as an animal lover, and a so-called conservative, (Can we have a new name, please?) I don't understand why it's considered offensive to treat our fellow animals with a little dignity. Even before we kill them.
It places me on the same side as peta and green peace, from time to time, around the margins - but I really don't care.
I am always on the side of green peas. As long as it's a side, not the main dish. Give me meat.
When I was just out of HS I drove a delivery truck with occasional stops at the local Hormel plant. What I saw, the panic in the holding pens, the casual cruelty to the pigs being slaughtered, was sickening. Did I quit eating meat? No, I just stopped thinking about it.
If one buys kosher meat, is he assured that the killing and preparation are done with respect and using a proper manner? What is the proper manner of slaughtering?
(In 1660, the English Restoration court tried and convicted the Charles 1 regicides, and sentenced them to be to death by the rope, with additional pleasantries, from which the term “drawn and quartered”, became popular. This describes the final moments of one rather plucky regicide.)
From Killers of the King, by Charles Spencer:
When the moment came for him to be put to death, Harrison recalled achievements from the past, while entrusting his future to God: “I have served a good Lord and Creator; he has covered my head many times in the day of battle. By God I have leapt over a wall, by God I have run through a troop, and by God I will go through this death and He will make it easy for me. No into thy hands, O Lord Jesus, I commit my spirit.”
He was hanged with the short drop, to ensure no easy departure from this world, and only when the frantic thrashing had stopped was he cut down. As Harrison regained consciousness his shirt was pulled away. The executioner used his knife to cut off Harrison’s genitals, which were presented to him before being tossed into a basket. He was then held down while red-hot metal was bored into his belly.
It was while his innards were being burnt in front of him that Harrison summoned up his remaining strength, and swung a punch that caught the executioner off-guard. This brought an abrupt end to the major general, as he was immediately dispatched by the irate and embarrassed hangman. Harrison’s head was severed, his heart cut out, and then his body was cut up into four.
I don't think we ever treated our farm animals like this. Great book tho, I'm half way through.
I just now saw a whole bunch of Temple Grandin autism videos. Mis mas favorito; Temple Grandin On Mark Zuckerberg and Overcoming Autism.
I did not know the animal pens without corners design work was done by a woman. And I did not know she is with Colorado State University. Nor that she is autistic.
I read she designed the pens by pretending to be a cow being herded through one, actually going through a pen and experience being moved and feeling, you know, I wouldn't mind it so much if I were unaware of the fencing and harsh metal corners. They're scary! Get rid of those and I'd be a lot more relaxed about being herded along.

And what about kosher salt?

Oh yes, thanks, AA.
Yikes - what a story. What a horrible way to go.
The cool thing about Temple Grandin is that she is on the Autism spectrum.
Her bio
