I'm confused. Petula Clark had a hit with "England Swings" (Like a Pendulum Do,) but Marianne Faithful did Jagger and "Broken English."
Broken English is one of my favorite albums. It certainly fit a Jagger groupie better than the sweet songs she sang earlier. Great album to play when one wants to indulge in a man-hating binge.
Christy, I'm actually only familiar with the Roger Miller version of "England Swings." I meant the hint only as a reference to swinging London in the mid-1960's and not as a misdirection to Petula Clark.
On her mother's side, Marianne Faithful is a Hapsburg with a claim to some European title. It's hard to be a working class hero when you're a Hapsburg, but she pulled it off. A lot of the grittiness in her life was self inflicted. Some people are born into hardship and others achieve it......Female singers have a second act after they get fat and lose their looks. Her voice is bitter and harsh. Drug addiction doesn't sound like anything but a bad experience when she sings about it. I give her credit for that and for surviving this long.
