"The scientists studied gender differences in three features of narcissism: leadership and authority, exhibitionism and entitlement. They looked at how people responded to statements like, “If I ruled the world, it would be a much better place.” Researchers found a large gap between the genders in the categories of leadership and entitlement, suggesting that men are more likely than women to believe they deserve privileges and pursue opportunities. But men and women were equally as exhibitionist."
“Compared with women, men exhibit more assertiveness and desire for power,” lead author Emily Grijalva said on the University of Buffalo website. “But there was no difference in the exhibitionism aspect, meaning both genders are equally likely to display vanity or self-absorption.”
“Individuals tend to observe and learn gender roles from a young age, and may face backlash for deviating from society’s expectations,” Grijalva says. “In particular, women often receive harsh criticism for being aggressive or authoritative, which creates pressure for women, more so than for men, to suppress displays of narcissistic behavior.” (read the whole thing)

Americans must like narcissists enough that they would put one in the White House.
"“If I ruled the world, it would be a much better place.”"
Well, you have to admit, it's pretty obvious that I do have a point there.
Exactly. I'd be pretty content if Bagoh ruled the world.
Of course. You realize that my experience as part of the oppressive patriarchy has given me vast experience. Oh, and I'd have a special position for you little lady. One of great influence and opportunity for graft.
It's not narcissism if it's true.
Oh, this is bunk. Women respond to surveys dishonestly. Narcissistically. IMHO, of course.
"Compared with women, men exhibit more assertiveness and desire for power."
This researcher obviously didn't have a Jewish mother.
I think men are generally more straightforward on surveys. I do believe more women worry about how they are perceived or how they imagine themselves and answer questions accordingly.
Trying to put it in a nicer way because I'm worried now about how I'll be perceived.
=)
Oh baloney. Women are narcissists as well as men. We are just more subtle (sneaky) about it.
:-)
@DBQ: Phew! :)
I never answer any surveys. They interfere with my egotistic admiration of my own attributes.
I'd like to see a study proving that studies like this are of any practical consequence whatsoever.
The authors' acceptance of the binary construct of human sexuality is one more example of the destructive influence of the hetero-normative patriarchy's dominance of the social sciences.
We must open our minds to the true nature of the species (n.b., Eric the Fruit Bat, Titus, Meade) and reject the outmoded thinking of the past which has been forced upon us by those who use this false concept to perpetuate their control.
Except, of course, as it concerns my relationship with Kate Upton.
Which must explain why men constantly go onto the cover of every magazine and available billboard begging you to look them over.
Darcy and DBQ - yay!
So if Bagoh rulez the world and I was the graft czar - I'd want to be the anti-graft czar. Under my rule, the first person to be make an example of would be Harry Reid.
I know we can't just put his head on a pike, but we can tar and feather him and parade him around the town square - as an example for others.
The Clintons and Nancy Pelosi are next.
Make = made.
Narcissism
From Wiki
"Not to be confused with Egocentrism"
Narcissism is the pursuit of gratification from vanity or egotistic admiration of one's own attributes. The term originated from the Greek mythology, where the young Narcissus fell in love with his own image reflected in a pool of water.
Narcissism is a concept in psychoanalytic theory, introduced in Sigmund Freud's On Narcissism. The American Psychiatric Association has the classification narcissistic personality disorder in its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM).
Narcissism is also considered a social or cultural problem. It is a factor in trait theory used in some self-report inventories of personality such as the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory. It is one of the three dark triadic personality traits (the others being psychopathy and Machiavellianism).
Except in the sense of primary narcissism or healthy self-love, narcissism is usually considered a problem in a person or group's relationships with self and others. Narcissism is not the same as egocentrism.
I think the study confuses narcissism with egocentrism.
