The bill would deny cities that refuse to enforce federal immigration laws certain Justice Department grants, and is expected to get a House vote on Thursday. The bill is a response to the shooting death of Kate Steinle by an illegal immigrant who had been deported several times. In some other time, at a place far far away, this kind of thing would be an impeachable offence.
The immigrant, Francisco Sanchez, was released despite federal requests to keep him detained, a decision that was required under San Francisco's "sanctuary city" policy.
But a White House statement indicated that the Obama administration doesn't see that event as a reason to pressure sanctuary cities to enforce federal laws.
"This bill fails to offer comprehensive reforms needed to fix the nation's broken immigration laws, undermines current administration efforts to remove the most dangerous convicted criminals and to work collaboratively with state and local law enforcement agencies, and threatens the civil rights of all Americans by authorizing state and local officials to collect information regarding any private citizen's immigration status, at any time, for any reason, and without justification," the Office of Management and Budget said in a statement of administration policy issued Thursday morning.
"If the President were presented with H.R. 3009, his senior advisors would recommend that he veto this bill," the statement said.

"Obama would veto bill stripping sanctuary cities of federal funds"
"The Obama administration on Thursday threatened to veto a House bill that would strip federal law enforcement grants from "sanctuary cities."

Obama needs to come up against at least one veto override in his political career. Harry Truman faced that after a long long Congressional hegemony. The nation became a better place for it.
Perhaps this veto can be the one?
But today's Democrat is still utterly unable to act against the Obama agenda. Thus they will continue to languish in the polls.
There have been more than the one death.
Now that it's registering, because of Trump btw, I'm reading about more victims every day.

@Chickelit - This from the roof tops.
Let Obama veto it. Get him on record. Sure the hack press will do what they can to aid Obama, but the American people on not on board with the protection of illegal immigrant criminals.
There was a death of a local news reporter in OK City a few weeks back. An illegal smashed into his car and killed him.
No national attention whatsoever, as far as I can tell. Doesn't fit the narrative.
As I said elsewhere, maybe it's time for a march on Washington to rattle the Rainbow House gate.
Then again, maybe it's time for a flash mob every time His Poutiness has a tee time. Or a fund-raiser.
That's what the Lefties did to LBJ.
"Sanctuary cities" (and counties) pick up on Jefferson's "nullification" doctrine, which Madison softened to "interposition." Eventually this ended with secession and the Civil War, which was thought to have put an end to this nonsense, but here it is again.
At that, Jefferson and Madison were speaking of state laws, still thinking of states as sovereign entities; both would surely have choked on such presumption from mere municipalities created by state charters.
