"What profession was once highly respected, but is now a complete joke?"

Well, it's still not a complete joke, but the British monarchy at the height of the empire is still probably to date the most powerful family to have existed, and now we're basically like "lol. corgis and spherical ice cubes. Aren't those clothes cute?"
20 years ago: "I had a great travel agent for my vacation."
I'll keep that agent in mind for myself.
Today: "I had a great travel agent for my vacation."
I'll keep in mind that you are a luddite.
Blacksmiths. Once they were one of the most important people, creating needed items for people, kingdoms and warfare. Now it's a hobby.
Pilots. I remember reading that they were the coolest most respected individuals in people's eyes. My father's friend once visited and he's a pilot. The lack of sleep he gets and his schedule combined with the lack of seeing his family for months at a time sounds like an absolute shit job.

Truly? In what way (I'm serious)?
The British Royal Family is a joke? Next to the Rothschilds it's the most insidious financial force in the world.
Anyone who would use the words "spherical ice cubes". A sphere is not a cube, and a cube is not a sphere.
So add "reddit commenter" to that list.
Who am I kidding, they were never respected.
Prince.
Alive or dead.
That was pretty funny dude. I salute you.
Thank goodness that being a self appointed narcissistic blog troll and chide living off your wife's salary is still respected...
That role is as respected as it ever was.
I recently read a biography of Madame Pompadour. She was a talented actress and singer. She never performed professionally but she appeared before the King in amateur theatricals with the most celebrated professionals. She was said to be more talented than the pros. She knew where the money and the prestige lay. Her primary job was to be the King's mistress. All her acting and singing abilities were directed towards making herself more attractive to the King. The King's children by the Queen used the none too affectionate nickname of Mommy Whore when referring to her. I don't think you can call her a whore, but she was some type of courtesan........She knew her trade. The King gave her titles and estates. Being a courtesan was definitely a more lucrative and esteemed profession than being an actress or singer in this days.
Being Bill Clinton's whore has paid off for many women.
Ed - Travel Agent was listed above. (why the *oops*) - and they are no longer necessary (obviously)
Calling them a complete joke is a bit harsh-- they are certainly obsolete.
It is pretty funny that on the great FX drama "The Americans" the Soviet Spies hiding in America in the 1980's have a successful travel agency.
I love that show because they film in my neighborhood. In fact they filmed in front of my old apartment after I moved out.
I wonder what the spies would do now. Own a cell phone store?
We just started The Americans. Some flaws. Too soap opera. But, some good characters and plot lines. What helps the stories is this is just before the cell phone, internet, technology explosion that comes a decade later. Law enforcement has fallen in love w/ technology. I use technology for gathering intelligence on a subject. But, NOTHING beats human intelligence, and this show demonstrates well why. Give me a good source over technology any day. So far[we've watched 9 episodes of Season 1] the more likeable people are the Commies. I'm guessing because fucking Commies write and produce it and Reagan is Prez. John Boy plays a decent bureaucrat.
Lawyers.
Judges. I am looking at you Roberts, you pervy rat bastard.
