Trump continues cat and mouse with MSM

"According to Ari Fleischer, former WH press secretary for George W. Bush, Trump may soon go toe-to-toe with a formidable presence: the White House press corps. In an op-ed in today's Wall Street Journal, Fleischer points out, rightly so, that the coveted 49 seats in the WH briefing room are doled out primarily to mainstream media, with few going to digital outlets such as, ahem, IJR, for example. Right now, the White House Correspondents' Association determines who gets which seats, but Fleischer ponders a scenario where the Trump administration takes back assigning power, writing, “the valuable West Wing real estate occupied by the White House press corps isn't the property of the press. It belongs to the U.S. Government.”"

How not to cover mass shootings

That would be great advice if CNN didn't want more mass murders, but the truth is, more mass murders = better ratings for CNN. Telling a network like CNN how to prevent these types of shootings is like a batter telling the pitcher where he likes the ball.

"Carnage in the classroom..."
Jesus Christ.

Although it may be true, as far as I'm aware there isn't a single study that shows a demonstrable link between news coverage of mass murders and increased likelihood of more mass murders. The same may not be true for suicides although this relationship is complex.
What is documented however, is the increased fear that comes from media coverage of crime and what that potentially means to our collective and individual psyche (not to mention the reflexive actions we take as a result (e.g. the patriot act)).

"Hillary supporters warn media against using words of criticism as 'sexist'"

We will be watching, reading, listening and protesting coded sexism,” the pro-Hillary group HRC Super Volunteers warned The New York Times’ Amy Chozick Wednesday.
Here are the banned words: polarizing, calculating, disingenuous, insincere, ambitious, inevitable, entitled.
The Washington Post list of banned words, not to be used when writing about Hillary Clinotn, is more extensive.
So these words are now off the table: "polarizing," "calculating," "disingenuous," "insincere," "ambitious," "inevitable," "entitled," "over-confident," "secretive," "will do anything to win," "represents the past," and "out of touch."
What other words, often used to describe something Hillary Clinton does, do you think she should ask to be banned?

NYT: Michael Isikoff Leaves NBC News

It’s a totally amicable departure,” he said. “I had a good ride at NBC, and I’m proud of a lot of what I was able to do there. But it was increasingly clear they were moving in directions in which there were going to be fewer opportunities for my work.”

Michael Isikoff was the first journalist to find out about then president Clinton's affair with Monica Lewinski. Newsweek, the shop Isikoff worked for at the time, spiked it, they pulled the story.
Matt Drudge wound up with the scoop and the rest is, as they say, history.
I believe that incident, that open defiance of the code to first inform the American public, despite of who is in power, spelled the beginning of the end for the Main Stream Media monopoly on what is considered newsworthy. Their bias was revealed for everyone to see.
People now can choose where to get their information. #BundyRanch is but the latest example.

"Reports: Alleged trend of 'knockout game' a myth"

"Some news organizations are refuting the existence of an alleged phenomenon known as the "knockout game" that has been the subject of media warnings in recent weeks."
According to reports by CNN, the Today show, USA TODAY and others, the game takes place when young people randomly assault strangers in an attempt to knock them out with one punch.

The attacks are leading to arrests, more officers on the streets and warnings for vigilance among the public, law enforcement officials and victims advocates told USA TODAY. In New Haven, Conn., police spokesman David Hartman said police are investigating six incidents in the past month as possible "knockouts."

But police officials in several cities where the attacks have been reported say the knockout game is an urban myth, and that attacks that have received recent attention in the media have been random assaults, the New York Times is reporting.

Zimmerman Cymbal

This thread is dedicated to the vibrations the Zimmerman trial is generating. The Race Cymbal, the seemingly ever present and never new, the loudest among the instruments with which we make music.

A reader of Althouse, identifying herself as Jane, wrote to Althouse about a new way the AP seems to be  playing the same old song and dance. Well, the AP is playing the song so we dance to it.
"This must be in the AP stylebook somewhere, because that sentence, or some variation therof, is found in every single article about the case:  Martin "is" black but Zimmerman only "identifies" as Hispanic.  Can you recall any other situation in which AP has played with racial identification vs. race as a fact in the news story?"
Althouse says...
"This is a great topic about which to maintain vigilance."
At Lem's, topics like race, highly technical, that require a tremendous amount of dexterity and years and years of practice to be able to play and not, you know, get booed off the stage, not to mention drive your neighbors and family member crazy, are better left to the professionals.
