel-eyed death and men who are fighting to be warm
"Come in" she said
"I'll give you shelter from the storm".
What about DBQ?
The time that the comments have been close I've reflected on what it meant to me. It all depends on how I choose to look at it. For myself this has turned into an opportunity for me to leave the nest and get my own place.
I still have that nest there, at Althouse, whenever I want, but know that there are certain things that should be best said at my own place. while maybe linking back to her.
Everybody... I don't know the details exactly of what happened. I know that... or I should say... I imagine that it took a lot for Althouse to close the comments so abruptly.
And I also believe that anything no matter how enjoyable and rewarding can turn into something undesirable if we are not vigilant.
She needed to dial it back a little. I don't think that's too much to ask. I'm trying to put myself in her shoes.
"Now there's a wall between us something there's been lost
I took too much for granted got my signals crossed
Just to think that it all began on a long-forgotten morn
"Come in" she said
"I'll give you shelter from the storm".
Actually, those shoes would cost me an arm and a leg, even if I was into them, like the judge at Zimms trial would appear to be... nttiawwt... I could not afford them.
AllenS is MIA too.
DBQ is around. We started a book club reading of "The Disappearing Spoon" link.
That's good. btw Pollo maybe you can help me with something.
I was just trying to post a picture from my flickr account and blogger wont let me... you know what's going on?
I' hadn't tried it before, so maybe its a setting I need to change.
maybe check the url to see if it's correct? I only upload from iphone, desktop, or url.
Lem, I talked to DBQ at Scott's AlhouseUnfiltered blog. He's going to let it lapse, but is directing people to Chip Ahoy's AlthousesLookingGlass. You might want to send him a note asking him to give this place a mention.
If you want to invite people over, don't be afraid. Synova is good people and she'll be nice; btw, Troop is at EBL inviting a good many old Althousians to send him a request for an invite, so don't be shy.
Hey Lem I have baseball post up.
"Talking Baseball with the Disembodied Head of Ted Williams."
Ed, the thing is people are sometimes motivated by agendas that cause problems. I have to be careful not to, I don't know how to put this... I know this whole thing is going to get sorted out eventually. I want to be in peace with everyone concerned in the end. Althouse calls it cruel neutrality. whatever that means.
Don't you think that smells by now?
Icepick has it right. The family & Crump don't care if Zimmerman gets convicted or not. They're after a civil suit with millions of dollars from the HA.
And the liberal MSM didn't give a shit about the facts. They just wanted a "Big white racist" kills "innocent little black kid" story, to keep racial tensions high and blacks voting Democrat.
Ok I'll try that but it sounds scary to post a picture from my own computer. don't picture contain stuff that runs the NSA?
I want to do what Althouse did almost everyday. and not enough if you ask me. that is post pictures to her flickr account (I have done that w/o a problem, and then post links from her flickr to her blog. a trifecta of sorts.
Don't worry Lem, she'll invite you back. Before the Zimmerman verdict, the comments section will be back up. Straight from the horses mouth!
RH seems pretty self-sufficient. He's probably making a few pithy comments on some other blog, and that's enough. Or maybe he's just going on longer bike rides.
I just want to read his comments wherever they are.
Straight from the horses mouth!
That's so funny... I'm like maybe I should comment like Althouse would - go to un-linkable OED and quote away... and then I catch myself - what are you Althouse now?

Yea... later after picking Levity because it just so happens to work with Lem, I was thinking your string monologues were the essence of Levity. funny how things have a way of working out. while one is doing them it doesn't make sense until after.
Which reminds me of a blog post I want to do, based on a short film I like a lot. Maybe tomorrow.
The Zimmerman trial dummy generated a bit of heat...
(1) So far as symbols go, Zimmerman is close enough to Zildjian for my simple tastes.
(2) One of the negatives about this Althouse-no-comment thing is I'm back to trying to figure out and classify the various sock puppets and other erstwhile alter egos. That might not be indicative of mental illness but it's a fool's errand, nevertheless.
(3) Gotta go. Wife just told me it's time for me to give the cat his medicine.
That stunt was very mockable.
I'm loving the Burden Of Proof chart the defense brought with them, and I'm just seeing photos/screen grabs of it via Twitter. Meme it: Now.
