"Yearning for freedom brought down Berlin Wall, says Merkel"

"During the course of 1989 more and more East Germans lost their fears of the state's repression and chicanery, and went out on the streets. There was no turning back then. It is thanks to their courage the Wall was opened." In a country with few cheerful anniversaries to celebrate after its belligerent 20th century history, Germans have latched onto memories of the peaceful East German revolution that brought down the Berlin Wall on a joyful Nov. 9, 1989.

"It was a miracle that everything happened peacefully," said Merkel, who was on her way home from a visit to the sauna when she saw crowds of people heading west and joined them. "There had been a lot of excitement for weeks. There were tanks that had been on my street since October 7."

I have a piece of the Berlin wall in one of the drawers in this old desk that's upstairs in an unused bedroom. It has paint on it and what might be magic marker, possibly from some sort of graffito.

I don't believe in religious relics, but someone gave it to me as a gift and it seems wasteful and disrespectful to just throw it away.

I'm pretty much stuck with it.

And so we have stasis

The Stasis may want that back one day, Bat.

I thought Stasis was the name of that nasty cunt on Vanderpump Rules?

"Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!"

According to Reuters Reagan doesn't deserve even a mention. Why am I not surprised.

Or the tens of thousands of American GIs stationed there preserving the peace, ricpic.

Angie is absolutely right; some of the stories about people trying to get over - or die in the attempt - were magnificent.

Definitely something to celebrate.

Reagan was such a successful president, he has been erased by the leftwing machine.

The Germans need to have done something to be proud of during the 20th century, I guess, so I won't begrudge them (well, not too much) boasting of their courage re the Berlin Wall. But it would have been a touch of class if Merkel had somewhere said, and, hey, thanks America for having our back and holding the line for a very long time.

German unity was only possible, because our friends and neighbors had faith in us. And it was only possible thanks to the unwavering support of our American friends. Without American support, German unification would not have happened!

Peter Wittig, German Ambassador to the US.

Merkel should have said something. However, given the German media, would they have translated/reported it?

If you think we have a biased media, check out the Kraut's media sometime.

Thanks for finding the ambassador's comment, chickelit. Makes me feel much warmer toward Germany. And, who knows, maybe Merkel did say something like that, too, but it didn't make it past the MSM wall.

I own(ed) a piece of the wall. I want to throw it at Obama to remind him where he is leading the country.

What a stupid idea that wall was in the first place. Communism was always an incredibly stupid idea and more stupid ideas are pretty much it's only product besides corpses.
