Peggy Noonan: Patriotism Trumps Ideology

Wall Street Journal:  In my continuing quest to define aspects of Mr. Trump’s rise, to my own satisfaction, I offer what was said this week in a talk with a small group of political activists, all of whom back him. One was about to begin approaching various powerful and influential Republicans who did not support him, and make the case. I told her I’d been thinking that maybe Mr. Trump’s appeal is simple: What Trump supporters believe, what they perceive as they watch him, is that he is on America’s side.

And that comes as a great relief to them, because they believe that for 16 years Presidents Bush and Obama were largely about ideologies. They seemed not so much on America’s side as on the side of abstract notions about justice and the needs of the world. Mr. Obama’s ideological notions are leftist, and indeed he is a hero of the international left. He is about international climate-change agreements, and leftist views of gender, race and income equality. Mr. Bush’s White House was driven by a different ideology—neoconservatism, democratizing, nation building, defeating evil in the world, privatizing Social Security.

But it was all ideology.

Then Mr. Trump comes and in his statements radiate the idea that he’s not at all interested in ideology, only in making America great again—through border security and tough trade policy, etc. He’s saying he’s on America’s side, period.

That's the thing. Donald is a patriot. Obama not so much. Hillary not so much.

Ted Cruz is a patriot as well. Just a very unlikable one.

This election is a replay of the one between John Quincey Adams and Andrew Jackson.

Trump is Jackson.
Bush is John Quincy.
Cruz is Henry Clay.

edutcher said...

That's the issue with the Cruz crowd. they were so hyped on their Conservative, they never thought about how he connects to the average working stiff.

And he doesn't.

Trump does. I guess all those union guys taught him something.

And he is a Conservative. Maybe not the kind defined by Erick Erickson or Rafael Cruz, but he is Conservative. In the same way many people are. 40% of the American people, in fact.

chickelit said...

My greatest fear about Trump is that he's so singular, and therefore vulnerable.

edutcher said...

Same could be said of Reagan.

People will study his way and learn it. This is the beginning of fighting back.

I don't mind Trump and think it would be fun to see what he can accomplish.

tits.

In this off scheme, it isn't conservativism vs. RMPC. We know how that battle has gone. RMPC has won, but when it's Trump's patriotism/nationalism vs. RMPC, then RMPC might see a setback. For that alone, I would wholeheartedly support Trump in that battle.

Right now they are savaging him because he was defending Mike Tyson. Who was railroaded in Indiana and went to jail for rape there.

Now this is really going to hurt him with black guys. I mean sticking up for Tyson is really the worst. Ya know what I mean?

Trooper York said...

I mean they did the Lucky Luciano thing to Tyson. Tyson did a lot of stuff. He definitely should have been incarcerated. They just framed him this time to get in the jug.

That was why he freaked out.

Trooper York said...

Can't you just see him campaigning with Tyson in Detroit or Baltimore or NYC. Do you think that might give Trump some street cred with the brothers.

I know, I know the feminists are gonna go crazy. They are gonna say how can he defend a rapist?

Simple. He can say "Look I defended him but hey I ain't married to him. Just sayn'"

The illegals threw a hissy fit last night at the Trump rally and another today at the CA Republican convention, where Trump keynoted.

I'm so glad they learned no American history in Guadaljara, so they have no clue how many new voters will go Trump not only from now until June, but also in November.

If nowhere else on the web, you can see the damage at Gateway Pundit (where April will blame it all (as does the One True Ted and all the other Whigs) on Trumpist thugs).

Hell, I want to see him with Louis Farrakhan in Harlem.

Mike Pence - hope that rat can tread water.

Rapeal, Rafal, whatever Cruz Sr is running his mouth again. You're not helping your boy, old man, you're hurtin' him. Did someone actually pour oil on Teddy's head? Did anyone see any difference?

Squeaky Fromm, or whatever that Ohio guy's name is - why is he still wandering around? Doesn't anyone have the heart to tell him that it's over?

And more riots, please. Cull the herd, push the undecideds, and convince any sensible person that lawless illegals are lawless, and illegal.

To get to a banquet in the Hyatt Regency in LA, Trump has to jump fence, cross a ditch to avoid the Leftist mob.

Oh, boy, it looks more like '68 every day. And you can bet the Hildabeast remembers '68.

PS Don surber has a nice piece riffing, like Troop, on Noonan. What he says at the end is gold - and the reason I think The Donald is taking off

Lem, Thanks for the tip on how to get the WSJ piece gratis. Normally, the Trumpees would trash the bitch, Noonan. But, she says all the right things about their guy so all is well. It's a well thought out article. I usually agree w/ her, and even when I don't, respect her experience and intellect.

The Mike Tyson was framed is pure Reality TV garbage. LOL! At first I truly thought it was a joke. It is amazing to read what these Trumpees will say. Absolutely amazing. Oliver Stone and Michael Moore combined could not put out more propaganda than this bra salesman.

ndspinelli said...

If OJ endorses Trump the bra salesman will contribute to finding the real killers of Nicole and Goldman.

ricpic said...

Trump is going to strike fast and strike hard against ISIS, actually there won't be any ISIS left after he strikes, and he'll do it very quickly after being inaugurated, I'm guessing within a month. Not only will that rid us of a nightmare, it will set the world on notice. Watch the speed with which the Obama poison-smog will clear. That's what's known as looking after AMERICA'S interest. And I'm sure Peggy will tut tut from the sidelines...but feel a great relief within. As will millions.

Shouting Thomas said...

Bra salesman sounds like a pretty cushy job to me.

There's a problem with that?

Trump made a joke about Tyson's endorsement. I like that fact that Trump can tell a job, even if it is non-PC.

ndspinelli said...

Has Steven Avery endorsed Trump?

Evi L. Bloggerlady said...

Patriotism (and Nationalism) is part of Trump's appeal. So is economic uncertainty. He is definitely using it to his advantage.

And I agree with Troop, if defending Mike Tyson is crazy, it is crazy like a fox. So Clarence Thomas is a predatory black man and so is Mike Tyson? Truth is no on really knows but them and the women they were with. We have opinions, but we really don't know.

If Trump wins black support in any appreciable amount, Hillary is toast.

Shouting Thomas said...

Has Steven Avery endorsed Trump?

I watched a few episodes of that one and gave up... but...

That Avery guy has serious manboobs and could use a bra.

Troop, can you help him out?

Something that his cellmate might enjoy?

Having done it on any number of occasions, it's a bit superfluous, like the Cruzzers yammering the same old boilerplate that Trump's a clown, a grifter, etc., not to mention that it's just sour grapes.

But, if you want, I'll say I didn't read the piece, have no interest in what she said, or her opinions generally, and have no doubt she'll have a road to Damascus moment some time in September so she can be fashionably on the winning side as she was 8 years ago.

Happy?

ndspinelli said...

Evi, Black people love reality TV. I predict Trump will get double the black vote than the last 2 Republicans. Part of that is because Obama is gone. But, part is because Trump will be recognizable to the black voters.

edutcher said...

I know, Troop. But we mist do our bit to spread a little sunshine.

Seems like Mike Pence caved to the crazies.

Doesn't look like it's going to help

Trump 41 Cruz 32 Kasich 21.

PS Ned Silver's big secret appears to be he has everybody's internal polling smuggled to him. Trump's has him about 10 higher with Kasich taking most of the hit and I something (forget where) saying he expects The Donald to do better.

wow

All the right people seem afraid of Trump.

When you don't have much to go, every little thing helps.

If employed, straight white men become a marginal voting bloc, then America is screwed. It's happening.

Trooper York said...

Listen to what Jamiel Shaw Sr. has to say. That is how Trump gets the black vote.

ndspinelli said...

I just read someone say, "Trump has the common touch." I did a spit take. If Oliver Stone fucked Rachel Maddow, had a child, and had that child be mentored by Michael Moore, a more vapid and shameless propagandist might be created. Otherwise, this idiot will remain the most shameless propagandist. Except Stone, Moore, are successful propagandists. This guy has a few lackeys.

Trooper York said...

You really are getting obsessed bro. It is pretty sad.

Don't you have anything original or creative or happy to share?

You might want to think about taking a step back. You talk about the nasty nurse but you are really edging on to her turf.

Why not chill out a little and calm down.

Nick is the Ted Cruz of this blog just like Birkel is the Ted Cruz of the Althouse blog.

Like the nurse, Spinelli never had a blog of his own. Like the nurse, Spinelli stalks. Like the nurse, Spinelli hates Trump.

One of these things, doesn't belong.

ndspinelli said...

LOL! Obsessed is your middle name vis a vis your Jim Jones leader. And, if you invoke the nurse one more time hold on tight motherfucker. She attacked my FAMILY. You will regret ONE MORE MENTION. Capisce? You just crossed a line. Even a stupid Mick should know better than to do it again. We'll see.

ndspinelli said...

chick, Hold on tight. Delete that comment in 2 minutes or HOLD ON TIGHT!!

ndspinelli said...

chickelit said...

@Spinelli: Obviously you don't understand the root cause of why you pissed me off, despite my telling you three or four times now: Titus commented revealing personal details about my family. I bitched. But YOU! YOU! had the audacity to tell me: "I'll tell you when he [Titus] crosses a line." Do you still think I made that up? WTF else am I suppose to think except that you are either Titus or you are in cahoots with Titus.

Fuck you again, Spinelli.

ndspinelli said...

I am in cahoots w/ NO ONE you insecure, crazy, paranoid, little man! NO ONE!! HOLD ON TIGHT.

Re: ^

However deeply flawed I was then and am now, I managed at least never to make that that mistake.

ndspinelli said...

This nurse, the 2 losers have invoked threatened my wife. She posted on my wives Amazon page that I molested my daughter, my wife knew and did nothing, and that is why my daughter is obese. This nurse stalks my daughter. She has been posting under a slight variation of my 6 month old granddaughter's name. These dogasses know all this. Some of you may not. This is UNACCEPTABLE. There will be consequences for this odious act. I have clearly struck home on THEM. So, these small men strike back by calling in someone who has threatened and stalked MIA FAMIGLIA! It appears bags was driven away w/ bullying lies. This is how propagandists operate. But, these 2 losers have fucked w/ the wrong motherfucker. They have both met me. And, they have both seen I am a genuinely nice, easygoing, guy. But, they have made the mistake a sorry few have made. That is thinking they can fuck w/ this easygoing guy.

Trooper York said...

It is pretty clear who is acting like a bully here. You need to take a step back.and get a grip. Maybe a few days away from the Internet will let you calm down and return to the like able guy who used to post here. It is a nice Saturday morning. Why not go out and live your life. You are starting to sound like a like a crazy person. Seriously.

ndspinelli said...

I'm not bags, ass eyes. You won't drive me away. You crossed a line and you are not man enough to admit it. There are natural consequences for actions. It's cloudy and rainy here. You see, there is a world outside your insular one.
