The people visiting my neighbor couldn't decide what they wanted to do. Some wanted to trail the boat to Lake Superior and motor around the Apostle Islands. Others want to say home and play fooseball because it is still cold up here.
The reached a compromise.

We know that is a bullshit photograph - according to the guy who rubs one out while watching The Day After Tomorrow, there is no ice in the northern hemisphere. He should know, as he is from the southern hemisphere, which, if one pays attention, currently has more ice than anyone has ever seen before.
If that picture was taken on Ipanema, then I believe that story.
Sixty, the frame of the table was hand carved out of old ash. I thought you'd are that.
*see, not are*
Nothing better than a big ash table, I always say!
What a great pic.
Haz, weren't you the guy that posted the pic of the floating picnic table? Same folks?
Money maker!
Just imagine selling floating structures that look like floating ice bergs.
Is that what this picture is?
AllenS, I think you've just come up with another idea for Chick's Faking Bad line of products.
Ice--
I'm thinkin' -- ca-ching ca-ching ca-ching!
I'd love a fake ice dock, here in MN.
Chick is the king of fake.
Ice beat me to it...
I fixed the storm post from last night by switching the tweets positions. I switched the lightning tweet to appear first and the fake gray lady under the storm tweet to appear after a "read more" jump.
Lessons learned. Not bad for someone so easily duped :)
When Pogo once reported that he and his kids were building a dock out of oil drums, I thought of this:
reall men of genius
More and more baseball bats are being made out of maple, rather than ash.
Not everyone who gives pride of place to a statuette of a lady with a clock where her stomach ought to be thinks it's a gag.
Everyone --
There's a lot of lakes in Wisconsin here I and Haz live.
That means a lot of people with lake shore property.
A floating structure that looks like an ice floe that can accommodate a bunch of people with their grills and beer coolers would be a big sensation.
If, I was a younger man, I would be all over this idea.
Nick, I don't recall as many bats breaking back in the Seventies.
Allen, you have enough to do building six-foot retaining walls.
deb, true, but this is a money maker. I can smell it.
What does it smell like?
ca-ching ca-ching ca-ching
I've got other projects going on at the moment, so, I can't follow this idea, but this IS A MONEY MAKER!
Deborah, You are correct. The harder maple drives the ball farther than ash, but it is much more prone to splintering.
Yellow birch is also being used now - why, I have no idea. It seems too soft to be a good choice for bats. Time will tell if they make the grade - heck, I never thought maple was a good choice either, at least compared to ash.
I have turned bats out of purple heart and Colorwood, as well as the traditional ash. I modeled mine off an old Lou Gehrig signature bat that I have had since I was a yute.
That is a mighty bat, that's all I can say - from the days when that game was played by men.
Wait. I thought that compromise had been declared a bad thing, on account of it leading to such vermin as DINOs, RINOs, and other sorts of middlers, the defining shared characteristic among them having to do with being compromising beings at essence all of which as adjudged by those who are--one must and ought assume--not any such thing.
As I said:
Wait.
Hey do I at least get points for dispensing with punctuation
Personally I bet not
I don't know, Allen. It might be too kitschy to catch on after people have seen a couple of them. I think there's be more of a solid market for nicely crafted and clever floating docks. Essentially floating screened-in porches (without the screens), with railings and Adirondack chairs and a fire pit. Or is that already a thing?
Haz, weren't you the guy that posted the pic of the floating picnic table? Same folks?
Different folks. Not certain if the same or different brands beer were involved.
....floating structures that look like floating ice bergs...
That's real ice. But yeah, a deck or raft that looked like and iceberg would be interesting. That's if the doggone DNR with its many regulations regarding docks and rafts wouldn't mess things up.
Sixty, Thanks, my man. I took a tour of the Louisville Slugger factory. I love factory tours, and this was one of the best. They have to have misters like you see in Palm Springs just to settle the dust. What a wonderful smell. They have their own forest in NY and Pa. The Japs are killing them w/ imports.
They have specs on computerized lathes for all the MLB players on their list. They were making the pink Mother's Days bats when I visited. Got a knob from Jeter's bat for my daughter. They make about a dozen for each player, so they can give to moms, grandmas, etc.
Cool, Sixty. That Colorwood is radical.
My son has in his possession two or three old-school bats from my Dad's garage. At least one is a Louisville slugger.
When I didn't see them, I thought one of his cousins might have them, but he said he had them. He'll share later on, but he's kind of a sentimental archivist. He also has my dad's four little cross-bows, which is a good thing, as one of my nephews is kind of weapon happy. He's building his own rifle, etc. Loves nerf guns and such. He and I have gone 'round about aiming even a toy gun at anyone. It was cute the time he asked me in a reasonable, conversational tone to get down the air gun his parents had put in the closet, so I could watch him shoot it. But I said, no, he had to do that with his dad.
My other nephew has impulse control issues due to ADHD, so no loose cross-bows for him :) But my son will share later when things level out.
But it was your post, Haz. So at least my memory sort of works.
So is building impromptu floating devices while drinking beer something people in Wisconsin just do? You're like Haitians or Cubans from back in the day.
