Overheard: Ritmo

"Windows 8 is not the platform for a PC, AFAIK. It works awesome on Windows phones, which are massively under-rated (as far as market share goes). The camera features on Nokias surpass just about anything else and the apps Windows offers get better and better."

I'm still in the Dark Ages with my little red Samsung slider, which I like as far as tactility, size, and cheerful red color. But it has terrible sound quality as far as hearing people speak, and even worse picture function. Terrible resolution.

My sister was raving about how I need to get an iPhone, but I can't handle the touchscreen keyboard. Besides, it will be a while before I upgrade to a smart phone. What do you think is the best phone smart phone?

The Samsung Galaxy models seem really good at the moment. But the truth is that they're all kind of converging, utility-wise. Basically do the research to make certain you don't overspend or buy a dud.

I bought an iPhone a while back - it is annoying and when the time comes to replace it I hope there is something outside of the Apple cult that is suitable.

I see some nice phones from time to time - I think the true test of screen quality is how well you can see them outside. The iPhone sucks in that regard. Maybe next time I see a phone that has a bright screen I will inquire as to the brand.

I use iPhone, but I'm not impressed with the whole smartphone thing.

Phone calls, GPS and e-mail are my main uses. All can also be done on my iPad, but I don't have global roaming on my iPad.

My kids have Samsung Galaxy phones, which have a much bigger screen than an iPhone. I think screen size should be your real determinant. How big a device are you willing to carry all the time?

My kids have Skype going on their Samsung phones. Pretty easy to do facetime. When Dad is at work, he can call Mom and Mom can put Baby on facetime.

Problem here is that Baby is going through separation anxiety stage and cries every time Daddy goes away on the phone.

iPhone.

I lost mine overboard almost a year ago and still haven't replaced it due to finances. But that may change soon enough. I've been using an old flip phone in the interregnum, and it sucks.

The iPhone 5 was what enabled better chirbits because it was an electronically separate handheld from my laptop. When I try to overdub background sounds or do voice overs of music, I get a perceptible audio hum which sucks. Also, the iPhone interface with my iTunes was extremely convenient. The camera on the iPhone 5 was outstanding. Now I'm having to borrow my wife's when I need to photograph a new fake beverage product.

Those features: camera, seamless interface with laptop are a minimum for me.

I have a windows based phone - the Nokia Lumia. I like it.
It's rather large, but that's ok w/ me as I tend to lose things.
You can buy the jelly covers and spice up/change up the color while adding a layer of protection.

Don't buy the jelly covers at the phone store- use amazon (much cheaper)

I'd recommend the windows based phone esp if you use windows at home. The phone and computer can sink up, although I've given up on it because of the bugs. I too have windows 8. It's so-so. I've never been smart enough on the fast moving learning curve to take advantage of all the fancy features.

Also, it is possible to get a pretty decent phone without spending too much. The top of the line phones are great, but stuff similar to the top of the line from two years ago is still quite good and usually much cheaper.

I don't own a phone. When I need one I borrow one of the wife's as she has two.

Of the two I like the Samsung Galaxy. It is bigger and easier to read and use.

I much prefer a tomato can and a string.

Anyone go to walmart for their phone? I was thinking about kicking at&t to the curb and trying the walmart deal.

Yes, Ice, I've always been a late adopter, waiting for prices to fall. Are there smart phones with real keyboards??

One question. If you overhear Rhythm and Balls are you subject to needless verbosity? Just sayn'

@Trooper

Only a masochist would give Ritmo his telephone number!

Icepick said...

I believe the are models that have slide out keyboards, Deborah. You might do better with a virtual keyboard and a stylus, however. My wife's Samsung Galaxy has one of those. (I think that's the model she's got.)

Aridog said...

All Ritmo, R & B et al, needs to do to get my phone number is email me at the address in my profile. Ritmo at times impresses me and other times irritates me...but then so does everyone else on the planet. :-))

I am a "Dickhead" after all, by name and attitude.

What does not being able to handle a touchscreen keyboard involve and how does one reach that awareness?

I'm Full of Soup said...

I have an Iphone and use it for calls, email, larm clock and have added the Runkeeper app which is pretty neat to track of bike rides, hikes etc.

The Dude said...

MamaM - for me, it is an inability to get the keys to work correctly or dependably. I put an Otter Box on my iPhone, and in addition to the hard shell back (which has probably saved the phone a couple of times), it includes a piece of glass over the phone's touch screen. That, combined with my calloused finger tips makes the mashing of the buttons a tedious and frustrating process. But you do what you have to do.

My brother has a phone that has a small slide out keyboard. He swears by it, but he has delicate little pointy IT employee fingers, not bulked up lumberjack fingers.

I couldn't work those tiny keys without a stylus.

I think Androids are the better smart phone, but...

If you are new to smart phones or intend to use the smart phone for business and need to set it up yourself; it's easier with the iPhone.

I currently have an iPhone for international travel. I had a Galaxy S2, which I was told was international capable, but it actually was not. I've looked at the new S5 and like it. It is international capable, but I'm holding out to see the new iPhone 6, because it will be bigger and easier to read. Also big and easy to read is the Note 3.

This is the Ballmer-Gates "Windows everywhere" mentality come back to bite them (right after Mr Ballmer blows 2 bil, too).

Yes, Windows 8 is for PCs, but it tries to be all things to all hardware.

As Microshaft hit the mobile field late, they're playing catch up, but they're losing badly.

Kinda like the good old days of DOS when Gates wasn't everywhere.

PS Win 7 on the PC and an Android Tab2.

I actually have Ritmo's phone number and we have spoken on the phone in real life.

Don't let him fool you. He is a good guy.

But don't tell him I said that. We have to keep him on his toes.

edutcher said...

Does Ritmo exist in real life?

I mean, the space-time continuum the rest of us share.

PS Jay Carney joins Ric Shinseki under the bus.

What's getting ready to go "thud"?

Or is it "kaboom"?

PPS Welcome back, deborah.

I have a LG Spectrum, which is fine and all, but starting to get a little long in the tooth. But I have idiosyncratic needs - since I primarily got the damn thing to act as a testbed for my company's various GPS-dependent apps, the fact that it has a relatively large screen (even the biggest iPhones have laughably small screens for any serious map-based app work) and pretty good GPS was important.

And it's my understanding that most folks are using smartphones less and less as actual, you know, phones. Text is, apparently, the future. I probably use my phone as a phone more often than the norm, primarily because it's a useful way to forward support calls when I have to cover the phones afterhours.

Guildofcannonballs said...

I didn't want to go to a touchscreen, but did a fear years back and like it.

It took me about two weeks to get used to the correct pressure and quirks before I liked it.

I really like my Galaxy S4. I broke it one night (got pushed over sparing) and was lost without it. I bought an S2 as a temp. phone for $75 and was impressed by how similar it was to the S4, although a little slower and clunkier in spots. I had to buy a new battery for $50 immediately, so the total cost was $125 plus some driving time.

So my advice is find an S2 or S3 Samsung Galaxy for under $100, bite the bullet and use it for a couple weeks even when it becomes frustrating, and then be more free to choose (more knowledge equals more power when when buyer beware).

Ritno scares me. I like Father Martin Fox a lot more, as far as one can tell from internet exposure at least.

I remember at Althouse a year or two ago Trooper was trying to egg on Father Fox to say "I forgive you my son" or something close to that.

That's funny.

Not Ritno.

Relating to phones, I'm watching Raising Arizona and can't believe the "Government do take a bite, don't she?" scene isn't on every damn channel in every damn town twice an hour and thrice on Sunday.

The Coen's were a product of lots of things, their age coulda been one of 'em, but that being said by God they understood the feeling the common man has when "the government do take a bite, don't she."

GOP must attack government incompetence and not government directly. We all love the military (I hate with passion unreserved John McCain and John Kerry and always will), that's government.

GOP loves government, and I'm talking not just the crony Establishment or didactic fundraisers like I called Ron Paul at the Althouse blog.

GOP hates incompetence, in the office of President especially because of fucks like that C*^% LBJ.

LBJ and his crimes against humanity for vanity needs addressing, harshly and with competence.

http://catallaxyfiles.com/2012/03/07/a-slice-of-history-how-lbj-lost-the-vietnam-war/

Guildofcannonballs said...

Of course we all know how bad things could get, but like the Obamabots saying the economy is just a little delayed and ready to hit 4% for the 2nd quarter, we all must contend with the fact that Obama could end up being the anti-LBJ, and there is something to that.

Instead of vanity guiding reckless results from aggression, Obama could have vanity guiding reckless results from un-aggression.

Holy Christ.

I was gonna try and cite examples from pages 178, 194, 239, 374, 399, and 401, of "Johnson, Lyndon B." in Buckley's great (and my only text in print as it happens, maybe) "Happy Days Were Here Again: Reflections of a Libertarian Journalist."

Doesn't work.

Every article needs to be read, and each one has immense value at this, and most every for the foreseeable future, time.

https://cumulus.hillsdale.edu/Buckley/index2.html#1401499713427_3

You have to go to page 3 as "An Agenda For Consertatives" from January 1990 isn't on the linked page.

That was page 178, and WFB compared LBJ and his reasoning to Reagan and his reasoning.

This is a rough start.

Guildofcannonballs said...

Okay "Ten Years After Vietnam" from April 20th, 1985 is good too.

The oversection (as opposed to "subsection") of this book is "Remembering Communism" written in large letters above the text. This is Oversection 1 of the theme "Remembering Communism", on page 193, of Buckley's "Happy Days Were Here Again: Reflections of a Libertarian Journalist" (which happens to be my only possession, disregarding memories of gold, at this happenstance).

Lol. Can't believe I missed this thread. Anyway, my impression from WP probably has everything to do with Nokia. Check out Lumia product videos on YouTube and see what I mean. 42 megapixel cameras? At the least, you have to admit their video and imaging technology is top-notch.

I never had old Windows phones. Only the new ones.

And that's where my criticism of Windows OS comes in. My desktops were always Windows until I finally got my blue screen. And that was it. Never again.

So my verdict is a total YES on new Windows 8 (Nokia) phones and a total NO for desktop OS's. Go with Apple, or Ubuntu, or whatever. I have no opinion on the new "mid-level" tablet pieces that seem to be filling in some hybrid space between desktops/laptops and phones. It seems like a number of manufacturers are doing them well and now's the time when we'll see the technology for all OS's advancing together in the tablet category.

Then again, cool beans about the Nokia picture resolution. That is so important.
