But that stuff is old and "ism" is new... and improved.

@rcommal: What depth of real music appreciation you have! Added to all the pop music stuff you know of and about.

schism

Middle English scisme, from Anglo-French scisme, cisme, from Late Latin schismat-, schisma, from Greek, cleft, division, from schizein to split

Not only did my dad have a stamp collection, we also owned a typewriter of that variety.

The Lincoln quote was an apt ending, coming from the same speech as this:

Both parties deprecated war, but one of them would make war rather than let the nation survive, and the other would accept war rather than let it perish, and the war came.

MamaM: You get to stay above the fray as you have for years. More power to you. Folks love your persona. They do, because you earned it. Full stop: You have.

OTOH, I'm on my own and I owe you precisely zero. So it goes w/r/t you and also mostly every one else who made the choices they did.

rcommal, Your musical notes have a way of reaching my ears and embellishing my surroundings, though I rarely know what to make of your crypticity. Even the cats liked tonight's selections. Of course you own me precisely or imprecisely nothing. As for being on one's own, power amplifies when person and persona are of one accord, and frays become less compelling and particular in nature. If tonight's offering is part compliment, it will be accepted as such. If not, the music itself is complement enough.

Had a good long talk with my dad, 76, last evening. He called to wish me a happy 53rd. We talked a lot about music among other things. And we reminisced. Didja know that I could gut and scale fish by age 5? And that I was taught to shoot a rifle and a shotgun by 3rd grade? Among other things. Yet at the same time I was raised by by full-time arty people--hell, my dad was not just a professional musician but also [gasp] a college professor. And my mom was a professional musician, in addition to the other stuff she did on the side to fund that.

I hate broad-brush politicking. I can't stand gratuitous insulting. And I have been without patience for lazy stereotyping for a few years now. Whatevah: so whack me. It doesn't matter, in the end, because it can't possibly take away what I do, in fact, know.

I'd hope she would call first -- as a warning.

MamaM: You are the person and woman right up there with the other gals most admired for at least 3-5-7-9 years. You've earned it and I salute you. Bless your heart.
