I'm all for you taking over the house DJ role, deb. I've picked up more than a few songs from your posts.

As phrases go, "Hit me baby one more time" pairs well with "Oops, I did it again!"

I was just thinking of Madonna in comparison. Madonna's voice is better, but that's not saying much.

There's a youtube vid somewhere with a bunch of female pop stars stripped down to nothing but voice. the two females with terrible vocals are:

Britney and Katy Perry.

Funny you should say that. I think she sings well enough for a pop singer, and had songs I liked a lot. The only reason I'm familiar with her is my daughter was a fan as a teen. I bought her the first two albums, but put the kibosh on the third when she came out with a slutty album cover. I'm sure it affected her sales, at least somewhat.

Both Britney and Katy have made themselves wealthy because they are good looking and they milked the whole pop-studio thing. Their poor vocals are masked behind the big show, the dancing, and their appearance.

Teen-agers get a pass when it comes to taste! ;-)

I liked some pretty bad stuff back in the day, myself.

Stevie Nicks - her voice is different. I appreciate different. All the female pop singers today sound the same to me.

She sings very flat, though. I accept that, because otherwise it's a cool voice.

Buncha warbling divas. Especially they who sing the anthem.

This is fun. A slutty album cover warrants a parental kibosh, while whatever goes in through the ear or is behind the words being sung doesn't figure into the evaluation of worth?

Back to Michelle O claiming women aren't honoring their own voices ("voting against their own voice"), while she allows the voice of another to deliver through the added conveyance and memory binder of music, sentences and words that are nonsensical, demeaning and untrue.

I bought my own albums from junior high on, so my parents weren't directly involved in my music choices. However, I did need to be able to articulate what I liked or found valuable when asked, which most often involved the beat, the mood/tone of the music and often the words. In a home with other kiboshes present, this was an odd gift and freedom I appreciate to this day. The words being sung still matter to me, even when they're as weird as 'my ding a ling" or involved the summoning of try when "ten times out of nine I know you're lying" or the pronouncement going into Michelle's ear over and over that:
I don't care about the lights or the beams
Spend my life in the dark for the sake of you and me
Only way to go is up, them old bitches so wack
I'm so tough, wassup?

It is flat. She has no vocal range at all - just the vaspy.
