WaPo: White House mistakenly identifies CIA chief in Afghanistan

"The CIA’s top officer in Kabul was exposed Saturday by the White House when his name was inadvertently included on a list provided to news organizations of senior U.S. officials participating in President Obama’s surprise visit with U.S. troops."
The White House recognized the mistake and quickly issued a revised list that did not include the individual, who had been identified on the initial release as the “Chief of Station” in Kabul, a designation used by the CIA for its highest-ranking spy in a country.

The disclosure marked a rare instance in which a CIA officer working overseas had his cover — the secrecy meant to protect his actual identity — pierced by his own government. The only other recent case came under significantly different circumstances, when former CIA operative Valerie Plame was exposed as officials of the George W. Bush administration sought to discredit her husband, a former ambassador and fierce critic of the decision to invade Iraq.

The Post is withholding the name of the CIA officer at the request of Obama administration officials who warned that the officer and his family could be at risk if the name were published. The CIA and the White House declined to comment.

What stunning incompetence!

For your stupid or dishonest reporter’s information, it was Richard Armitage, Colin Powell’s top deputy, who exposed Valerie Plame’s identity to the late journalist Robert Novak. Armitage and Powell kept his role secret while Cheney and Libby were being falsely accused of doing what your reporter falsely claims. The record is unambiguous on this point. Armitage now admits that he was the leaker.

Typical administration incompetence. Did they not consult DCIA John Brennan? He's now DCIA and not in the West Wing as a under-the-radar operator...so I guess not. Tough shit John!

By the way,l when Valerie Plame was revealed she was a desk jockey in Langley about as clandestine as a holiday parade. She had earlier been a station analyst...long ago. Much ado about nothing.

Now the guy revealed by his own clumsy blundering administration is a station chief in the field in a combat zone. Big BIG difference. The comparison is bullshit...the largest outing ever was by renegade CIA officer Phillip Agee who wrote a book in 1975 that outed dozens of agents worldwide.

No, no, you don't understand.

This is just like the VA.

They aren't trying to kill anybody themselves. They just want nature to take its course.

If this had been Republican etc. etc.

I am so sick of the double standard I could barf on the next journalist I encounter in my mind.

I haven't barfed since that time I drank alcohol with my mates on holiday and ate a whole plated of fried clams.

Fired clams are gross. It's all fried batter and oil. Hardly any clam flavor to speak of.

In college we had a whole section on the role of the fourth estate. Boy, would my paper be different today, and a LOT longer with example after example and example and example and example and example and example, at least double if not triple the required length with footnotes out the ass.

I would get an A.

And the professor would write, "Good, but a bit long."

And I would write back. "I've only just started and you suck."

The record of incompetency is becoming tedious.

I welcome the Obama defenders to rebut with cases of exemplary competence on the part of this "best and brightest" administration.
