Historically the event was to help the ladies find a suitable husband, but is now more of a social event"

I watched a handful of episodes of Downton Abbey and I know one of the daughters isn't supposed to be at all good-looking but she was definitely the one I'd have preferred to bang, given the choice, so I'm not quite sure what that says about me.
Lady Edith Bunker?
What's so vital about texting that it always takes precedence over talking to the actual present flesh and blood creature, young lady?
I'm stuck on the words/concept "suitable husband".
What message are these young women attempting to send with their dress, demeanor and phones, and what are they seeking in return?

As I recall, Lady Edith rather enjoyed ploughing more than getting ploughed...
The cellphone is a women's dream. They now have the ability to talk and take pictures of themselves 24/7.
MamaM - you're stuck on the concept? The concept related to George III times, not now.
And if it did relate now, what of it?
I went to a similar thing in Denver hosted by the Owl Club. It's a coming out dealio for black girls. I was Valerie's date. Valerie made me dress up on account of it being a big deal. At the Paramount.
I just looked. I see an owl like that and I immediately think, "M", it also means "master of" or "the boss of" it also means a lot of other little grammatical things, prepositions in English, it all gets very broad, but mostly the owl means "M". But that is irrelevant to the point I am making so try not to let all that distract you. Plus my dad had an owl, and because he already had one that meant I couldn't have one, because he already been there did that. See? You're easily distracted.
I like how the Owl Club admits humble, absurd beginnings. And admits to being basically a one-function club, the debutante ball. It's lovely. Care to see? They're doing their best to find them good husbands, to match them up well. As possible. Given circumstances. It's nice.
Classy.
Truism: Everyone looks better in a formal dress or a Tux.
Joe Biden would say they look clean and articulate
And don't be calling slow Joe a Racist.
He's a Democrat. They get to call and judge whether OTHER people are racists.
But back to the picture. I love the flowers. Nice touch. Someone has a good eye for Photos.
Revolting. But nothing that a tanker truck filled with pig's blood couldn't disrupt.
The photo made me think of the Queen in Snow White -- "Magic mirror in my hand, who is the fairest in the land?" -- only with a 21st century twist.
" "Magic mirror in my hand, who is the fairest in the land?""
Is there an app for that?
Wisconsin is famous for its spoiled brat pussy.
@Palladian
A comment that could be construed in so many ways!
Dorothy Parker said something about if you laid every debutante end to end, she wouldn't be a bit surprised. I'm not 100% sure of that. I bet getting out of those dresses is fairly complicated, and, by the time it happens, the moment has passed.
@William
At that age, the moment keeps coming back around with great frequency.
At least, as I remember...
And if it did relate now, what of it?
I'm not clear what you're asking, rcocean, but this is where I'm stuck: If finding a "suitable husband" were still the goal, what would constitute a suitable husband nowadays for this group of women, who appear to be intently focused on seeking something through their phones, whether it be admiration, affirmation, relationship, or connection? While the setting and elaborate attire are designed to create one impression, the phones represent the another reality, with mixed or ambiguous motives present.
Palladian, LOL!
"Dorothy Parker said something about if you laid every debutante end to end, she wouldn't be a bit surprised. "
I'd be surprised if Dorothy was ever been laid at either end. She was a homely midget but drunk most the time, so its possible.
Yes, I agree in 2013 its doubtful they are trying to find "suitable husbands" at the Ball.
As opposed to the 18th century under George III.
They look like a group of ordinary prom girls.
