Some of the posters might get a little sensitive about their posts being hijacked by a lot of off-topic comments. >sotto voce< you know how Lem can be...
Lem I don't think I've mentioned to you that I appreciate your efforts in getting this blog going. So thank you. I've been.laid up a bit and it's nice to have this forum.
I like that you don't kick us off for saying stupid stuff. I can't always help it. George is a good name.I met a Polish guy who said that George in Polish was spelled Jersey--pronounced Yershey--George. That was his name.
Ha! I put up an official open thread because one was requested, and I figured this one was about that baby and George Carlin, two topics that seemed disparate enough to generate lots of interesting comments.
I hate George Carlin - he was a pretentious, unfunny, bitter, coke head atheist. Another 'entertainer' who wanted to tell us all about about Life, the Universe, and everything -based on his "wisdom"; which mainly consisted of not dying from Cocaine abuse and a lifetime telling jokes.
In real life kind words go far. Random. That's the way to go. Out of the blue someone gets a message and it arrives as a bolt.
My brother has been angry with me but unwilling to admit it. I told him I'm sorry and that was that. But still no communication. He's busy, you see.
So there was a link yesterday on Insty that said HDTV is looking for talent. I wrote to my brother and told him to submit a cd he burned a long time ago. The guy is a natural. I said, just send it in with a note, you can do plumbing, electrical, roofing, landscape, carpentry, you name it, but his brilliance lies in innate genius in getting people to open right up. It is impressive. Whereas I put people off, they are attracted to him like flies to... something really attractive to flies.
The cd is amazing. He tours a previous home of ours. It's a big place and he takes the viewer all over. He goes by the closet at the foyer and said, "This is where my older brothers and sisters used to tie me up," without breaking his monologue. I was mortified, before I realized he's putting us on.
The little shit.
Then in the basement, I've never seen the whole space so cleared. Save for a wall of white storage boxes all the same size. He zeros in on one particular box and zooms in on the label. It says. "Books too nerdy even for Bo to read"
I'm Bo to him.
And I thought while viewing, "What the fuck? I know they had some of my text books over there but I have no such thing as that."
He opened the storage box and showed that it's empty. And laughed like a loon. He said, "There IS no book too nerdy for Bo to read Haha haha haha haha ha"
The he goes outside. The yard is completely cleared. It never looked as good as it does in the video, no lying, my dad had crap all over the place. The brick of the house, the architecture impressively stands out and his adorable little spaniel is sniffing around in the far corner. He calls, "Skippy, come here!" The little dog comes running directly straight to him, his floppy ears flopping, he is the cutest thing in the world small bigger bigger bigger blame.
And I cannot find that cd anywhere. I looked through hundreds of crap cds and I know I did not toss it. I'm still looking for it, and when I do find it, I will upload it because it is priceless. My brother is one singularly funny and attractive personality.
He wrote right back and said my message was timed perfectly. He was hitting a rough patch and could use the support. My words hit the spot with him. He attributed intuition to me that I do not possess. I am saying, if the thought strikes you, drop a random kind note. Its impact is immeasurable, that is, you cannot measure it.
That's a sweet story. And about what you said at the end: I'm not religious, but I read somewhere that one way of being a Christian is to listen to the Holy Ghost. That is, if it pops into your head, 'I should call Mom,' you call Mom. That is, just follow the flow without resistance, which is a pretty Zen thought.
Deborah, as someone who wrote a book on the Holy Spirit, I think you're close.
If we're in tune with the Spirit, I think our instincts are shaped that direction, increasingly making our lives more fluid in terms of God's overall work in and through us.
The trouble is there are competing instincts. So, sometimes even the worst person is seemingly compelled or led to do something (which we can see in Scripture) but that doesn't mean they're consistent with that particular leading.
Others can be so in tune with God, they're like in a ballet, moving gracefully through life, resonating hope and love, talking when they need to, quiet when they need to. That's part of the process of sanctification (to use the theological term).
I have to agree with rcocean and Patrick about Carlin. He was also a liar. I saw him once on Imus on MSNBC wherein he claimed he never worked overtly political yet I caught him on an HBO concert special bitterly tearing into Geo H. W. Bush for the Gulf War. (Don't know if it's on YT or not)
George Carlin was in the Air Force, in the early 60s I believe. He was an avionics technician working on B-52s in Louisiana. I think he got kicked out or was not allowed to re-enlist, one or the other. I don't think he talked about it much.

Hey, looks like an open thread where we are free to talk about "stuff". Danke.
All right, I gotta get to bed.
My favorite Carlin bit, even moreso than the differences between football and baseball.
Open threads.
When there wasn't one, I wanted one.
When there was one, I had nothing to say.
I rarely have something to say, but that's not here nor there.
I think the whole open thread concept is pretty much useless here now. Isn't pretty much every thread open?
That's it exactly, Lem. It's almost biblical.

Carlin was very funny but he got awfully bitter toward the end.
George Alexander Louis.
The royals are passing on the Apple Cart?
Greta is taking Obama to the woodshed. Bravo.
Ha! I put up an official open thread because one was requested, and I figured this one was about that baby and George Carlin, two topics that seemed disparate enough to generate lots of interesting comments.
But now I see this was intended as an open thread. Lesson learned.
Oh, so Jerzy Kosinski was a George? Didn't know that.
In the panel not shown after the one Chip posted yesterday, the nurse cried out, "By George, it's a lizard!"
It stuck.
Since its proclaimed an open thread.

He was the Roger Moore of Comedy

I thought for sure they would go for Arthur Pendrag Windsor. Dammit.
Ha Freeman. You guys should have a contest. Each of you put up an open thread and see who.bets the most comments!
blame = blam
I thought this was a post about Carlin and other assorted related themes in the news. So not really an open thread as much as a George thread.
Maybe a spectrum of open threads. They're all open, but some are more freewheelin' than others.
Some give a theme to develop, or a picture to paint. Others just are a blank canvas.
Nice one Chip Ahoy. A kind word waiting to happen.
I have been thinking about Crack's large (so he says) black hog.
Do you think there is a possibility that Crackey and Ingy could be the next Meadhouse?
Right behind the local Costco, someone just built a U-Store-It. That always makes me laugh.
Chip:
"Whereas I put people off"
For realz?

That's very true Chip.
Great post Chip

To add, that's not just one way to be a Christian, that's the only way.
Titus, where's your avatar?
How about this, from the Large Black Hog Association
Thanks, Paddy.
Ah, thanks again, Paddy.
@rcocean: speaking of comedians we don't like, Dennis Leary comes off as a mean drunk.
"Dennis Leary comes off as a mean drunk."
Haven't seen a lot of him, but he seems to really angry - as opposed to "comic" put-on angry.

Yeah, not highly political....much..
Titus, no.
I think there should be at least one certified and certifiable Open Thread each day.
It was a shame about Carlin. In his earlier, less bitter years he was genuinely funny and original.
I can't think of any comic who was so consciously aware of language. Not just The Seven Words, but all aspects of language.
I shall love him, and pet him, and call him George.
Can we have a Looney Tunes thread sometime?
People who incline to economics go into other careers.
So every entertainer, pretty much, is a lefty.

Creeley:
"I think there should be at least one certified and certifiable Open Thread each day."
Aren't they all certifiable :)
I agree, but I think it's already pretty much a given.
(Interesting, Ken.)
This is one of his best bits. He got just too negative and political for me toward the end of his life, like Woody Allen.
Jerzey is George and Stashu is Stan.
