CONEY ISLAND?

It's not the Coney Island I remember.

Only one thing is the same.

The craic was good.

Ah, summer...

Long hot days, plenty of sunshine so I can work as much as I care to, and by golly, I am gittin' 'er done.

Today I started with some boards that I sawed out of some slabs of silver maple yesterday:

I planed them down and sawed them to width and length - once I finish sanding them they will become cutting boards like this one:

I created a nice heap of chips and dust:

And because it wasn't hot enough I burned that pile this afternoon. Then it was just about right.

Then we had a nice sunset. All in all a good start to the summer.

WKRLEM: Rave On John Donne

Go and catch a falling star,
Get with child a mandrake root,
Tell me where all past years are,
Or who cleft the devil's foot,
Teach me to hear mermaids singing,
Or to keep off envy's stinging,
            And find
            What wind
Serves to advance an honest mind.

KLEM AM

Overheard at Lem's:
Dust Bunny Queen said....
Listen to this while contemplating.....Gloria en Excelsis Deo or a clunky rendition of Michael Row the Boat Ashore.

The phrase Gloria in Excelsis Deo (glory to God in the highest) appears in a familiar traditional Christmas carol...the one with the long, melismatic vowel movement inside "gloria." You will recognize it:

I put up the French/English video to recognize the original French carol -- no matter how Latin the refrain.

I also put up Van Morrison's "Gloria" to see if he had used a bit of melisma in his 1964 hit:

I think he did. What do you think?

WKRLEM: The dogs bark but the caravan moves on......

Van was already starting to paunch up but his pipes were at their finest. His best performance.

I bought one these the other day:

It's pretty cool, but I'm saving it as a gift for someone special.

Here's the series closer song, followed by the one they should have used, IMHO:

Civil rights struggles are universal and belong to all races, nations, creeds, etc., etc. To say otherwise or to emphasize exclusivity seems foolish.

That song is from the last U2 album I bought. I'm still kicking myself for missing their show in Madison at a small club around 1982. At the time, I only knew them from MTV and their version of "Gloria" which had nothing in common with Van Morrison.

Sunday Morning With Van Morrison

She's as sweet as Tupelo honey.  She's an angel of the first degree.

Have a great Sunday everyone!

Them cover Dylan in 1966, the best year for pop music:

Stray thoughts:

The song starts out sounding like the opening to Ben E. King's "Stand By Me" (1961) but then it hits a sour note to distinguish it.

I knew that Beck had stolen that sound for his song "Jack-Ass" -- I just couldn't place it in my past.  Then I googled -- duh!

Why wasn't this the parting song for Walter White in "Breaking Bad"?

Why doesn't iTunes sell this version of this song?
